12/27/2023 - RichEB1 Likes this wine: 95 points1996 Jade Mountain Mouvedre, Evangelho Vineyard, California. I was able to snag this for a song from a local cellar where the wine has been sitting, untouched, since release. I was excited to try it based on the Vineyard and the vintage but was also ready to be disappointed. The color looked excellent through the bottle and the fill was perfect, so when I saw the condition of the cork and realized that I didn't even need my Durand....my hopes were a bit higher. Well I'm happy to report that this wine was really, REALLY good! Like....I'm blown away good! It poured a beautiful purple color with a very young nose of violets and Mouvedre funk (in a great way). In the mouth this is absolutely delicious! Dark, sweet fruits, spice, and again a slight hint of Mouvedre funk. Loads of acidity create a wonderful and fresh mouth-feel. Honestly, blind, I'd clock this as 5 years old, tops. Not sure if there's some zin/other grapes in the wine but it's fantastic, and I'm hoping to grab some more. @bedrockmorgan @underthewirewine , you'd dig this the most! |

1/14/2018 - Mossrose wrote: 89 pointsDark ruby color with a lighter edge. Bright fruits of cherry and blackberry, rounded tannin, very smooth, and easy drinking. Overall, a very good under $12 Cabernet Sauvignon that draws from diverse vineyards across appellations which change from year to year, so that is labeled only as California. Although called "Jade Mountain", the blend is very unlikely to come from high altitude vineyards, because grapes from there would be too expensive to be profitably sold for so little money. |

On the palate, fairly substantial, oaky and tannic, but still with good fruit. Impressive wine. Great quaffer. 5-11-14-7: 87/100. |

6/27/2022 - brittain wrote: 90 pointsEven deep ruby, 3-4mm brown rim. Reticent nose of damson and leather. Hint of spice. Similar on palate with dry tannin to finish. Tannins lasting more than the fruit, but acidity still there. Likely past plateau (but haven’t had enough bottles to tell!). Won’t die quickly, but won’t improve. Drink up |

9/18/2020 - Saberist Likes this wine: 92 pointsPulled this from the cellar, thought it was probably past its prime and would be a pour out according to drinkability scores. Boy was I wrong! This was a delicious 1998 Rhône blend. Dark red. Flowery with opulent black cherry with a hint of sour cherrry at the end. Very smooth mouthfullling fruit with peppery flinty medium length finish. Decant as it throws fine sedement drank 1 hr after decanting. What a great surprise. Drinking well in 2020 Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

10/8/2019 - EMark Likes this wine: NRI picked this up (along with four other bottles of the same) at an estate sale for $5/bottle. Storage was sketchy, but what the heck. Well, I really scored. I pretty darned good wine. Very nice ruby color--no bricking. Very shy nose. Red fruit on the tip of the tongue--tending towards candied, but not bad. Some mid-palate mineral flavors. Acid and tannin are, pretty much, resolved. Some "roughness" on the rear palate that lingers through a lengthy finish, but that makes me think I'm drinking a real wine. |

3/2/2018 - z_willus_d wrote: 88 pointsIt's been nearly 7 years since my first tasting of this wine, and reading my original note, I'm surprised by how accurate it is for this second tasting today. While the cork fell to pieces on me, this wine hasn't. It drinks like something someone would pay $200 for in a restaurant. The influence of that Napa oak pervades on the rich, vanilla and berry pie mid-palate, but again, the saving grace comes in the lengthy, smoky, beef jerk finish. It's amazing how unaffected the wine color is for its age - deep and crimson. This was made with an over-extracted, slightly unbalanced (w/ the alc) style, but I suppose the quality of the fruit and those initial tannin have kept it from falling apart. It's probably a better wine than it was 7 years ago, but I'm less tolerant of its flaws. |
