2015 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées

Graceful wine with sweet red fruit - almost raspberry sherbet. Some grip underneath and hints of orange and current. Delicious now but will need to wait another ten years for the secondary flavors to emerge. Price seems to be escalating rapidly on this one

@ Oiji Mi NYC. Infanticide for sure but have a case and had to try it out. Big, herbaceous nose with linoleum coming through, mellowing out to tart cherry over time. Deep, almost opaque crimson. What gets me is the contrast of weight (some 1er and young Musigny in here) and weightlessness - dense and material on the palate, ephemeral on the finish like Ravel’s Scarbo. No sign of the hot vintage - the low-intervention style shines through beautifully in Mugnier 2020s. This will definitely deliver upside with some patience.

Bright, vibrant ruby purple
Darker fruited, young.
Seems a bit clumsy at the moment, but quite tasty.

Gosh this was good - poured blind I thought of Mugnier Amoureuses 02, pleased to find out I was quite close. What an 01 though! Visually fairly developed, a very welcoming nose with plenty of baking spice, entering very soft on the palate, superb inner sweetness on the soft and relaxed but long mid palate with plenty of minerality. No rusticity here just polished, round, lands on the palate like cashmere. The four of us went thourgh this bottle in about 10 minutes which speak to the crazy buvabilite. All you want in Burgundy and in such a good place. now-2040

Worth opening one right now, very expressive, full on red fruit and heady florals and while soft and ethereal silk on the tongue, the finish is intense, memorable and long lasting. Incredibly delicious right now and has the energy to cellar as long as any of us wine drinker can hope to live.

Riper than expected, with darker, tart cherries and some dried raspberries. Offered a bit more savory and spiced notes with air, but this felt out of balance to me, showing off more alcohol than expected. I think this needs several years.

Opened in Courchevel. Slow-oxed for a while and then enjoyed over a long, quiet evening.

This was very good. I was worried about infanticide - and it probably was a little bit, to be fair - but with air and patience it just blossomed. I was also worried about the vintage, as I tend to be cautious about 2020 reds, but I am happy to report that Mugnier has effortlessly handled the heat, and this was drinking beautifully.

Red fruits, Chambolle elegance and a soaring palate that masks the stuffing to help this wine age. Tannins already very well integrated. Slight tension which holds everything together - this will need a bit of time to unfurl. As such, potential upside if you wait another 3-5+ years, but drinking so well already. JFM always delivers!

La Paulée de Los Angeles Gala Dinner (The Fairmont - Santa Monica CA): Small glass. Rich and subtle at the same time, with so many layers coming through over the several sips I was able to enjoy from my healthy pour. Still wonderfully young and robust. As good as I can ever recall for this wine.

⭐️⭐️⭐️+
VDS 2-102-5. Jacques Fredric Mugnier, NSG 1er, Clos de la Marechale 2018

Opened at Le 1947 à Cheval Blanc. Slow-oxed for a while before being enjoyed for dinner.

Upon first pour, we were on the fence between leaving it in the bottle to breathe, or whether to play around with decanting. We went for the first option in the end, hoping that it would open up over the course of the meal.

Unfortunately, this really took a while to get going, and though there is a lot of power in this wine, the gorgeous Chambolle red-fruited floral elegant expressiveness that we know and love from Mugnier was just a bit muted. Definitely a product of the vintage, and just needs more time and air.

Would seek to revisit this in around 3-5 years and see where it's at, but I imagine that patience will be rewarded and that there's some significant potential upside here. Still, a good red Burgundy from one of my favourite producers and always a pleasure to drink with G & M!

A bit of mintiness on the palate, led us to think this was some sort of village-level Ramonet (though the oak felt wrong to me); it falls off dramatically on the midpalate to the finish and there's a bit of dilution that really detracts.

Always enjoyed Mugnier wine. Clos de la Marechale is probably the cheapest but yet the closest to the bigger appellation to try his style. Pronounced nose intensity with notes of mushroom, earth, toast, red fruits, flora. Medium+ acidity and medium tannin. 2006 is consider a weaker vintage but drinking very well now.
