2004 La Rioja Alta Rioja Gran Reserva 904

Tempranillo Blend, Tempranillo more

5/20/2015 - Life At Your Leisure wrote: 96 points

Dark ruby color turning crimson at the rim with an exotic nose that epitomizes Rioja Alta earth, tobacco, leather, dried meat, smoke and red brick. The palate is medium-bodied with bright acidity that gives it a crisp, silky texture. Flavors of red cherry, raspberry, potpourri, vanilla, scorched cedar and spice form the core. This wine is very elegant, and pairs well with oxtail stew. Finishes long and spicy with hints of vanilla. This is delicious. Just a notch lower than the 2001. Drink now until 2024.

We decanted the wine for 45 minutes before we poured the first glasses and followed its development over the course of the evening. The wine was medium to dark garnet in colour and offered red fruit, strawberry, peanut, leather, tobacco, some cocoa and vanilla on the nose. On the palate the wine showed red fruit, tobacco, coffee, cocoa, spices and vanilla, with medium to medium-plus acidity, smooth, medium-level tannin, a good, smooth mouthfeel and very good length. The medium-bodied, balanced, appetizing wine drank very well. Modern yet classic, if that makes any sense to you, and unmistakably Rioja. A great wine!

Very high shoulder fill, transparent, colour, not too much brownish tones. Very fine and nuanced nose of classic mature Rioja Alta wines - a bit of pickle, mild farmyard, milky and warm, some very old leather, mild herbs, forest floor, dried flowers, balsamic notes. Fine and composed on the palate, silky and multilayered, very well interwoven. Class and finesse.

2 hour decant. Very traditional Rioja. Some forest floor aromas along with black berries. Tannins are very well integrated. Drinking very well right now.

This is a remarkable example of an Old World wine that easily beats many Napa cabs (even though one would argue it's akin comparing apples and oranges). This wine is full of energy, with 10+ years of life ahead. At this age, it requires patience and generous decanting. Upon opening, notes of cherry, dirt, mushroom and light barnyard on the palate. After 3+ hours of decanting, notes got more complex, with chocolate and added lightness on the palate. Very long finish. Tannins are clearly there but reasonably well integrated. Plenty of great, balanced acidity.

Wonderfully balanced - still black cherry fruit, but predominant cedar, cigar box, and earth on both nose and palate. Perfect choice for a casual wine and Spanish cheese night - brought out the nuttiness in the Manchego and herbal notes in the Iberico cheeses. A great value and will seek out again!

Outstanding Gran Riserva. Cork perfectly intact. Upon opening, the aroma is so fragrant, so enticing. Beautiful old world expression, with bramble, red fruit, vanilla, and sweet oak. Its the kind of wine that takes you to another place. Really holding well; will last for some time to come.

Alex's Promotion Party (Alex and Fiona's in AMK): Named after the year La Rioja Alta was founded (i.e. 1980), this was a lovely traditional Rioja blessed with tremendous aging. At almost 20 years old, it probably needs another 10 to 20 years in the bottle before hitting peak. The nose had a lovely fragrance of sweet ripe fruit, with marasca cherries and dried berries sprinkled with little motes of dusty earth and sweet spices. These were then chased by sweet coconutty accents from the American oak in which the wine had spent some 6 years of its life. Even from the nose, it was clear that this needed many years in the bottle yet. The palate already had a great, great balance and shape to it though, with lovely integrated acidity and fine tannins framing fresh flavours of sweet blackberries, dried cherries, with dusty earth and fragrant spice adding complexity on the midpalate. A touch of woody spice and a grip of tannins then stretched out in a nicely lengthy finish. This was still quite rich and primary, with a sweet Rioja ripeness to its fruit, but it was so beautifully poised and balanced that it seemed to glide through the mouth with an effortless elegance that made it lovely to drink even in its adolescent stage. Really excellent. Give it some 10, 15, maybe 20 years and it will be absolutely beautiful. (95% Tempranillo, 3% Graciano, 2% Mazuelo)

Decided to take one out of the box on delivery. This 2005 isn't ready for prime time yet but the potential is there. Very closed although somewhat improved on day 2. I will give this 3 to 4 years before trying again.

Just a note. I opened this bottle perhaps 3 weeks ago, and was left totally unimpressed by its muddy flavors and unimpressive nose. Put it in the fridge, and was about to toss it, when I decided to re- taste. A different wine! This wine was not a defective wine, but one that needed a LOT of time to relax with a bit of Oh-two.

Winner of the night, compared to two other Riojas on Mother's Day. (all left open to breathe for 1-2 hours)
Bright red fruits (mostly cherry) and masculine but balanced oak, a medium body with generous fruit and pleasing, substantial, food friendly acidity. Classic tannins now getting mellower with age.
Would not hold on to these too much longer.

This is what I think of, when I think of Rioja.

This bottle was very primary initially but the remaining half consumed the folloeing day was much improved. Two hours in the decanter made quite a difference. A much more traditionally styled Rioja emerged.
This vintage has additional garnacha in the blend but the usual high standard in the bottle. No rush to drink, obviously but a decant certainly recommended.

This is the last bottle of this wine I have. The previous two I tasted were downright awful while the ones before that were quite nice.
Opened this yesterday, this bottle is one of the good ones. Cedar, cherries and a smooth lightish weight for Rioja. Will report back tomorrow.

On open, clear garnet color, with red berries jam on nose. Started with strong acidity and alcohol. After few hours of decanting acidity was much better integrated. Hints of stables and plums shown up along with red berries. Still quite a lot of alcohol. Medium to full body with very long finish. Still improving, can easily hold few more years.

Traditional, this is already tastes and feels like a beautiful old Rioja but I'll wait until 2018 to try the next one. Could be a classic.

48 hour update fruit significantly faded. Revising my next bottle: 2017.

Just bonkers good. Intensely aromatic with all the black cherry, vanilla, cedar, cigar, and soil you could ever want. Equally intense on the palate, full bodied, full throttle, really complete and with a dense & energetic core of fruit that will serve this wine well over it's super long life. Should last just about forever.

Gorgeous. Grabbed this after a flowery marketing email from Gary's Wine. Has been a long time since tasting a reserve Rioja and this bottling tells you all you need to know about stepping up from the sub $15 Rioja to the $25-26 for this. Shows the aging potential for tempernillo, which turns a spicy, rustic varietal into a very elegant wine. Worth every penny. Exceptional fragrant flowery nose, which opens beautifully in the mouth. Not overpowering, just silky smooth front to back with a long lingering finish.

Drank at home with Lionel and Rachel. This was lovely. Again, it took a bit of time to get going, starting out a bit tight and shrill. It really blossomed with some half an hour in the glass though, showing a lovely nose of red cherries and berries, dried flowers and sweet spice, and then just a little whiff of cigarette smoke and toasty wood chips floating over an earthy base. Really pretty and perfumed. Like I said earlier, the palate was a little shrill at the start, showing tart sour cherry flavours. However, while there was always that streak of bright, almost tomato-ey acidity, it really plumped up nicely with juicy gobs of cherries and red berries lined with earth and red meat and gentle mineral notes. The flavours were starting to mellow and round up, but fine tannins and that lovely acidity always had the wine focused and nicely defined. Finish had a pleasant length to it, melting away in a juicy, almost lemony kiss and a little trail of dried earth and smoky spice. This really punches above its weight. Good now, it still has years of upside to it. I am looking for more to load up on.
