2005 Littorai Pinot Noir The Haven

Sonoma Coast more

PnP. Perfect cork. Light red with definite browning at the rim. Subtle nose of forest floor, spice, mixed with dark fruits. Medium weight on the palate with a lovely balance of secondary spice and fruit; long finish with an intriguing sweet (brown sugar?) note at the end. This is quite ripe but it doesn't show. I would drink this sooner rather than later. Nice wine.

I am rating this highly due to respect for a new world producer who can make a white wine that can go this distance. Of course, its best days were 10 years ago, but it is drinkable and the balance has kept it lively enough. i wouldn't suggest anyone go out and buy a bottle, but I enjoyed this for what it was. Not much fruit, but apples lemons and minerals are faintly there. Honeyed and sherried and caramel. Nice 13.8% and high acid protected this guy. Mays canyon is probably my least favorite littorai chard so kudos to Lemon for this one.

{winery visit} This one seems to have it all - structure, complexity and lots of detailed personality. Hard to process at times, this one takes the brain in a hundred different directions - aromas, flavors, change, repeat. Has the stuffing to be a wow wine on several levels. My favorite on the day, just brilliant. highly recommended

{winery visit} Finely structured, with a darker core than I was expecting, this has good raw material; I think it needs another 12-24 months to more fully integrate. Some inner beauty, but it's having a little difficulty with its lines right now; at least today's bottle was.

{winery visit} Certainly in a more forward, richer style than the others in the lineup, this would no doubt be the crowd favorite. But, for me part of the enjoyment is the search, the inquiry; with this one, it's all front and center. Drink now with some air, it's completely delicious and for my tastes, not one that's likely to improve on today's fresh, vibrant showing. recommended

{winery visit} Same impression as yofog, " Darker, herbal, sous bois Anderson typical fruit, herbal...". Textbook Anderson Valley profile, with a great sense of place and variety. An understated tension and purity of fruit here that bodes well for the future. Give it a few hours of air if opening anytime soon, this one's got a lot to say. recommended

{winery visit} I had more questions after tasting than I did before it - this one is a head-scratcher in that it's keeping the secrets deep inside for now. A rich display of minerals, orchard fruits, loam, sweet hay and even some spice and nut tones weaving in and out; there's a lot of raw material here, give this another 18-24 months in bottle, it's going to be great. highly recommended

14.2% which is high for littorai and Anderson valley nowadays. Masculine. Red fruit. Dark cherry. Cin ammon. Spice. This has aged so well. Even red burg struggles to do this. The nose was funky and unpleasant, but the palate and finish were nothing like it. This is a special wine from a special producer. If u have one bottle drink it now but I wouldn't be surprised if this lasted several more years.

A Visit to Littorai: This wine comes across a little tough today. The nose isn't terribly powerful and shows youthful punchy cherry and raspberry aromas with an herbal edge. I'll chalk this up to the trend on my trip of '13's being quite shut down at the moment. The palate has some of the highest tannins yet of this line-up with medium plus acid and a medium finish. Certainly could and should get better in time.

A Visit to Littorai: What a fantastic wine! Gorgeous nose of cherry, strawberry, dried cranberry, blood orange, incense, smoke, damp earth, cardamom and cinnamon. Definitely some whole cluster going on here. The nose is flat out gorgeous. Medium plus tannin and medium plus acid lend a youthful mouthfeel to this structured wine. Certainly needs some time to round out the mouthfeel. I can't imagine the peak for this wine is any sooner than 10 years away. The 13.8% alcohol, is indiscernible.

A Visit to Littorai: Seems to pour just a touch darker than the previous wine but still fully transparent to the core. This wine comes across a tad brighter and more fruit-forward. The nose is of vanilla, powdered sugar, strawberry tart, damp earth in the background and mixed shrubby herbs. The palate reveals more prominent tannins and medium plus acid. The finish built on red, slightly confected fruit. 13.1% alcohol declared.

A Visit to Littorai: Pours quite light in color. Fully transparent with a cherry core. Nose is incredibly precise and pure. I found this to be entirely red fruited. The nose is of raspberry, pomegranate, light cherries, wet earth, light brown spice, and lovely high toned florals. There is a light kiss of dusty tannin and medium plus acid on the palate. The finish is medium plus in length built on red fruit and florals. Just the slightest touch of alcohol on the finish (13.8% alcohol declared). I was getting some whole cluster character on this wine lending some secondary earth and spice to the aromatics. My guide confirmed this, but he didn't specify what percentage was whole cluster fermented.

A Visit to Littorai: This comes across to me as leaning to the rich side of things. The nose blasts butter, caramel, vanilla, candied lemon, caramel apple and some vaguely tropical notes of mango and pineapple. The palate enters with a rich mouthfeel with some evident some oak poking through via caramel notes. The finish is creamy textured, moderately acidic and medium plus in length. 20% new oak, barrel fermented, 13.1% alcohol. Very good, but a tad on the rich side for my tastes, at least today.

A Visit to Littorai: This pours a light neon pink. The nose, as I had expected from the colour is equally pungent with bright high toned underripe cherry, watermelon and peach. The palate is high acid with a perception of just a touch of dusty tannin and a bright tangy medium finish. Good, but I think I still prefer Provençal examples.

We PnP this wine, although it deserves at least an hour+ decant. The longer this wine sits the more delicious it becomes. Another masterpiece by Ted. Incredibly supple, well integrated, elegant yet rich PN. Still quite youthful with a nice biting acidity. Amazing leap out of the glass nose of red tart cherry, forest floor and cinnamon. Intoxicating flavors of wild strawberries, cherries pie filling, cinnamon, black pepper and a bit of loam.

Pretty, medium nose has hazelnut, apple fruit and crushed stones. But the aromas seem to be holding something back. Palate has loads of tension and cut over medium weight orchard fruit. Fresh, crisp finish. I like this now but think the best is yet to come as this unfolds reveals more flesh and complexity.

Served cold, off a pop and pour, this showed pretty clumsy. However, after letting the wine warm up it started drinking much better, a complete turn around actually. At 55+, it's almost salty, very saline, mineral, even if a little more butter and cream than ideal, it's showing some real good stripes. Tasty meyer lemon, solid acidity, and a nice mineral driven, persistent finish.

The aroma is a bit misleading, almost comical strawberry bubblegum. However, the flavor has a bitter, spicy streak and the robust acidity cut right through spicy Szechuan 'Water-Boiled Fish' (水煮鱼). This might be the best rosé of pinot out there.

Very nice bottle of wine. Less lush and rounded as some CA bottles. Restrained, but very good fruit. Much more Burgundian in style. I know that sounds typical for Littorai wines, but you really see it with the notes of apple and pear, great acidity (both very Sonoma coast specific) and good finish with moderate alcohol. Great spot for this wine.
