After about an hour in the glass, this wine just sings. typical mid-garnet colour. There's pure pinot fruits here. Wonderful nose. Palate is mix of spice, blue and red fruits, earthy richness. It's quite dense for this level too. It's pure. Really enjoyable.

Slow oxed for 1 hour. Really attractive floral pinot aromatics lead to a wine with poise, harmony and balance. Flawless. There's intensity with minimal weight, fine tannins leading to a long finish. Delicious. Time will no doubt offer more complexity. I'd love to revisit in 5-10 years.

Flat and lifeless out of the bottle, and didn't improve with air. One-dimensional and disappointing.

I was a bit surprised by the freshness and elegance of this wine. Whites from cote des nuits rarely fit these descriptions. However, this wine is bright straw colour with green tones. Typical aromas of tropical fruit, some oil and a bit of green grass. Medium bodied, surprisingly fresh, nice citrusy mouth and aftertaste with hints of chalk and grass. Long. This is just too young, believe it or not. Next bottle will be opened n a year or two.

Brief note. This was wonderful but has plenty of time ahead. great balance, solid density and if there is a rough edge to be found it is the acidity, which is compleely subdued by the dense fruit. glad i found some more!

Dark black cherry, touch of earth, leather, and tobacco which blows off with some air and becomes more fruit forward. LOVE it.

Can imagine this wine holding its own in a lineup of modest grand crus. Blueish and reserved, with attractive floral notes that eventually open. Robust palate with nitpick being slightly abrupt finish.

A beauty which gained considerable weight(in a good way!) since my last bottle. The color is slightly smokey with a beautiful hue and bricking at the rim. On the nose the aromas of red roses, red berried, wet earth, black/grey peppers, and other aromas dance together with joy. On the palate it brings even more complexities as there is that texture which has gained weight and yet remain super vivid and uplifting. Strange, yes, it has gained in texture and yet keeps lifting you effortlessly. Yum... a true joy and blessing to taste this with a salt/pepper only Prime Rib. Life is Beautiful, no question. Cheers,

Fading a little - light red. Fragrant red fruit nose - raspberries and red currants. More Brett, forest floor flavours on the palate with some sweet fruit remaining. Less disjointed that I remember. Long sweet finish. Pleasurable.

Ruby. Much more soil on the nose than the 2014. Not appreciably heavier or more concentrated than that wine, but much more soil laden. Surprisingly, more cranberry tartness and less delineation of fruit as well rather than finding the riper fruit I had expected. This seems a little mixed up right now whereas the prior vintage has had a good bit of time to settle and integrate. Judgement deferred.

Crisp, even ruby. Lovely red and blue fruit aromas. Marvelous weight and feel with great balance of fresh fruit and soil which you both feel and taste. Excellent acidity and length. I much preferred this to its 2015 counterpart tasted right after this. Very elegant Nuits that is already showing very well-no Gouges this!

2004 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Musigny

Musigny Grand Cru Pinot Noir more

2004 Burgundy Grand Cru Dinner (Holland Park): Not up there with Mugnier's very best examples from Musigny, but this was nevertheless an absolutely lovely wine, and drinking wonderfully at the moment as well. The nose did feel slightly green and herby, more so than many of the other 2004s on show, but this was wrapped up in a full, generous bouquet of blueberries ringed with a beautiful perfume of lovely florals and whiffs of smokiness. It was such a powerful bouquet that I though the greener inflections added interest, rather than distracted from the whole. It was beautiful on the palate too - very Musigny in character I thought, absolutely complete and full, and wonderfully inetgrated, so that it felt like many complex notes - blueberries and spice and meat and earth - all wrapped up and melded into one solid beam of flavour that filled the mouth right from the attack and all the way into a super-long finish. In true Mugnier fashion though, this was always a wine of purity and grace in spite of its great depth and generosity, with a wonderful clarity glowing through its fruit expression. Tannins were soft and silky, but the wine was carried nicely by the fine acidity of the vinatge. Like the nose, there was a just a touch of something green here - capsicum I thought - but it was more or a subtle highlight around the egdes of the palate that reminded you of that this was from 2004, rather than a real distraction. All in all, a beautiful wine, drinking wonderfully now.

A quiet mineral spice that is very Chambolle in character. Opening up into bright red cherry fruit. Young and vibrant, but certainly approachable and pleasurable. Less expressive and showy than it is delicate and elegant, in what I find to be classic Mugnier style. Glad this bottle was enjoyed before the main event as, although it was excellent, sometimes Mugnier's subtle beauty gets overwhelmed in a broader context.

Love the Mugnier style...elegance over weight. Started a little muted...almost diluted. After a vigorous decant wine's fruit was coaxed out and added to brilliance. Drinking way above village level. Will wait on my other two bottles...a little.

2003 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Musigny

Musigny Grand Cru Pinot Noir more

2003 Burgundy Grand Cru Dinner (Iggy's, Hilton Hotel, Singapore): Wow - this was superb. I think Mugnier's gentler, more feminine stylings really worked well with the heat of the vintage, resulting in a wine that was somehow still elegantly wrought in spite of its riper tones. It had a lovely nose, rather deeper and richer than normal, showing blueberries and spice carried along more savoury undertones of earthy undergrowth and mineral notes. With time, a fresher waft of fresh cut flowers started coming out as well. A very nice nose. The palate had lovely clean feel to it, something that the other 2003 wines on show did not always share, with a nice purity and an almost filigreed elegance to its juicy bluberry and dark cherry flavours. There was a lovely depth and fullness to it, with only a certain hint of stewed ripeness that showed-off the hotter vintage. Otherwise, this had all of the pure, transparent, and brilliantly integrated character that I love about Mugnier's Musignies, with the wine coming across on one perfect whole from attack all the way into a long finish that wound its way through the back-palate with a trail of minerality. The most un-2003 of the 2003 wines, and a surprisingly early drinking Musigny to boot - this was a great wine that was drinking very well on the night.

1996 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Musigny

Musigny Grand Cru Pinot Noir more

12/21/2016 - Paul S wrote: 95 points

1996 Burgundy Grand Cru Dinner (Forlino's, One Fullerton, Singapore): On a night of great wines, this was one of my favourites. It had an absolutely wonderful nose that floated out of the glass in perfumed wafts violets and high-toned berry fruit, dried minerally earth, and then fragrant spices: a mix of cardamom and clove with all sorts of other exotic shades. Beautiful. On the palate, this was by far the finest wine on the night in of texture and elegance, with a wonderful silkiness to its flavours of dark cherries and blueberries infused with gentle tones of earth and spice. Past the midpalate, the wine was carried along on deeply floral undercurrant, with the finest of tannins and fresh acidity pulling away into an effortlessly long finish. This was a Musigny of wonderful finesse, but while all was fine and transparent and pure, there was also true sense of iron grip underlying all the silk. A truly lovely wine, but I think it will be even better in 5 years' time.

This is a classic example of a good producer making great wine in a so-so vintage. The nose is beautiful with loads of cranberry and red raspberry; lovely Nuits gamy/iron/blood notes, violet, and just a touch of spice. The palate is simply delicious with great red fruit, beautiful balance and good depth for the vintage and level. This is the type of wine that is pure enjoyment and a great way to taste one of Burgundy's masters for a reasonable price. Wish I had more...
