2009 Olivier Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champs Canet

Bright lemon yellow. Discreet to medium intensive nose of citrus, ripe yellow fruit and fresh hazelnut, some butter notes. Medium bodied with some grip and tension, rather understated attack with round, ripe flavours, but then good intensity, developing excellent length with lingering mineral finish. Overall needed some time to develop, more open on day two, but quite good.

20% new oak. This one is fun! Smoky nose, very rich. Palate is bursts and tart, with layers of popcorn and more smoke. I'm a big fan!

Pale straw in colour. Clean fresh citrus and lime bouquet. Palate is fresh, profoundly lemony with pronounced crisp acidity and a long clean aftertaste. Not much complexity at the moment but should age well.

Elegant but intense nose. Palate is very Burgundian. Lovely fruit, nut and some spice combination all nicely intergrated. Medium length. Will it get better with age?? Not sure. It's pretty good now.

A lot of development here but no signs of oxidation. Butter from the oak, chalky mineral notes and fresh, tropical fruit. The acidity is still lively. Complex and well-tasting on it's own or matched with cod and bacon.

12.5% abv. This is a mellow-drinking, light-bodied wine. If any red Burgundy can be said to be an everyday drinker, this one might fall into that category.

Such a nice benchmark and representative chassagne. everything in place. Medium bodied. slight acidiTic bite. Minerals and lemon and apples. I could drink this every day and never complain. I had this wine at the winery a year ago and noted how excellent it was and not even a premier cru.

We joined the Winemaker's Tour, which included a walk through several vineyards in Puligny-Montrachet followed by a visit to the winery and lunch at Le Maison Olivier Leflaive. We tasted this wine during a most excellent and very liquid lunch. OMYG, which means Oh My Yummy God. This is off the hook outstanding and will be for another decade or so. Throw down on this one, baby, it is a wine for the ages.

Colour: light red with blue nuances
Nose: young, with red and blue berries, sandalwood and a with a touch of flowers.
Palate: slender and sleek, with fresh, red berries and with a good length. Will probably improve with a short term cellaring. The best vintage I've had of this wine (well, to be honest I've only tried two previous vintages). Will buy more. Very good!

(Blind tasting)
Medium-intensity, elegant and nuanced nose. Yellow orchard fruit, fresh citrus spine, apple and melon. Hints of gravelly minerals. Very gently oaky.
Medium-fullish palate with good intensity. Razor-sharp acid backbone. Good lenght. Very close-knit. Actually quite magic fruit. Very elegantly balanced between fruit, oak and minerals.
Surprisingly good Burg. Garenne is a high altitude vineyard and the elegant character of the wine was very interesting to compare with 2009 Dom Leflaive 1er Clavoillon, with its warmer vintage and it's lower positioned vineyard.

We visited Maison Olivier Puligny-Montrachet last year. Small, beautiful property with adorable rooms, friendly staff and a wonderful location nestled in the vineyards of Puligny. The wine tour with a winemaker is a MUST. Try to get "Froggy", who is young, speaks English extremely well, knowledgeable and full-on fun!!! Lime greenish yellow, sightly nutty, good minerally and a bit of toast. Rich, intense, touch of oak (18 months in barrels) on the palate with a fresh, fairly long finish. A winner!!!
