This showed the grapey side of red burgundy, as I found neither the fruit or freshness up to par. Seemed pretty accessible and open, but still a disappointing bottle, as I can recall the Caillerets being plenty fresh and complex on release. From magnum, pop and pour, consumed over two hours.

good and solid red burgundy with typical Pommard density and fruit/roundness, liked by the "nine and dine" team at the golf club better than the '96 Raphet Combottes (which was preferred by me) and got better with a few hours of air as it added some secondary / spice elements over time, nice if slightly simple burgundy

Tropical and smokey and just amazing.

And the palate is rich and massive, settling into itself. Great.

Thought this bottle was showing better, 45 minute decant surely played a role. Gossamer-like and lacy right from the start with the mid-palate fleshing out towards the latter part of the bottle. Tannins are perfectly resolved and the wine is very balanced between its fruit and acidity. Explosive nose of violets and mushrooms. Delicious!!

This has really fleshed out in the two years since we opened a previous bottle. The wine has a core of powerful sour cherry fruit that lingers into the finish. A strong mineral streak, and some cooking herb flavors in the background. This will continue to improve but it is already quite enjoyable.

My comments are almost the same as those of CHAZBHAM of which this is my loose translation -

Precise and pure nose. Very hedonistic palate, fleshy and juicy, delivering notes of red fruit with cherry dominant, spice and wood. In short, it's delicious, but a little atypical for Volnay.

I would add that the cedary wood notes, though agreeable, are rather too prominent for my idea of Burgundy but I guess that they will attenuate with more time. Very good.

This is lovely, resolved mature red burgundy, a twist of acid to freshen it, those autumn leaves, that depth. Beautiful.

Nez précis et pur. Bouche très gourmande, charnue et juteuse, délivrant des notes de fruits rouges dominants de cerise, d'épices et de bois. En bref, c'est délicieux, mais un peu atypique pour Volnay.

Mid ruby. Quite light with a slightly orange zest feel to the red fruit. Smooth and silky with perhaps just a pinch of tannin that nods towards Pommard. Drinking well. ****

The wine is clear with a pale intensity, garnet color.

Developing nose with a medium(+) intensity. Lots of Pinosity with aromas of strawberry, cherry, cranberry, nutmeg, forest floor, oriental spice, dried rose, oak and cedar.

The wine is dry with a medium(+) acidity, medium body and tannins. Medium(+) intensity with flavors of dried strawberry, cranberry, cherry, nutmeg, oriental spice and oak. The finish is medium(+).

Classy, juicy Pinosity with really ripe fruit. Not overly complex or bombastic but just good. If I had any bottles myself I wouldn't open them for at least 5 years or so. This will turn out great!

I'm not really a Pinot fan but this is delicious. Translucent garnet; earthy mushrooms, red fruit on the nose. It has fantastic complex flavors, earthy with cranberries and raspberries. Great balance. Not much in the way of tannins. Light to medium bodied, great with soft shell crabs.

This 1st Cru was so disappointing. High in acid, low on fruit, terroir and earthy notes. WS gave it an 89. That's to high for this shallow, acidy Pinot. I'll stick to USA Pinots at half the price.

Medium intense aromas of red fruit, cranberries, sour cherries, rose hip,, strawberries, tobacco, chocolate, juniper wood and sandal wood.

Medium+ acidity, medium(-) body, medium tannins, medium+ intensity and a medium+ finish. Light bitterness.

Refreshing, slender and easy drinking. Lovely wine. Lacks a bit of complexity with no real signs of maturity yet. Will probably keep for another decade.

Post Musique & Vin Festival BYO Dinner with Musicians (1243 Bourgogne Society - Beaune): Small taste, brief note. Mostly mature ripe fruit with good concentration. Like the 1985 tasted earlier, this combines spice, earth and fruit (slightly less fruit in the 1978), but I found this deeper and more nuanced.

Caveau des Arches: Wines with Dinner (Beaune): This will need some cellar time, far more than most 2011s at its level. Red and black cherry aromas with good intensity. Similar flavors profile that starts with good spice, but today is followed by a slightly hollow/ shut middle that I hope will expand with time. Slightly bitter finish that I also hope dissipates. Perhaps just 88 points based solely on pleasure provided tonight, but I certainly see upside potential, so judgment deferred. I wouldn't revisit to 2020 or later.

HDH auction tasting at Tru (Chicago, IL): Bottle 01934. Lovely florals on the nose. Red fruited and aromatic on both the nose and palate. Perhaps a bit austere but that can't be too surprising given the vintage. Coarser tannins and very high acidity, but I think given air this will ease up quite a bit.

sulfites are dominant on the nose and palate day 1. Medium acidity and tannin. Slightly thin and hollow texture. Some nice spice. This hasn't met my expectations. Day two (hopefully improved) to come. Improved slightly day two. Sulfites disappear and some fruit emerges. Solid but not exciting.

Started disjointed but came together strong. Very plush dark pinot fruit. Opulent and expressive nose of flower, violet, dark cherry and orange peel. Sizable for appellation. I thought too large at first, however this developed a strong and unexpected transparency.
