2016 Oddero Barolo Rocche di Castiglione

Nebbiolo more

5/24/2020 - Robmcl920 Likes this wine: 94 points

The Rocche showed a dark, deep nose with licorice, violets, menthol, and a hint of dark red fruit. On the palate, the wine was similarly dark and showed a savory expression of dark red to black fruit, tar, licorice, and a bit of balsamic at the back end. The impression on the nose and palate is a dark, muscular wine emphasizing the savorier elements more than most Barolo of this age. The wine has a very classic feel to it on the palate, with clear structure and ending with a wall of tannin. Acidity is fairly high and there is a nice sweetness to the wine on the palate, despite the more savory nature of the flavor profile.

The '16 Rocche has the makings for a very good, dark Barolo, but is less accessible than most wines I've tried from the vintage and will benefit from plenty of time in the cellar.

Black truffles, red & black fruits with softer tannins, lower acid & some interplay of dried fruits & herbs. A nice wine but nothing to write home about. Drink now.

This one really wow'ed me. Opened and decanted for 2 hours. Next to the big cabernet I had just finished, the pale color of the Oddero had me expecting the worst. But was I wrong, this was a big wine with great flavor depth. I only wished I had more. (WS #62 of 2015, best from 2018 to 2030)

good acid, tannins softer than expected, noticeable fruit increasing with each additional glass. Left over night and tasted the next day. A much more approachable wine, very pleasant, more fruit evident, less astringent.I very much like this as a young 2013 wine but will let the rest of my bottles evolve for at least 2 years before tasting again.

Bright garnet in the glass. Young and tight, even after being in the decanter for 3-4 hours. Structured and elegant nose with high-toned cherries and blue berries together with floral and savoury notes. Young and fruit forward, but balanced and made more interesting by the savoury/leather notes. Balanced and structured in the mouth, though with grippy and slightly rough tannins and a hint of wood. Medium long finish, but seems slightly hollow on the middle palate. Long long life ahead of it, and looks like I’ll have to wait 2-3 years before the next bottle.

13,5% alcohol.

Still relatively opaque black cherry color with a developed mahogany hue. Attractive, somewhat developed and slightly earthy nose that reminds me of aged Nebbiolo. Aromas of wizened, slightly raisiny fruit, some earthy spices, a little bit of bloody meat, light sweeter notes of ripe black cherries, a sanguine hint of iron and a touch of old leather. The wine is firm, sinewy and quite acid-driven on the palate with a medium body and developed flavors of wizened cranberries and crowberries, some raisiny tones, a little bit of earthy spice, light gamey tones, a hint of sour cherry bitterness, a touch of rusted iron and lifted nuance of mint. The fruit seems to be peaking now, but the structure is still remarkably tightly-knit with the high acidity and still quite assertive and relatively grippy tannins. The finish is dry, wonderfully crunchy and quite tannic with complex, developed flavors of raisiny dark fruits, some sour cherry bitterness, a little bit of leather, light crowberry tones, a hint of gamey umami and a sanguine touch of iron.

A very lovely and wonderfully developed Freisa that is peaking now. Aromatically there are lots of similarities to an aged Barolo. The overall feel is beautifully matured, yet still remarkably stern and structure-driven at the same time. It's quite rare an opportunity to taste a Freisa at its peak, since these wines tend to be drunk in their youth, before they get to show their best. Structurally this wine could age many years - perhaps even decades - more, but I doubt the fruit will hold that long. Probably best to drink now or in the next handful of years. Outrageous value at 15€.

Med Ruby w/ purplish highlights

Med intensity aromas of red berries, tart cherries, strawberries. detect slight cream. crushed rock.

On the palate, it's dry, hi acid, very integrated hi alcohol (it's 14.5% but i thought it was more like 13% and not noticeable) and the tannins were med (-), smooth and unobtrusive. It has med body and shows med + intensity flavors of sour cherry, cooked cherry (i.e., cherry compote), raspberry, cranberry. with a slight pepperyness. It took on more weight after an hour and became sweeter and showed plumbs.

Overall, i liked this wine a lot and would give it a VG rating. It's fresh, lifted, bright, but not candied like some bojos and dolcettos. It also showed a bit of complexity which i think comes from a gentle oxidation due to elevage in large wooden casks. Would definitely buy more.

I don't see the point of buying an `expensive' Langhe Nebbiolo (this one was nearly $25). If you crave Nebbiolo, for about $5 more you get a Produttori del Barbaresco "Normale", which is vastly superior. And if it doesn't have to be Nebbiolo, for about $5 less. you can find a vastly superior Chianti, or plenty of other superior wines.

