My first experience with this wine. Compared with the other Volnays that night, it came across as much more candied and new world. I wonder if there was a storage issue or whether this was a representative showing.

Very elegant and seductive. Delicious, fine mouth and front palate, but short finish. Would drink these over next few years.

This is really pretty tonight and in a really good place. Well balanced with penetrating red fruit, earth, sous bois, perhaps some floral notes, firm minerality at its core and a long satisfying finish. While this has a softer mouthfeel, there's underlying sauvage characteristics that make this hard to call feminine. All in all, an excellent Volnay that's drinking beautifully with a couple of hours of double decanting.

(Decanted for two hours.) This wine has a beautifully deep ruby color with an almost magenta center. The nose is simply beautiful: red and black fruits, spring flowers, cassis, and savory/earthy aromas. In the mouth it is medium-bodied with concentrated cherry and plum, uncooked meat and dried thyme flavors carried along on nervy acidity. Also, there is a mouthwatering streak of minerals (crushed rock, flint, rock salt?) that is difficult to describe but impossible to miss. The complexity and length of these flavors is compelling. The tannins are still substantial but refined. A study in power and finesse, another decade is needed before it reaches its glorious, stupidly good potential. 95+ points.

This amazing wine starts with a fine medium ruby color. The nose is an expressive and elegant mixture of candied red fruit, wood smoke, violets and vanilla. Cherry, strawberry and traces of anise coat the palate and the intensity of these flavors is impressive. A vein of fresh acidity lifts everything from start to finish and fine-grained tannins provide a bit of backbone and grip. The finish is long, cool and airy and leaves a floral fragrance in the mouth. This is a very lovely wine with real vitality, elegance and class. Though not nearly ready, it should be stunningly beautiful in about eight years.

Late Night with Brian (Extra Space Boon Keng, Singapore): Every time I think the 2002 vintage is finally starting to come of age, along comes a bottle like this that turns back the clock with its stubborn tightness and that sense of something deeply brooding in the core of the wine, needing more time to coax out. I have had this wine twice before. The first bottle in 2009 was tight and stingy and lacking charm; the second, 5 years later in 2014, was lovely and giving. The bottle tonight unfortunately shared more with the former than the later. The nose certainly showed some development, with lots of earthy, almost funky smells at first. This blew off a bit with time to show a nice layer of sweet red cherries, touches of herb and then a bit of glycerol and some sweet toasty notes. However, the palate was quite a bit tighter. It had all the hallmarks of the 2002 vintage – nice depth and fullness, not super-fresh but very nicely balanced, with a fine by well-structured grip – it was just that this was still a bit obstinate, coming across a rather mono-dimensional in its gently sweet flavours of sour cherries and sweet berries and boiled hawthorne fruit, with only a little more complexity showing up towards a decent finish, where a warm flush of spice and earth and rather buried floral hints starting coming up. On paper, this ticked all the boxes, but it just lacked some of the layered nuance and charm of the bottle I had last year. There is certainly quality here, but it needs to be left alone in the cellar for a good 4-5 more years. 91+

Friday Night Double Blind Mondo $100+ (Bin 75): Darker crimson with large reddish orange rim, see through; really smoky, powdery limestone, sour and tart cherry, very taut but good fat to the fruit; seems almost like Cotes de Nuits but I'm south due to the cherry pit, meaty cherry; called 2010 Pousse Volnay; surprisingly delicious as this stage.

Greet Adira and small BYO at our place (Clinton Hill, Brooklyn): This started off nice out of the gate, and then went downhill some. Nose of raspberry, blackberry, juicy acid, strawberry, dark cherry, stone, good spice. Crisp on the palate with dark cherry, stone, minerals, dark spice - purple/red. Tary cherry and mineral finish. Delicious. With time, the fruit weakened and a serious oaky note began to dominate, which was a real turn off. I'm not sure how this bodes for the future of the wine. Nose - 5-5.5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1-1.5/2 = 16-17/20. Later: Nose - 4-4.5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 4.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 14.5-15/20.

nice, but interestingly i think this bottle was too young / shut down, drank over five nights and best on the fifth night, at first it was med plus density but tart / slightly shrill / high acid and slightly drying mouthfeel / finish, tannins weren't the issue btw, fruit was hiding and very dry, by the final night it had rounded out ever so slightly and you could confirm there is good red fruit there but still hiding / masked by the acidity... felt like a '96 wine which i had to wait and wait and wait for, should be worth the wait however (my guess) and could have 1-3 points upside if it comes out of the cave

Lovely wine. Red fruit nose and taste, very fresh and mineral. Many times Corton wines are a bit edgy, this is not, very clean and sharp. Still some tannins in the aftertaste, round and integrated. Long finish.

opened at last minute and cool from cellar. Some maturity, nose reticent at first then developed underbrush and crushed wild strawberries. Elegant palate, austere at first then softened with firm fruit and balanced finish. Good wine

Either needs more time or should be allowed to breath for 1 hour before enjoying. I still feel this wine will soften a bit over the next 2-3 years.

La Pousse d'Or Clos Des 60 Ouvrées Volnay 1er Cru 2004 is a spring garden of delicate mint and rose petals, seedy raspberries, alpine strawberries and incense. Garnet-hued with a watery rim, it's light, and feminine. The finish is a little bit short, embellished with black tea tannin and cherry pit. It comes across as slightly thin, that is, perhaps the major disappointment to a wine that paired agreeably with that most classic of French dishes, Coq au Vin. 13.0% ABV.

Tasting of 2013's at Domaine de la Pousse d'Or (Volnay): Medium ruby. Serious, smoky nose. Medium weight, very soil driven, backward. Sneaky texture, rising tannins. Penetrating acids, good length. Will need a long time, but the best of the 4 wines we tasted and excellent potential.
