37th Annual Zinfandel Retrospective (R&D's): At first the bouquet is slightly vegetal, but that blows off after a few minutes in the glass revealing dark fruit, meat, spice box and lavender. Dark berry fruit on the palate, along with pepper, spice and roasted game. Integrated and balanced with a lengthy finish. At peak IMO.

Black raspberry & black pepper on the nose with good dark berry fruit, acidity and soft tannins in a very nice balance. Lengthy finish with a hint of iodine.

Had an '05 RRV Carlisle syrah open, and some filets mignons grilling, and decided to pop this bottle (obtained at the source in Tain l'Ermitage) as an old world counterpart. On the first night the wine was enjoyable, but I somewhat regretted the decision, as there was a predominant note of olives. With more air, the wine blossomed and had a lot more to offer on night 2. Could be mistaken for Californian in its concentration, although the aromas and flavors were more typically northern Rhone -- olives, meat, plums, some notes of dark berries, but not as forward or as sweet as the Carlisle (which was a lovely wine in its own regard). Certainly accessible now, but has the tannins and acids to go up to another decade, I think.

Drank 2 bottles of this at a restaurant with friends. Had the wine steward decant a second bottle while we drank the first. That extra hour of decant made a big difference so this rating is based on a 1 hour decant time.

The nose was open, dark fruit and cherry. Medium to full body, soft. Compared to other CnPs up in this price range though it's not as complex. I can get a 2011 Pegau for the same price.

Worth trying but I'm not going to be buying any for my cellar.

Food: Chinese Cantonese
Duration: 2 hours
Condition: perfect
Aroma: white flower, cream, dried apricot, Chinese tea, red date, honey
Notes: amazing freshness in this vintaged wine. Medium to full bodied, long lasting aftertaste. I really enjoy this wine. I'd purchase more of this wine if I can find any. Still a very young wine today, drink now-2023. Beautiful wine.

Cork crumbled. Showed some signs of light past seepage.
Vin de Paille made with marsanne.
The cork popped loudly, an indication that bottle fermentation had proceeded. No significant deposit.
V:old gold
N: beautiful honeyed and floral notes typical of aged marsanne.
Richly textured and dry finish, despite labelled 15.5% abv and other reports of an exceedingly sweet wine. Solid wine.
Drink or hold, should last a while.

Raspberry, blackberry, flavors with a synthetic black cherry that linger. Some off putting cooked vegetable that comes through on the palate. Not great but drinkable.

Deep red/violet and clear in the glass. Stunningly beautiful nose of concentrated dark fruit, coffee, smoke, ink, and spice. Intense and concentrated on the palate with waves of tart, dark fruit, spice, smoke, and earth. Mysterious and beautiful bitter quality. Very firm structure. Appropriate alcohol concentration. Really wonderful bottle.

The color is still sparkling transparent garnet red. In the bouquet a rustic wine with beautiful garrigue, anise and a touch of barnyard. On the palate a beautiful and complex wine with sweet licorice, a lot of good garrigue, spices, beautiful acidity and soft tannin. Overall a really well balanced, elegant and complex wine. Fully mature now and it can be cellared a few more years as well.

Just a hint of burnished gold on the rim of this dark ruby, limpid wine. Red currents, sour cherries, basmati rice, damp leather on the nose, then pepper and hints of hard candies, garrigue. Rather tart yet the fruit is ripe and flavorful. Tannins are mostly resolved and very fine, and the long finish is dominated by flinty minerals. Lovely, mature, just what I look for in a 19-year old Cote Rotie. But don't rush to drink it up: This could last for 50 years...

Wow did this wine blow me away. I have never had a syrah so rustic and tannic but still came off as varietally correct. Deep dark berries, melted licorice, dust, coffee, celeray seed, horse fur, cherries, coco, seaweed, iron and long grany tannins. Was integrated that of a mature wine but was so complex and was still vibrant. Would have loved to sit down and have with a meal. Thanks for sharing Motz!

Brought my last bottles to tonight's wine group dinner at Two Chefs. I - and several others - thought this was an excellent with the swordfish second course. Light yellow color. Floral nose that is a good tip-off to a Rhone wine. Full bodied with good acidity and length. Wish i had bought more.

A lot of butter candy, blossom, yellow fruits and some spiciness in the bouquet. On the palate full bodied, round and even a bit fat. Very mild yellow fruits like pineapple, litchi, blossom and some caramel. In the group opinions differed a bit; some thought this wine is already a bit too old. Imho it is still a very ok wine.

Poured for friends at a tasting I hosted in a flight of Rhone varietal wines. Dark berries, loads of every conceivable variety of freshly cracked peppercorn, intense earthiness, smoldering coal and ash, sous-bois, and ridiculous minerality on the bouquet. The most bracing Syrah I have ever come across, immensely structured. High acid, medium plus to high tannin. Indeed, it is mind-bending that any Syrah could feature such levels of tannic grip. Rustic yet luxurious mouthfeel and very, very long.

Tasted over two days and if anything the tannic structure was more pronounced on the second day. This is young and only time will tell how it evolves. It could develop into a wine for the ages. Recommend holding until 2018-2020 or beyond. 95-97.
