2001 Mas de Boislauzon Châteauneuf-du-Pape

4th Saturday Group brown bagger (Our house): A backup I put into the tasting at the last minute to even out the flights, opened just before the first flight was poured.

Aromas of roasted game, black fruits, pepper and herbs. Softened tannins with flavors of dried herbs, lavender, red berries, plum and dark fruit. Balanced; lengthy finish. Lovely. Guessed CdP, but did not think it was our Boislauzon. A terrific showing for this wine, which is certainly at peak based on this bottle (sadly my last).

The 2009 Boislauzon is a very nice wine from a well-renowned producer. Tonight this wine shows dark fruits, classical morellos and plum compote as well as sun warm beeswax. The palate is still a bit dark but slowly maturing and coming around in a very nice way. Tannins and the pleasant acidity are nicely integrated. This wine will continue to develop but it surely does not hurt tasting it tonight. A lovely effort!

Dark fruits, herbs and spices and some barnyard in the bouquet. On the palate a sweet start of ripe fruits, good (sweet) spiciness and soft acidity. The tannin is also soft and round, but still firm and youthful. Holds the middle between modern made and elegance. Really well made wine that might improve a bit with some more ageing. Until 2020 should be no problem. 91+

NOSE: ripe, non-descript red/purple berry mix; pleasant savory edge; a bit high-toned.

BODY: magenta-garnet color of medium-deep depth; clear; medium-full bodied.

TASTE: big/ripe; alc. can be tasted a little; red/purple berry jam; a touch earthy; low to medium-low acidity; touch of tannin; somewhat muddled; strikes me as a Drink Now wine. Gut impression score: mid 80's.

Not as good as prior bottles. This one the fruit was a bit muted, almost like it was going into or coming out of a dumb phase. More decanting time did not materially change it. Tannins still have a bit of grittiness to them but the wine was overall smooth nonetheless. Not sure what to make of this wine, but it was certainly quite pleasant and good nonetheless.

From 100% old vine, Mourvedre, the wine is incredibly dark in color. The nose, with its spicy melange of black fruits, flowers and herbs gets the wine going. On the palate, the wine is rich, fat, deep, concentrated and lushly textured. Still young, this should be better in 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25 more years as it has the stuffing to last. With a production of only 300 cases, if this is a wine you want to cellar, grab a few bottles now, because sooner or later, it will be close to impossible to find.

Tar and dark fruit in the nose, the taste is very structured. Good acidity and some heat. Complex and long, with chewy tannins.

Dark in color. Nose has plum, anise and a note like grilled tomato. Soft mouthfeel. Get more Mourvèdre (or possibly Syrah?) than Grenache with both mouth and the lush fruit. Dark berry and floral notes. Interesting palate, definitely unique with a funkiness I came to like...which might not appeal to all. Tannins really stuck to the teeth (to its detriment)...maybe soften further with a few more years.

Dark/purple in colour. Big aromas on the nose - spices, kirsch liqueur, cured meat, cherry preserves, smoke. On the palate a bit heavy and drying, intense fruit, fresh. A bit angular. Good length. Needs food. Excellent QPR. 86-88

Tar, earth, cherries, a little violette, something green, soy sauce, tobacco lots of dark fruit and a little earth.

Medium acidity, medium+ body and marked tannins. High intensity and a long finish.

Very high quality, and fun to try a CdP made with 100% Mourvedre. Wouldn't buy at almost $100 though.

Really unimpressive. Initially it had some syrah-like smoked meat notes on the nose, but after that it was just big and boozy with a strange dusty aspect to it. Drinkable, but far from exciting.
