2007 Lagier Meredith Syrah

This cork showed above average ingress so I'm guessing a bit more evolved. Nonetheless, excellent. Tart berries, red plums, and cherry skins are followed by a subtle dusting of ash that borders mineral notes, and then pretty notes of perfume like florals and potpourri. Mostly resolved tannins, this came across in a middle spot between youth and age and would have benefitted from food. And yet, wonderful on its own.

Very likable, masculine, well balanced acidity and fruit... Had this side by side with a 97' grand cru, interesting pair up. It made a very amzing grand cru a bit sweet for me. First world problems ;) I would drink this again for sure.

Excellent wine. Bought as part of Berserkers Day. First one in the vertical that we pulled out. Drinking perfectly right now. Popped and poured. More old world in nature (aka, not overly fruit forward and a decent amount of earth). Very well done as always from this producer.

Popped and poured. This is a dark plum colored wine. On the nose, I get black cherry, blackberry, and a bit of firepit. In the mouth, this tastes of a black fruit pie with a bit of spice sprinkled on top, all of which leaves a lingering and complex flavor on the finish. This wine is showing its age a bit, and I think it is time to drink up. Nevertheless, it should continue to hold pleasure for a few more years. 92 points.

The nose showed intense, ripe blackberry and spice up front followed by notes of crushed blueberry, tobacco, green olive, violet florals and hints of animal musk. It was like velvety on the palate, yet fresh and lively throughout, as ripe black fruits and spice flooded the senses with sweet herbs and hints cherry liquor. The finish showed spiced cherry and blackberry fruit with mineral tones lingering long.

This was singing after an hour in the decanter.

Dark purple color with a garnet rim.

The nose had a good bit of fruit at first, but after an hour or two in decanter it really shined. Lucious dark fruit, smoky cured meat, spices, licorice, brambles.

Medium acid. Medium plus tannin, we'll developed and soft.

Blackberry and spices on the palate. Beautiful wine. Better now than the 2001.

The nose was earthy with a mix of sweet and savory blackberry, plum sauce and spice, hints of rosemary, green olive, crushed stone and undergrowth. It spread across the palate like waves of heavy silk, driven by a saline minerality, offset by ripe dark fruits, peppery spice and charred meat, which lasted into the finish. Dark fruits lingered on the palate for well over a minute. The 2001 Lagier Meredith Syrah is beautifully balanced and firmly in its drinking window, speaking more of the northern Rhone than California. Well done.

Second tasting of this wine; purchased at wine store. Previously I found the wine unpleasant and perhaps off/flawed. This bottle was markedly different, and more in line with other positive reviews: beautiful, deep, long and plush nose of roasted dark fruits/tar; fine mouth and decent length. Very savory nose one wants to come back to. Length fine, but did not linger as did the nose.

This bottle was popnpoured, followed over 3 hours. Its initial aromas and flavors were as described by others. What was detracting about this bottle was a maderized raisiny almost porty subtly on the finish that was intermittently present through the night.

Some minty menthol cigar ash reminiscent of old aussie syrah also revealed itself intermittently.

Wine felt disjointed. One person wondered if there were some storage (albeit minimal) aberrations.

I think its on the precipice of decline. Storage should not have been an issue - direct from winery on Beserker Day 2015.

Popped and poured. This is a robust black wine with modest sediment at the end of the bottle. On the nose, I get plum sauce, tobacco, and some secondary aromas of old chest that are much like a nice Bordeaux. In the mouth, the acid leads with some medium fruit leading into a spicy finish. Overall, this is a good wine albeit one that may be on the decline. 92 points.

When I put this to my nose, I was greeted by perhaps the most beautiful wine aromas that I've had in a long time. And it wasn't just me. Everyone at the wine tasting was commenting on the nose.

IT IS WORTH THE RETAIL PRICE FOR JUST THE NOSE ALONE!

This is a medium+ bodied classic Syrah with very nice acidity and subtle hints of meat, smoke, and black stone.

But Wow for that nose!
