Tasted side by side the regular, the Goldkapsel is just a touch sweeter, still very clean and inviting.

A very good but not outstanding version of this wine. That out of the way, I did enjoy the Kabinetts playful balance of lime juices and saline tinted acidity. Typical Prum poise and restraint. Good underlying tension. Should hold for a decade or so if one is so inclined.

2001: A Wine Odyssey — Berserker Offline @ The Palace (The Palace Steakhouse, SF): Summary:
From the famously steep “Sundial” vineyard, this wine is a classic Mosel Riesling (soil is blue and devon slate).

This wine is so young, so primary, and so classic! I was surprised by the strength of the burnt match, but it seems (according to the interwebs) this is perfectly normal for young Prum Riesling - especially from the Sonnenuhr vineyard. Moderately sweet, light, and saffron-scented, with good varietal character and sparkling acidity.

Score: Between 8.5 and 9.

Visual:
Clear, day bright, medium-straw with moderate concentration. I’m a bit surprised this was lighter in color than the Cuvee Freddy - especially since this has botrytis on it, and that usually hastens oxidation and thus deepening of color.

Nose:
Light burnt match (reduction), which yields to a light (but present) tone of petrol/pool-toy (TDN). There is a slight hint of grapefruit pith (thiol character), and a moderate influence of botrytis (warm saffron and rice tones). Fruit wasn’t dominant for me.

Surprisingly youthful and moderately complex, with both varietal character and botrytis influence. The burnt match certainly evokes a sense of warm crushed stones (Terroir!). The fact that it seems to be a reductive character doesn’t change the magic of this combination. I’m becoming more and more convinced of the argument that minerality is in fact the combination of high acidy and moderated reduction.

I think this probably needs a lot of time — decades, perhaps — for the struck match aromas to subside and for secondary and tertiary aromas to develop.

Palate:
Off-dry (I wrote ~15g/L, but given the ripping high acid it could be in the 30’s or 40’s).
Low alcohol (not even diminished - I feel almost no alcoholic heat). ~10%? [actually 7.5%].
Solidly high acid, both malic and tartaric, though initially the acidic spark is softened by significant sweetness.
No phenolic bitterness.
Superb balance with sweetness lifted by strong acid.
Complexity is just moderate at this point - I think it needs significant age to develop further.
The finish is long, with sweetness and acidity neck-and-neck.

9th of 12, previous notes fine or better - pale gold; complex, floral, some honey and mineral, richer than previously; light, but intense, long and with persistence and complexity lacking up to 2 years ago, has gone into a new gear since last year's bottle, but JJP's auslesen always seem to need 15 years before any complexity starts to develop and this was very lean and mean originally. Very fine (18.5/20).

Monthly Tasting Group: Rieslings and Thai Food (Sen Yai Sen Lek, Mpls): Light-medium gold color. 3oz pour. Oh my, this was so good from the get go, bright on the nose with nectarine, pineapple, subtle fusil; on the palate this is full bodied, unctuous but not overtly sweet, textured and balanced, good acid, nectarine, tangerine, mineral, orange zest on an long finish.

Stunning wine. Beautiful nose of smoky slate, yellow fruit and saline. Palate is full and rich with zippy acidity which caries ripe peach, lemon candy, mango skin, stones, slate, smoke, and pepper. Gorgeously balanced Spatlese with big acidity to balance out the weight and RS. The texture is beautiful with the wine feeling velvety smooth and almost rolling down the side of the palate while the middle sees a powerful acidic backbone that's isn't bracing, but promises great life ahead.

Day 1: This was "the" disappointment of my wine tasting of German rieslings.

Austere, unbalanced and unchacteristic, it showed no trace of why his winemaker is so famed after all.

This despite several hours of decantation and different temperatures of tasting.

Day 3. After three days in the fridge, this became a sophisticated and ejoyable wine. Now this is a nicely crafted, fragile wine with a charming minerality. Probably this means that one should leave it in the cellar for at least 2 more years I guess.

