Hard to say, don’t touch this until summer of 2023. There is a lot going on here, but it needs to settle down. After 3 hours of decant, it really opens up nicely. Ruddy red in colour, some viscosity but looks like. Nose is roses, vanilla, orange, all over the place and all good. Tastes red fruit, woody and orange peel and floral. Heavy on tannins but very fine, brique rather than chewy. Tried again at 5 hours and getting better. Will try again in 2023.

100% Nebbiolo from the Bric Balin cru, located immediately south from the village of Barbaresco, planted in 1971 and 1985. Aged for at least 18 months in French oak barriques (70% new). 14,5% alcohol. Tasted blind.

Somewhat translucent and moderately evolved pomegranate color with a slightly syrupy-brown hue. The nose feels sweet, dark-toned and slightly oaky with aromas of licorice and ripe black cherries, some evolved gamey tones, a little bit of toasty mocha oak, light plummy notes of dark fruits, a woody hint of savory oak spice, a touch of tar and a boozy whiff of alcohol. The wine feels evolved and velvety yet pretty firm and structured on the palate with a rather full body and lush, moderately oak flavors of licorice and toasty mocha oak, some ripe black cherry tones, a little bit of juicy dark plum, light evolved nuances of gamey meat, a hint of tar and a touch of woody oak spice. The high acidity and ample, grippy tannins lend a rather stern and muscular overall feel to the wine. The finish is long, grippy and quite dark-toned with a brooding, somewhat sweet-toned aftertaste of toasty mocha oak and milk chocolate, some woody notes of savory oak spice, a little bit of tar, light sweetly-fruited nuances of juicy black cherries and dark plums, a hint of licorice root and an evolved touch of meaty umami.

An impressively structured and tightly-knit but still noticeably toasty and modern Barbaresco where the oak is still very much to the fore, even after almost 20 years. The wine is evolving in the right direction, but I feel it's quite hard to identify any varietal characteristics from this wine, as most of them are quite overwhelmed by the woody notes. I could identify the wine as a Nebbiolo, but it was mainly due to its rather translucent appearance, high acidity and ample tannins; not because of the aromatics. This is a pretty serious and structure-driven effort for a modernist Barbaresco, but stylistically not really my cuppa.

JKoenen nailed it in his 18/9/2023 note. Cork came out as if it had been bottled a year ago. Just wonderful with lots of stuffing and cherryfruit. Will go on for a few more years. Great without being too heavy.

Disembarking and Liberating Paris once again from Fear & Hypocrisy; 1/4/2024-1/6/2024 (Paris - France): Cornucopia of red and black berries on the nose. Definitely modern and explosive. The palate is more gastronomic with balance between a delicate texture and a good acidity.

Cornucopia de bayas rojas y negras en nariz. Sin dudas moderna y explosiva. Al paladar es más gastronómica con equilibrio entre una textura delicada y una buena acidez.

Bought the wine on the property in 2018.
Last bottle of that purchase.
Happy to have kept it that time.
Was still needed to be decanted, tannins still strong and a balanced acidity. Could still fare few years, but good to drink now.

Overall, happy from the wine from there and would buy them again.

Very much alive after an hour decant. Definitely give this some air if you have one. Upon PnP it tasted slightly over the hill (but even then quite drinkable).

After the hour, we were rewarded with dirt/earth, dried porcini mushroom, dark plums, bacon grease, dust, black pepper and tarragon on the nose. Pretty tertiary smelling; but beautifully so with a high intensity of aromas. The palate is quite different from the nose. It tastes younger, showing acai fruit, dark plums, red cherries and tobacco. The tobacco is especially domimant in a great way. It finishes with tarragon and orange peel; with the finish lasting almost a minute.

Medium bodied with medium acid and grippy medium tannin that have really stood the test of time. I love the long finish too. This is beautiful right now. At peak.

👃 Anis, Leather, creamy cola, sour red fruits, juniper
👅 All of the above found on the tongue, high alcohol burn, med+ acidity, light body, hints of chocolate, after taste turns into raisins and goes on for a long while.
Having a hard time deciphering how especially this one is different from a Barolo but really it's probably more fruit, slightly lower acidity and less floral.
Even though it's lacking strong superlatives I find this to be a really good balance wine.

This went through a couple of phases; After 4 hours slow-ox this was very expressive, but became more subdued after an hour or so. On day 2 in between the two. Medium+ intensity with deep cherries, earth, floral notes. Quite a bit of extraction, on the verge of too much. Medium+ acidity, high (sandy, not yet integrated) tannins, medium+ finish. 91+

One more bottle to see how this has developed in 3-5 years

A lighter, elegant wine but still with the rip-roaring tannins Nebbiolo is known for. Cherry, leather, anise and potting soil. Begging to be paired with rich and fattier foods

I had higher hopes for this wine as I’ve enjoyed other vintages many times in the past (from 05-‘16). This was a maraschino cherry bomb with drying tannins. Nothing more. Followed it for 2 hours post the pop n pour and the tannins became more dry but neither the body nor palate evolved appreciably.

Italian odds and sods (N&J's place, Canberra): From Coravin. Polished oak lends vanilla, caramel, coconut, floral top notes especially rose, muted cranberry. Medium plus intensity acidity, more cranberry fruit here. 18 years old and really not that tertiary. Not for me with all that oak though.

This is a wonderful Barbaresco, in its prime!
There's good stuffing, lovely acidity, restrained power and ripe tannines. All about balance.
CHerryfruit, dusty spices and herbs, flowers and sandalwood, hints of ink/tar.

In my cellar since release, decanted and tasted over several hours. Nearly opaque garnet color. Nose has some classic modern Barolo notes of tar, roses, leather, black cherry, spice, etc. Palate has bright acidity but tannins are softened and almost gone. Many of the more obtrusive new oak (barrique) notes of the wine in its youth have “fallen out”. There is a nice texture through the first few hours but it does get s bit more acidic and slightly bitter after 4-5 hours. Moderately long finish.
