Dark berry flavor, jammy. Slight acidity that balances the wine nicely. Full-bodied and great with meat. Drank with carne asada tacos.

2012 Mas Doix Priorat Les Crestes

Grenache Blend, Grenache more

Blinds with AA and other SF folks (SF—Inner Sunset): Summary:

Crunchy red cherry and bright blackberry with a kiss of well-integrated oak and zippy acidity that brightens a rich, ripe frame. An expressive if uncomplicated Garnacha.

Score: Around 8.5
--------------------------------

Blind 2- Red Wine

Visual:
Clear, day-bright. Bright red in the glass with moderate minus concentration and a bit of violet character. No gas or sediment. Moderate tears.

Nose:
Moderate intensity, hint of oxidation (bitter-almond acetaldehyde - probably due to the fact that it had been coravined over a month, though possibly stylistic).
Red fruit, some peach character - ripe. Hint of dark, dusty blackberries. No oak influence on the nose. [After the reveal and some air time, I re-tasted it and the nose had a bit more vanilla and overall sweet oak character.]
Youthful, straightforward.

Palate:
Fleshy red fruit. Alcohol is a bit elevated- 14%? [actually 14.5%]
Low plus tannins. Elevated acidity.
Ripe but also primarily savory.
Oak: I don’t get overt oak. Maybe a kiss of oak, along with some oxidative aging. Not much oak, or older barrels.

Youthful. Straightforward.

Initial conclusion:
Either a somewhat traditionally-styled new-world wine, or an old world wine in a modern style from a warm climate.
Based on the red fruits, alcohol, color, and low tannins, Grenache is a possibility, though the acidity is pretty high for Grenache.
The slight bit of oak would be unusual in Southern Rhone.

I think this is either a modern Tempranillo with very little oak, or a modern Grenache from Spain. Other things I considered: extremely ripe St-Joseph (color is too light and red for Syrah). New World Grenache - e.g. California (acid is pretty high and overall I’m not getting as ripe fruit). I’m pretty confused by this, but based on my premonition that it’s American oak, and Tim’s reminder that Spanish Garnacha can be higher acid, I’m going….

Garnacha, Spain. 2012.

Actual:
Les Crestes Priorat, Grenache, Spain, 2012!
80% Grenache, 10% Carignan, 10% Syrah
Les Crestes
Priorat
14.5%
$40-50

Discussion:
The producer website says the wine was vinified in stainless steel, then aged for 8 months in second-use French oak. This explains why I picked up very light oak. Also the Carignan and Syrah explain why there might be some acidic lift.

Drank over three days. Beautiful bouquet upon opening, reminiscent of high quality, youthful Margaux, with ripe boysenberry and blackberry scents showing prominently. As the wine opened it became apparent that it is made in a modern, fruit forward, oaky style, albeit with high acid. By the third day high-pitched, Rioja-like acid and (oak imparted?) sappiness dominated. The acid might allow this to develop into something more interesting...but does it have the stuffing to age long enough to get there? 91-92.

7/3/2015 - Eric Guido Likes this wine: 94 points

The 2007 takes the intensity of Priorat and balances it perfectly with a nose of ripe blackberry, raisin, dark floral tones, tobacco and herbal lift. On the palate, I found silky textures on a mid-weight frame with notes of wild berry, dark chocolate, herbs and hints of tannin tugging at the palate. This was balanced throughout and finished on focused fruit intensity. The 2007 should enjoy a long drinking window and improve for over a decade in the cellar. I hope to taste it again some day.

The nose was rich and intense with blueberry and raspberry fruits, floral tones, spice and crushed stone. On the palate, I found velvety textures with an energetic wave of acidity keeping things fresh and lifted as sappy dark fruits, cocoa and minerals coated the sense. The finish showed a hint of its warm vintage heat, with rich fruits and a hint of herbs. This may not be the most balanced Mas Doix, yet it is undeniably enjoyable.

The 2006 is a testament to the longevity of Salenques, as a bouquet of dried fruits, florals, dusty soil and minerals greeted me. It’s just starting to show beautiful tertiary character. Then on the palate, a juicy wave of silky wild berry, spice and minerals splashed against the senses. It finished delicate and refined, in a beautiful place now, yet far from the end of it’s drinking window.

The nose was rich with intense dark fruits, herbs and minerals. On the palate, this was surprisingly fresh and lifted, showing wild berry and spice with beautiful balance and poise. It finished long on dark fruit, bitter chocolate and palate cleansing acidity. The 2012 Salenques is a pretty and understate wine that is drinking well now, yet has the potential to develop much further in the cellar.

The nose was pretty and lifted with crushed wild berry, spice and chalky minerals. On the palate, it was ripe yet refreshing with silky textures and mouth filling notes of cherry and blackberry. It finished fresh with not a tiring note to its frame. Not overthought, but frankly, I feel like I could drink this all day it’s so easy to like.

The ‘2011 Salanques’ is an extremely elegant and well-structured Priorat wine grown on the pronounced slopes (slate soils / llicorella) surrounding the village of Poboleda (province of Tarragona / Catalunya), a blend of 65 % Garnatxa and 25 % Carinyena (from 70-90 years old vines) completed with 10 % Syrah (younger vines). Aged for 14 months in Allier barriques (half new and half one year old). The wine is still in its adolescent phase, so it should be decanted at least two hours before consumption. Intense black red color with purple edges and a splendid bouquet displaying scents of sour cherry, incense, leather, Mediterranean herbs and fine vanilla nuances. The powerful but elegant palate reveals concentrated plum and berry fruit, an excellent balance and great depth, silky textured tannins and a juicy well-balanced acidity. Solid, persistent finish. An outstanding Priorat wine that will evolve for several years and provide pleasure from now to 2023.

Not what I recall from a few years ago. Dry earth, light black fruit and faint background licorice on the nose. Tannins have mellowed, however overall the palate has largely dried up with some sweet red fruit and earth. High acid and no real finish. Decanted 1 hour, consumed intermittently over the following two. Was better after two hours than initially but this wine (or this bottle at least) will not be measurably better with either more bottle or air time.

This wine is drinking nicely. There seems to be no consensus whatsoever among reviewers, but here is what we found: dark, full-bodied, present but not overwhelming tannins. Shows some fruit--mostly black cherry--along with tar (good tar, not bad tar) and lavender. It's a food wine; pair it with red meat, grilled food, etc.

Dinner @ home; 6/4/2015-7/14/2015: Coravin 6/4/15: Medium-deep purple color without any bricking; nose has overripe candied cherry, plummy, very modern without much subtlety; palate is full bodied, very high alcohol/heat, moonshine cherry, light tannins barely noticeable, acidity is medium-high and keeps the wine feeling fresh even with so much alcohol; finish is medium length. This is very modern styled, and not that interesting to me. Would make an acceptable wine <$15, but at this price is poor. I don't see any reason to let it mature. 80
7/14/15: Deep purple; ripe plummy fruit similar to when first opened, a bit more complexity than last time with dustiness; medium bodied, alcohol seems maybe a bit better integrated than the first time but still high, integrated tannins are fairly light, ripe, but simple. Pleasant enough. 83-84 today. I was a bit harsh when first opened.
