Not impressed. Completely closed down and devoid of interesting characteristics.

Hazelnuts and cream on the nose; rich buttery palate - this is fine but a bit straightforward and lacking in complexity.

Light and a bit rustic on the nose, not bad; a bit dilute, chunky tannins. Could turn out well?

Hairy Crab Night 2014 (Capital Restaurant, New Bridge Road, Singapore): I did not quite know what to make out of this wine. If I could put it this way, it was very “Potel” – well-made enough, drinkable enough, clearly showing 1er Cru quality, but somehow a bit pedestrian, as if the wine was somewhat less than the sum of its parts. The nose had a lot of earthy, savoury aromas of sous bois and umami chicken stock playing against a dark fruited background, with a little drift of dark flowers floating alongside. The mid-weight palate had a decent depth of black-fruit flavours held in slightly powdery tannins and good enough balance, with earthier, spicier notes then coming in at the finish. This had the sinewy, muscular feel that one would expect on an NSG, but I also thought it seemed to be rather on the rustic side. It lacked a bit of clarity, missing the transparency of flavours that I look for in great Burgundy and actually coming across a bit murky. Overall, decently good, but uninspiring. About time to start drinking as well.

Hairy Crab Night 2014 (Capital Restaurant, New Bridge Road, Singapore): Decently good, if not quite the style of white Burg that I like. This was rich and oakey on the nose, with lots of buttery accents and honeyed aromas wafting about dried earth notes and slightly oxidative scents of kumquat skins and Salak (aka snake-skin) fruit. With time, some floral notes started coming out as well. The palate was creamy and toasty, with sweet white fruit and nutty flavours at the fore, along with a lick of smoky, toasty mineral at the finish. Like the nose, some time and air allowed more floral components to show after awhile. It was all just a bit too toasty and in-your-face for my tastes, although some others may like this particular expression of Chardonnay. Good thing that the wine showed some quality in the way it came together, with a good bit of bright, lemony acidity cutting through all its flavours and giving it a sense of clean balance throughout. In spite of not rocking my world, this was actually a pretty decent wine that was drinking quite readily on the night. Not sure it will improve much, so drink up.

Fading. Turning to brown sugar and black tea. Opened for an hour, then declining. Good, nothing more, though there were glimmers of its former self, with nice black cherries, lots of complex sous bois and earth, and decent balancing acidity and length.

Still pretty tight and grippy. Nice right looking scarlet colour reflected in clean redder fruit profile with a bit of a classic gevrey meaty/gamey profile too. Shut down pretty tight on the mid palate though.

I was surprised to read the other reviews. Though not complex, this was a very enjoyable wine, with medium fruit and soft tannins. A good value, in my opinion.

Disappointing - hardly any fruit left. I doubt it is in a dumb phase. Will just bury the last bottle and hope age helps - but I have my doubts.

Clos St. Denis Grand Cru Pinot Noir more

Morey-St Denis Grand Cru Dinner (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck, Paragon): Pretty nice. This was better than the other negociant bottling – a 2002 Girardin Clos de la Roche – that was on the same flight. It started out a bit grumpy on the nose - all meat and earth and indistinct fruit. With time though, it opened up beautifully with notes of sweet cherries and red berries, then flowers and powdered spice, all wed to the more savoury, meaty notes that I first picked up. Very attractive. Unusually for a Clos St Denis, this had a rather masculine feel at first, showing tight little notes of dark fruit, earth and slightly herbal notes. Like the nose though, the palate also opened up nicely with time, showing clear notes of red cherries and darker berries lined with a bit of fruit peel. The Cantonese might say "kum kum". There was a nice sense of sinewy structure that gave the wine a good focus and precision as it moved beyond the midpalate and into a long finish, where darker fruit notes were met with a little dusting of dried herb and flowers. Nice. It probably needs a little more time though. Try again in 2017-2018.

A bright colour, quite youthful with just a touch of brown; a fragrant, perfumed nose with a hint of violets; ripe, fresh, raspberry and cherry fruit on the palate, with a soft, velvety texture; quite rich and with good length. Still a little tannin on the finish, but this is drinking well now.

Tasted at an Allen Meadows event. With twelve years under the belt, the the colour is showing deeper rusty red colour. When you bring the gem to the nose, you will see the complexity of the wine, with spices like peppers, earth-tone, minerals, and a hint of perfume. Once you taste the wine, the nose follows through to the taste, with added blackberries, cigar/tabacco, herbal tea, chocolate and coffee. The wine is quite tannic, likely from the high percentage of stems used by Nicolas Potel. There are certainly still potential to age and I do like the style of the wine.

Melvyn's 50th Birthday Bash (Hua Ting, Orchard Hotel): Last of the whites – this was running a bit tired, but was still very enjoyable. There was a lovely nose on its, with sweet scents of white musk and ripe apples, white flowers and a whiff of butter pastry and sweet cream, all laced with a little dusting of chalk. The palate was rather less engaging unfortunately, with a spark of almost over-bright acidity and citrus lemony notes running through white fruited flavours on a chalky mineral base. There was still a lot of tensile strength to the wine and a nice finish with a little lick of spice that had surprising length to it, but this was clearly thinning out a little compared to 1989 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charle that came just before it. Overall though, an enjoyable wine with lots of character.

Exactly what you'd expect from a $35 bottle, perhaps a little more. A good effort in this vintage and price tier, this is most certainly at peak right now. Feminine and floral as some have already said, this worked well with pork cutlets and arugula salad. Medium-bodied with ample acids. Time to drink up, not getting any better. 13,0% abv.

Served non-blind.

Consumed over ~2 hours at room temp. Basic impressions were of lemony citrus notes with a little bitterness and something just slightly musky or nutty. Decent acidity. At the price point, a fine basic all-around chard for near-term drinking.