At Noosa with Pearl Perch and Chips on the waterfront ! Brilliant green-gold. Nose of lime, grapefruit, touches of apricot, slate and spearmint. Palate intense with great grip and length : medium sweetness lifted and balanced by fine acid/fruit balance. A beautiful wine for all occasions - this one a special picnic !

A leaking bottle that I opened way too early - seepage aside, this still feels incredibly young with a tinge of sulfur lingering despite a short decant, and very fresh, youthful citrus, apple, and peachy fruit framed by floral and slate notes. Classic Prüm - moderate sweetness here, less than many modern Spätlese, and fantastic balance with remarkable lightness on the palate and no shortage of acidity. One of those Auslese that's perfect to drink with food, though I really need to be more patient with my remaining bottles, seepage or not.

Incredibly light color. Still primary aromas of apple and green citrus. Light, off dry, loads of slate, vanilla custard, pure fruit that is youthful and fresh. A delight now but no doubt better in 5+ years. Prototypical Mosel Spatlese.

Hmm. This one is a puzzle. Maybe the brashly sunny, fruity wines of the Sonnenuhr are more of my style, but I've had more than a few wines from the Himmelreich that just seem steely, gray, and cold to me. Impeccably made, this wine seems like a structured mathematical thesis. Impressive beyond my grasp, but cold and impersonal. I try this every year, and occasionally it grows on me (2005 was a great Graach year for Prum) but I seem to keep drawing the same conclusion.

What an astounding dessert wine! Upon initial opening this seemed hesitant and tucked away in it's shell. Honeyed fruit was all it was willing to show. But we decided to drink this over the course of two weeks and map its trajectory. By week two this had unfurled magnificently, showing some of the most dense, dark flavors I've every imagined. You can feel every part of your tongue light up as you taste the wine. Perhaps the most curious aspect was that it wasn't acidity that kept it from being too heavy, but a distinct salty undercurrent that was most unexpected and wonderful. Definitely a wine limited in it's pairings, but it's hard to imagine a greater dessert wine.

Rockstars of Burgundy: Guava, mint, mandarin, pear and mineral with some unripe plum as well. The acidity is superb, it really carries the lean fruit along with the tangy acidity - definitely in the Graacher Himmelreich mineral style. Not yet complex but it will get there with time.

#17-08, 7.5% abv. From half-bottle. (Pop and pour.) Very pale colour, with just a hint of green still. The Pruem nose (be it sulphur, sponti, or whatever else) is strong on this one. I can't quite get past it to detect anything else on the nose at the moment. I plan to leave this guy out for a few days for the aromas to reveal themselves. I have, like, n more of these (where n is so large I cannot count that high), so I'm not gonna run out of them any time soon -- I figured breaking open one or two of these early on to get a sense of how they were doing would be a useful exercise. The palate is very sweet and rich, and shows a predominant floral and honey tone, as opposed to fruit-influenced flavours. There is a bit of pineapple gummi bear, but it isn't in the same way that you get from Willi Schaefer -- this one is sweeter and showing more candied notes than pineapple -- if that makes sense at all. I'll check back on this half-bottle periodically over the next week. (Day 2) No changes. (Day 3) A bit of white peach and pineapple has slowly started to emerge on the nose, but it's not very prevalent yet. The palate has held pretty stable. (Day 6) The sponti still hasn't even come close to blowing off. The palate is much more open and approachable now, with lots of white and yellow fruit, Very sweet, but I'd like just a touch more acidity. It's very trying how slow this is evolving! (Day 9 -- it's a Starcraft 2 reference, get it?) I'm getting more honey and lychee aromatics today, but this is still as coiled as before. Geez, will this wine please budge? (Day 13) The last bit today. I think this has finally come around. The aromas of sponti are still there, but finally muted. This is immensely honeyed and rich both on the nose and palate, and while the acidity is on the low side, there's still enough to keep this from becoming cloying. Given the richness now and the longevity of this half-bottle in my fridge, I'm optimistic about this wine's long-term prospects.
