2002 Littorai Chardonnay Mays Canyon

This tasted almost exactly like a premoxed White Burgundy. Nutty, frayed, bitter, showing some rotten character. We didn't finish our glasses. Having had an excellent 2002 Heintz recently, and a fantastic bottle of the 93 Mays a while back, and seeing other positive notes on this wine from the last few years, I suspect this was not correct rather than simply too old.

Dinner at AG with Ted Lemon (AG, stockholm): Great wine, very different in outlook from the Hirsch line-up by same producer, this was more elegant, and not nearly as mature as the 09 hirsch. Ted offered the comment that it had almost nebbiolo like qualities, which was a great descriptor. I need to go to Anderson Valley and try some wine was my conclusion!

Dinner at AG with Ted Lemon (AG, stockholm): Great nose with a lot of lovely pinot funk and forest floor and smokey matsutake mushroom oomph, as well as some asian spice, dark, ripe fruit on this one but also good freshness, just a little root beer zing at the end makes me think this is perhaps at its peak now and over next few years. Many people really liked this above the younger versions but I could not let go of the perfect balance between sunny ripe american pinot and steely fresh elegance that the 2012 Hirsch from Littorai showed last night.

Dinner at AG with Ted Lemon (AG, stockholm): Wow, this wine was tight as a nutshell, but the quality of fruit and structure and elegance makes me believe this wine will outshine all the rest of tonights pinots by far. now, 93ish, for the future 95+ (and I am not one to make predictions of the future lightly).

Dinner at AG with Ted Lemon (AG, stockholm): Pleasant enough and a lot of things going on on the nose, but this wasn't showing as well as the others tonight. Recently bottled according to Ted L so perhaps slight bottle or travel shock. Given the pedigree of the producer and the vineyard, I am sure this will be great going forward.

Dinner at AG with Ted Lemon (AG, stockholm): this had a great nose with lot of pinosity, a little less elegant than the single vineyard designations but smooth and spicy and full of ripe berries and decent freshness. lovely wine!

Dinner at AG with Ted Lemon (AG, stockholm): fantastic chardonnay. One of the best from this vineyard I have tried. While always racy and mineral-laden and elegant, this rendering of the CH chard by Littorai already offers a mysterious sexy complexity. likely to be even better in a few years but a killer chard from day 1. Go get it wherever you can!

Over four nights, gassed and refrigerated in between: A surprisingly pronounced cola smell and taste persisted throughout. Is this characteristic of this vineyard? It was beautifully balanced, and held very well over the four nights (we skipped #3), and was most enjoyable, and increasingly complex, on the last. We will wait a few years to open its sibling.

Spice. Fruit cake. Cranberry. Raspberry. Bright to medium red fruit.. So Anderson valley. Low alcohol. I wonder if these littorai blends are not only the better value but the better wines compared to the single vineyard stuff. Give this a year.

Tasted blind. Darkest wine of the flight. Crazy aromatics. Big time funk, oak, celery, spicy, stemmy nose. Lean and bright, high toned, with pomegranate, plum and dark tea notes. Big time tannin. Super complex. Needs time. Real outlier of the flight. My NR, Group #2 WOTN.

Salmon colored, with a nose of bright strawberries and rhubarb. Bright acidity and piercing flavors of strawberry, watermelon, and rhubarb leading to a delightful flavor palate and finish. Very tasty juice.

PnP. Black cherry and raspberry (almost liquored) with a touch of cola, vegetal, cinnamon. It started rather heavy and sappy and was missing some acid and structure that keeps the best True Sonoma Coast in check with a bit of verve. Over 2 hours it remained rather suckling. It felt as if the fears for '09 hang times were coming true before my very eyes, so I turned to the vinturi i secretly despise.

Wow. SO much better. Actually the slightest waft of funk to start but then quickly leading to baking spice and savory wine with dried herbs, hints of underbrush all which dominants the raspberry-creme before leading to a loamy finish. The tannin actually came back to a bit of firmness and grip, but this is still extremely decadent. Old worlders need not apply. For me this is right on that edge of being too much.

13.7% alcohol. Fragrant, modestly proportioned, softer textured, and nicely balanced with red cherry, raspberry, a subtle herbal/earthy note, and a pronounced and penetrating spiciness that really ratchets up the complexity. To my palate, this wine is very much open for business and in its drinking window. Popped, poured, and consumed over the course of about 90 minutes. Dinner at Meritage.

PnP. Medium red. Lovely nose of cherry and raspberry with a hint of spice. Rich fruit on the palate with a sappy quality which balances the ripeness. Lovely wine though on the riper, richer end of the Littorai spectrum.

Wonderful nose, cranberry AV fruit. Nice fruit on the palate, good acidity in the midpalate, but the whole thing falls a bit flat for me on the finish. Sort of thin and not enough structure to tie it all together.

I grabbed this from the cellar at the last minute, so it was initially a bit warmer than I preferred, but no matter, it was still focused and delicious. I liked the mixture of bright citrus and more elegant tropical fruit (think pineapple instead of mango), and it showed great focus on the palate. Over time there was some subtle spice, but the wine was generally fruit-focused with a bracing finish. Very nice.

Light ruby colored with a brownish tinge around the edge. As the color suggests, this wine presents as maturing/at peak with red fruit, sweet spice, Asian spice, and meaty notes. Moderately proportioned, texturally smoothly and silky, nicely balanced, and seemingly structurally resolved. Recommendation to drink. Dinner at Restaurant Alma.

Drinking very well here but will age well. I'm going to hold my remaining bottle to see how e cherry notes develop. To me this wine is well balanced but just a touch more red forward fruit than I'd prefer. There is a chance that fades and we get more leather, meats and forest floor with age.

PnP. Light red with a clear rim. Initially quite closed. But over an hour or so opens up and reveals lovely red fruits with orange peel on the nose - and a very bright character. On the palate medium weight excellent balance and showing secondary characteristics of spices and citrus. Still seems to need some time to soften on the finish which is long and somewhat tight.

This is an unusually rich, ripe wine from Littorai, befitting the vintage I suppose. Dark, relatively opaque color. Rich, sweet blackberry fruit, a hint of appleskin that a lot of AV pinot has, plenty of baking spices. The fruit profile is riper and sweeter than I'd like, but this still has good acidity and refined, velvety tannic structure -- at age 13 it is still quite primary and undeveloped, holding up very well, and with a few hours of air, the structure firms up and nicely balances out the sweet fruit, although with that odd sweet/tart yin/yang that makes me suspect acidification. Although not my preferred style, this is certainly a well executed take on a ripe CA vintage; it's miles from syrupy or overblown or alcoholic. I understand the CT raves -- those who like their PN just a little riper and sweeter than me would really enjoy this.

Medium ruby color turning transparent at the rim with a nose of dried herbs, mild tobacco, and scorched earth. The palate is medium-bodied with a silky texture. Flavors of red cherry and vanilla form the core with a lingering spice all throughout. Delicately balanced and elegant on a seductively elevated alcohol level at 13.7%. Finishes with hints of smoke. Drink now until 2025. 92+
