1989 M. Chapoutier Ermitage Le Pavillon

Hermitage Syrah more

Picture sitting around an open campfire, with wet earth, cracked pepper, roasted herbs, fennel and sweet black currants and you get the idea on the nose. On the palate, the wine is intensely concentrated, powerful and almost dense, yet all of this is in harmony. The fruit is ripe, soft, fresh and sweet, the tannins are polished and the finish is long. Double decanted for 4 hours prior to serving, this was a great showing for the first wine from Michel Chapoutier that announced things were changing at his winery.

Purity, intensity, incredible length, minerality, freshness and uniqueness of character shine though with this stunner. Powerful, yet graceful, double decanted 4 hours in advance of serving, this beauty shows a floral, peppery, earthy, black cherry and crushed rock character that does not quit.

Stunning in every sense of the word with its intense display of sweet black cherry liqueur, crushed rocked, licorice, smoke and black raspberry jam. The was coats your palate, teeth and gums with flavor that does not quit. Double decanted about 4 hours in advance, the wine is the real deal. Still youthful, this promises to be even better in the years to come.

Double decanted about 4 hours before serving helped soften the wine. Still youthful in appearance, and not fully developed in the nose, with some tannins left to soften, the concentrated, lush, dense wine is loaded with sweet, ripe fruits, earth, smoke, licorice and black cherries. The wine is starting to open, but it promises to be better in 5-10 years. This bottle, from the same case as the previous bottles tasted was a markedly better tasting experience.

Inky, black with purple in color, this massive, concentrated, dense, thick, tannic wine is as you would expect, young and offering only promise of what is to come at this stage. The licorice, espresso, blackberry liqueur and smoke filled nose is surpassed by the intense, mouth coating waves of dense fruit and ripe tannins. Based on recent tastings of older vintages, this will demand at least 20 more years in the cellar before it really starts to open up.

Bouteille et bouchon en parfaite condition. High fill.
A terminer rapidement. Bouteille nettement inférieure à celle dégustée il y a 6-7 ans.

Wow. This is my first bottle in 2 & 1/2 years of Croix de Bois, my third overall. It is outstanding, yet not as highly rated as my previous bottle. Massive legs. Dark on the eye, with pale edges. Fascinating aromas of woodlands, harvests, and even jungles -- this is alive on the nose. Complex flavors on the palate, somewhat muted fruits but waves of herbs, gourds and spices. Deeply engaging, but not particularly pleasing. Does that make sense? I keep hoping for the faintest impression this wine wants me to "like" it. But it does not. Rather it wants me to be "transfixed." And I am.

A nice southern Rhone style wine that goes very well with a red sauce - a great "pizza" wine. Dark fruit with a lighter body, cedar and light plus tannic finish with a sangiovese type of grittiness, which is probably why it went so well with a red sauce. We also describe the finish as biting; this makes it better with food than on its own.

A pretty arrangement of red and dark fruits, dried petals, earth, and spice on the nose. Focused flavors and easy drinking the palate. Good acidity and gentle tannin structure. Finishes clean. This was better than expected.

Chateauneuf du Pape (Bronte, Sydney): rich red, some rust. Pure ripe nose, leather and violets. Still with some strong tannins but reasonably well balanced. Nice ripe fruits, leather and earth with just a hint of spice.

Chateauneuf du Pape (Bronte, Sydney): pale red. Fragrant but green herbal nose, not at all attractive. Nicely aged red berry flavours come through but the green character again dominates. Not good.

Popped and poured. This is a good dark red wine with minimal sediment at the end of the bottle. On the nose, I get spice, pepper, and some bramble. In the mouth, this is smooth and spicy, leaving a finish marked by minerals and a bit of tannin. Overall, this is a rustic, pepper-shaker of a wine -- one without a lot of fruit that exists to amplify and accompany food rather than play a leading role. Still, this is some quality pepper. Drink now through 2022. 91 points.

This is developing beautifully. Tonight there's rich, bitter honey undertones to the tropical fruit, baking spice (mostly nutmeg), firm minerality and a bright acidic core. Overall, rich, unctuous and hedonistic. Just delicious!!

Deep purple in color.
Cassis, spice on the palate. Evolved with time in the glass. A fairly direct, big wine. Some minerality, leather, meaty notes.
Still a baby, I suspect this still has a very long life ahead.
Decant if possible.

Very simple wine. Almost no nose. Just some faint notes of burnt fruit and wet leaves. The palate has a slight hint of berries and chocolate. The only true highlight was the smoothness of the wine. Nice sweetness. I can't imagine this will improve with more age. Drink up.

Nose - lovely, caramlised lemon, mandarin, lime cordial, lifted honey suckle, grape fruit, wow. Palate - let down from the nose, unbalanced, not heavy, quite sweet and sugar not integrated, sour edge. Aged in oak barrels apparently, not sure it added much.
