2003 Iron Horse Vineyards Brut LD

Green Valley Champagne Blend more

- Light gold color with small pearls. It's somewhat balanced and has flavours of apple and leesy with a light body. Bright texture with a medium finish - Pale yellow color. Many, many small, active bubbles that fizz when they break the surface. Apples on the nose, subtle. Green apples and - something else light - on the palate. A little sour, not unpleasant; yeasty. Acidity on the edges of the tongue mid-mouth with a little bump at the end of the palate. Not outstanding, but pleasant for sipping, maybe with cheeses, fruit, light fish. Good with the Mitica Carprichio with Green Pepper goat cheese we had. Wouldn't stand up to strong flavors.

Consistent with previous notes, Joy's wines never disappoint. Wonderful pairing with grill seared tuna, duck liver pâté, whiskey cheddar, & manchego cheese.

Brownish yellow with tiny bubbles and lite in the glass. Nose of mustard seed, yeast, citrus and sandwich. Lite body, bone-dry and nutty. Mustard seed and sandwich aromatics carry onto the palate. Thin oiliness. Super sturdy. Medium finish.

Slightly oxidized but in great shape. Yeasty, bready, apple, and more. Medium gold in colour. Bubbles were doing well. Didn't have it open long enough to see how the air treated it.

Wow, 15 year old Brut Rose. Great way to start the wedding weekend! Yeasty, with apples and red fruits. Barest hints of oxidation. Great balance, amazing depth and complexity. What a lovely wine.

Salmony color. Seems like more pinot in this one than in the past vintages. Smooth and tight with light berries complimenting a delightfully zesty mid range. Not as dry as previous vintages with a little more ability to stand on its own without food. Compliments food as well though as it stood up to a slightly spicy stew. Great bubbly!

Earth and mushroom with bits of cherry and spice. Excellent Russian river Pinot without the candied notes that often happen with these wines. Love Iron Horse as usual.

Fading quickly. A lot of the bite is gone. Apple flavor no longer crisp and getting a little soft. Yeast components are still present but turning slightly bitter in its old age. Still a decent bubbly but a little like a great boxer past its prime it is getting a little soft around the middle. Drink now.

Great depth, mouth feel, and richness, mushroom and yeasty bread notes. Just loved this, so I went back and bought half a case. Okay QPR at $38. Amazing value at $20.

ddeuddeg and I decided to open a 2010 Iron Horse Rainbow Cuvée from our cellar the other night, since we knew it was coming up as a “Back by Popular Demand” item. It is a 13.5% Blanc de Blancs Sparkling made from 100% estate grown Chardonnay grapes plus a dosage. It was light straw in color with many tiny bubbles. It had a refreshing feel on the nose. I’m afraid that I am not good at identifying the nose on a sparkling wine. I do know that it was really pleasant and that I liked it. I would characterize this sparkling as light and crisp and extremely enjoyable. It paired perfectly with our sea bass, snow peas and jasmine rice. The hints of apple and citrus on the palate are just a lovely combination. ddeuddeg already made his purchase. I will have to make mine—this from wine club members.

As a wine club member, I happened to have a couple of bottles of the 2010 Rainbow Cuvée on hand, so we pulled a cork last night, with the wine well chilled, and poured a couple of glasses. In the glass, a lovely light straw color, no pink showing from the tiny amount of PN in the dosage. First impression of the nose: a light citrusy aroma, lemon and lime, really pleasant. On the palate, more of the same, plus some flinty minerality, with a nice acidity to balance it off. As the wine warmed up a bit during the meal, I started to taste some of the pear flavors I was expecting, together with a light yeastiness. Later still, nearing room temperature, I got the distinct aroma and taste of green apples, along with everything else. A delicious, complex bubbly, perfect with our meal. Chilean Sea Bass with a lime juice, shallot, cilantro, and ginger sauce, accompanied by jasmine rice and steamed snow peas finished with lemon-infused EVOO.
When the Iron Horse sales department called last month, I didn't mind ordering a couple at $58/bottle, plus shipping. At this price, even harder to resist.

More yeast than I remember. Tart nose and tongue with a diminishing effervescence. Beautiful warm apples and zesty citrus. Paired it with some salmon and potatoes and it was a lovely evening. A shame they don't do the straight Blanc de Blanc anymore (yes, I know the Ocean Reserve is normally a BdB but there is something off on that dosage). This was one of my favorites from them.

Slightly past its prime and not the greatest of vintages from these guys. Light lemon and yeast to the nose. Bright green apples up front with a slightly burnt caramel touch. Not bad but this brut is usually a lot more interesting. Stood up well to meatloaf.

Medium-dark pink color. Nose of red cherry and ripe strawberry with some hints of earthy funk. Similar flavors on the palate with a nice, tart red fruit profile and slight hints of yeasty dough. Good acidity and mouthfeel with a clean, refreshing finish. Very versatile from a food pairing perspective. I like this wine but QPR is questionable.

90+ Full, elegant Cali. sparkler. Dark golden yellow in the glass with a nose of baking spice, pear, and apple. The palate is round and mouth filling. It is perhaps lacking a bit of acidity to lift it to the next level but nonetheless excellent. Well worth the price and will last for several more years to come.
