2020 Papapietro Perry Pinot Noir Mukaida Vineyard

Russian River Valley more

3/18/2024 - air guitar & pinot noir Likes this wine: 93 points

Maybe the best of these that I have enjoyed to date. Lovely red cherry core with a silky, smooth delivery. Bright red fruit with medium weight that presents an elegant wine. Balanced and integrated and drinking beautifully at this point. Plenty of road ahead as well. This one does demonstrate a premium experience compared to their normal line-up, but still not light years better.

2006 Papapietro Perry Zinfandel Pauline's Vineyard

Dry Creek Valley more

Popped and poured. The 2006 “Pauline’s Vineyard” pours a garnet color with a near opaque core and a watery rim. Medium+ viscosity with no obvious staining and some sediment clinging to the glass. On the nose, the wine is vinous with notes of desiccated cherry, blackberries, fig, old leather, tobacco, damp earth, mushrooms, teriyaki, black pepper, woody notes, along with some caramelized baking spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannins and medium acid. The structure is very well integrated at this point. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+; rich and leathery. Drink now.

Light crimson in color. 14.6% ABV. From Pauline’s Vineyard and Timber Crest Farms. Pretty nose of red fruits, baking spices and earth. Light to medium body with exquisite acidity. Elegant, Claret style Zinfandel. Cherry, strawberry, plum and pepper on the palate. The finish is long and supple. Delicious Zinfandel and one of the best Dry Creek Zins in recent memory. Traditional nose. Plum-cherry-spice flavors fading but hold on in an understated core. It doesn't offer as much as it once did, but it remains smooth and drinkable.

2018 Papapietro Perry Pinot Noir Leras Family Vineyards

Enjoyable wine.
Compared to the 2018 Pommard Clones (Papapietro) I drank the night before, I thought this Leras wasn't as balanced and a little too strong with cherry/cola flavors. With that said, I bought a case of 2018 Leras on sale for $36/bottle so, for the cost, I am happy.

Appearance of wine was med garnet, showing signs of bottle age.
Developing wine with med aromas of cherry, strawberry, cola, cedar, earth, baking spices, and kirsch.
Dry wine, med- tannins, high acidity, high alcohol, med body, med+ flavor intensity, med+ finish. Very good wine. Can drink now but suitable for further aging.

I'm curious how much longer these 2018 bottles can age with the acidity and alcohol both still high as well as plenty of primary fruit flavors still present.

Always enjoy this Pinot that highlights this clonal variety. Deep red fruits that have a distinct flavor profile. Great mouthfeel and delicious on the palate. Medium acidity and great balance throughout.

Nose: Buttery toast. Taste: Initial blast of juicy red berries -- strawberry, raspberry. Followed by some subtle notes of earth, spice, and mineral. Light and pleasing. (Others have suggested a perfect pairing with salmon. I'd have to agree with this flavor profile, though alas not on the menu for us tonight.)

This one started out a bit tart and closed off. Predominant red raspberry flavors with a touch of cranberry. A bit more astringent than other Papapietro Pinots. Had a glass and went out to dinner and upon our return had smoothed out and was much more accessible. A touch of dusty cherry at that point. I would advise holding this longer or definitely decanting at this point in time.

This Mukaida lived up to its billing. Great balance and flavor on a medium frame. Dark cherry notes and expressive without being overbearing or extracted. Very harmonious and balanced throughout. Not the best QPR, but this is probably the most enjoyable vintage of this I have tasted.

Bright cherry blast upfront, but the fruit is pretty thin and weak at this stage. The finish is sharply tart, at least shortly after opening.