1974 Oddero Barolo Brunate

Nebbiolo more

5/7/2020 - GrapeScott wrote: 92 points

First CT note on this wine. Seems to be a bit of an oddity because from what I've read, Oddero only started regularly bottling a separate Brunate around 2005. However, I picked these up recently at auction in a mixed lot of both normale and Brunate and there are clearly different labels for the two wines. The normale has "Barolo" written in horizontal print on the label while the Brunate has "Barolo" in diagonal print with a small designation of "Vigneto Brunate" in the lower lefthand side of the label. This particular lot was supposed to be 9 normale and 1 Brunate, but ended up being the converse, so lucky me. Decided to Vinturi a glass tonight in commemoration of a zoom meeting with my college crew of fellow '74s. This bottle had the lowest fill of the lot, but still excellent at ~2.5cm. Pours a tawny ruby with really no signs of bricking. Not giving much on the nose, with tobacco, bay leaf and violets. Not a ton of fruit and still showing surprising firm tannins, but drinking extraordinarily well right now. Cranberry, cigar leaf, and herbal notes, with a long sour cherry finish. This is the oldest Nebbiolo based wine I've tried by about 20 years, but quite honestly, blind I would have guessed it to be half its age. Stunningly youthful, and seems to be in no danger of decline as it was still improving at the last sip.

2/2. Garnet color with bricking edges. Tight nose that shows a little dark and dark red fruits, earth, fennel, and dried spice drawer. Medium body, acid, and finish, with pretty integrated tannins, and flavors of dark and dark red fruits, licorice, orange peel, and black tea. These haven't been my favorite Barolos or even offerings from this producer. I don't see this improving from here and would probably drink up if I had any more. Not a bad pizza/pasta wine, but not for a special meal. 87-88

This wine had some weird bitterness, possibly stemminess, in 2013. In 2015 it was excellent (91pts) with 3 hours decant. In 2017 it still had some structure and nice semi-complex fruit. Now, at 21 years of age it is still a nice wine after 30min of air, but it's less complex, less structured, and has less overall fruit. More one-dimensional old-Barolo flavors. Still not a bad thing.

Wine in the time of Corona Virus - Quarantining in NYC & NH; 3/7/2020-9/1/2020 (NYC/NH): Purchased this from Chambers St. about 8 months ago - decided to pop this open for a weekly zoom on-line/off-line with friends. Decanted for about 4 hours prior to serving. Minimal sediment, clean cork. This was drinking exceptionally well. Nose of dried cherries and florals. On the palate fully mature with dried cherry, resolved tannins, earthy complexity nice finish. Really enjoyable to share (at least virtually) with friends.

Part of a pretend vertical as some friends of ours were opening the 1974 for our online/offline and we thought it would be fun to try this. Opened prob 4-5 hours before pouring which is the way it works with old barolo. Requires a long decant. This was in a nice standard old barolo space. It's leather and slightly herbal and drinking pretty well. Fruit all faded.

The nose is like xmas on top of fresh berries. Kaleidoscopic, pixelated, soaring, its aromas give and give. Fresh, airy, floral, fruity, spicy, it is so easy to listen to. Pretty firm, classical Barolo for sure: long, tart, spicy, floral, with fine tannins drying the palate. It's Oddero, I love it, but the grip and tension might not be for everyone.

The grapes are sourced from a 2-hectare vineyard in La Morra averaging 15 years in age. Macerated for 15 days with the skins. Aged for a year in botti casks of different sizes. 14,5% alcohol.

Very pale, luminous and fully translucent raspberry red color. Ripe but also surprisingly brooding nose with relatively little fruit; instead there are delicate aromas of gamey meat, juicy raspberries, some gravelly minerality, light smoky notes of tar, light floral tones and a hint of blood. The wine is dead-serious, moderately full-bodied and quite muscular on the palate with dry and rather robust flavors of gravelly minerality, some sour cherries, a little bit of crunchy redcurrants, light umami notes of bloody meat, a tart hint of lingonberry and a touch of tar. The wine is quite tightly-knit with its medium-to-moderately high acidity and rather grippy medium-plus tannins. The finish is dry, grippy and quite robust with long flavors of crunchy cranberries and astringent lingonberries, some sour cherry bitterness, light gravelly mineral tones, a little bit of smoke and tar, a hint of raw meat and a touch of savory wood spice. The high alcohol makes the wine end on a somewhat warm note.

A robust, sinewy and dead-serious Langhe Nebbiolo from the more impressive end of the spectrum, coming across as more of a baby Barolo than a leftover Nebbiolo. Firmly structured with very dry overall character that does not really emphasize fruit as much as it does the savory non-fruit tones. It is not particularly complex this young and the alcohol is a bit on the high side, but its unapologetic, robust character feels very attractive to me and it definitely shows good potential for future development, so hopefully this'll become something even better with age.

Balsamic and tar aromas jumped out of the glass on PnP, yet faded a bit when I circled back around after a 2 hour decant. On the palate, I found dried cherry, mint, and tobacco wrapped in a somewhat coarse tannin frame. Pretty good now, although it could have used a better food pairing (drank with some chunks of Parmigiano, which I find needs a red with more generous fruit than Nebbiolo provides).
