2013 Josef Chromy Pinot Noir Pepik

A tight nose of red currant/cherry and an autumn leaf savoury element that is intertwined with green stalk. The palette is quite savoury and the acid balance is spot on with a soft and delicate complexity on the finish.

Lovely aromas of cherry and a delicate and enjoyable palate of cherry and strawberries finished with vanilla. Matched well with quail

Fresh peach notes with a slight citrus zingy nose, sharper citrus notes on palate accompanied by more peach and nectarine flavours. Still very young so creamy texture only slight at this stage, will improve greatly in 3-4 years

Lighter style of Pinot, not normally a favourite of mine. had a great bouquet, cherries on the front palate and some spices almost moving to an aniseed type of flavour. Nice length with a dry finish. Absolutely fantastic now, but looking forward to seeing this age over the next 4-5 years

Crisp citrus, delicate and balanced sweetness, with rounded mouth feel. This is what good white wine is made of. Packs big flavour. A stunning Sauv Blanc that beats the pants off that watery Malborough rubbish.

Crisp citrus and light bubbles, nothing better for brunch, whether on its own or in a mimosa.

Light yellow in colour, the nose manages to meld intense cotris fruits with more aromatic peach blossom characters.

The palate is dry, savoury and mineral with green apple dominating and the finish having a chalky character that accentuates the wines length.

A bit young and closed but did open up over time. Showed some savoury hints with good floral, red fruits and a silky feel. This will benefit from some age.

Light copper colour and very lively mousse. Bread dough, sweetly fruity. Palate is lightly fruity, slightly sweet and crisp. Ho-hum. points for the good bubbles

Nose is an interesting mix of lemon rind and petrol. The palate is also brilliant, with a petrol beginning that moves fairly quickly to lemon and lime before finishing back on mineral notes and tremendous acidity. Beautiful riesling!

Pinot-palooza (Carriageworks, Redfern): On the nose there are slightly green, stalky notes, red currant over strawberries and cream. On the palate the red currant and strawberry fruit is in tandem with plentiful tannic grip that has some stalky notes. Long. I can see what's being attempted here and this is one of the better examples I've seen. Though the wine is not strictly in balance the whole is harmonious. Very young.

Pinot-palooza (Carriageworks, Redfern): Aromas of tart red currants over berry, a creamy almost buttery quality. In the mouth the wine has juicy red fruit, very slight toasted caramel oak, front of mouth grip. The fruit gets more dilute with time but the whole is usurpingly refreshing.

The nose, red berries, mints, caramel, and fresh herbs; delicious, fruity, heavy, and juicy palate with lots of red and black berries; however, the finish was a bit too short; overall, 90-91 points.

Alcohol way too predominant. Had hints of pinot freshness but never stood out even as I cooled it down. Day 2, more of the same.

Green-tinted gold. Screwcap matchstick, then toasted oak, then cabbage and greengage, then sulphur again. Lean on the palate, slightly bitter apricot fruit, grapeskin acidity, toasted oak. Shortish finish. This would have worked with proper acidity but grapeskin alone cannot support such a lean style. The experience is one of anemic Chablis fruit with hot climate acidity: not terribly convincing.

Not sure if PG existed under the Pepik label prior to 2013? As per other varietals under this label not terribly impressive but serviceable enough. Sweet(ish) with some residual and a definite Alsace-feel. So more gris than grigio. Needs a chill to keep the palate from getting flabby. Overripe tropical fruits drive the way here.

So heavily reduced I found it hard to get a good read on this wine. It reeked of onion skin, grey slate and citrus. It was paired back in the mouth with strong citrus line and good focus.

As for August; remains luscious with lime and botrytis. I'm half tempted to let one of these go 15 years just to see how it fares. Not sure this 2007 has been surpassed since, either.
