2010 Passopisciaro Sicilia Passopisciaro

Nerello Mascalese more

My love affair continues with my 8th btl from this vintage. I rarely buy more than 4 btls of any wine. After trying several of the more gritty producer, Terre Nere's Mt Etna Rosso I was about to give up on Mt Etna Rosso then, I found this wine. PnP in a Burg glass. Blind it would be hard to peg this as Burgundy or Barbaresco. Kind of a mythical blend of the two. A little more tannin and iron than most Burgs but all of the grace and aromatics of a Chambolle. Pomegranate freshness and berry juiciness combined with a solid bead of minerality. For me, this is the king of Mt Etna Rosso and a total bargain for around $28-$32. I'd love to see this wine in a blind line up with either Burgs or Barabesco. 92+

stunning and impressive Nerello Mascalese from an A-class winemaker. Opulent nose and taste with tons of ripe red fruit basically strawberries and cherries and plums mixed with a smoky hint and some balanced oak in the background. Impressive alcool at 15° that you do not taste. Very tasty. Still youthful but well in the drinking window. May only improve with age.

one hour plus decant, started with crunch red fruit and added to this an element of softer darker almost suet texture and flavor, smokey maybe. Enjoy this element.

Light red - shy nose. Light bodied, far from dilute but closed at the moment - hefty but smooth tannins that creep up on you. This wine does not currently have the charm of youth or the complexity of age - leave in the cellar for a couple more years before trying the next bottle.

The Porcaria was the richest and lush of the three (Rampante & Guardiola) but still vibrant and beautifully defined.

Rampante being star of the flight of the three (Guardiola & Porcaria). Probably the most complete and aromatic of the three with sexy dark cherry flavors and a long, vibrant finish.

Maturing nicely, the crunchy acidity has given way to a softer dark fruit quality, good length and balance. By no means past its best but not sure it will improve further

Mine. Poor recent CT notes made me nervous about this bottle, but it was in fact outstanding. Both nebbiolo-ish and Burgundian, vivid flavors, long finish. Drinks perfectly on opening, and further cellaring should yield even more benefits.

Super assertive red fruit. Floral. Higher score possible if this chills out, which I hope and expect.

Drinking well now - still reminds me of a cross between a Cali pinot noir and barolo.
Dried cherry flavors, floral, chocolate, a touch rustic, with dusty tannins.
Well balanced, and not too acidic.
Simply a pleasure to drink!

Popped and poured. Brownish ruby colour. Great open nose of red berry, licorice, herbs, smoke, tar, and sauerkaut. Heavy influence of smoky minerals from volcanic terrior. Intense super high acidity at attack with presence of firm muscular tannin. Some good red berry and cherry aftertaste. Drink like nebbiolo. Quite rustic. Not many people like this style but good for Italian nebbiolo fans.

Medium to dark ruby color. The description of crunchy red fruits from the other tasting notes is a good one. Very rustic with a nice mix of dark red fruit, minerality and earth. Medium+ acid and tannin. Definitely a terroir driven wine and better with food than on its own.

Nice, inviting aromatics. Red fruited palate with blood orange notes. Good purity, and although the wine is dark, it is light on its feet and not heavy. My father, who never drinks red wine because he finds all reds too dry, enjoyed an entire glass. However, this seemed to lose its thrust by the last glass. Still, enjoyable. Birthday dinner at Market 17 in Fort Lauderdale.

Very pale color, with a bricky orange shade. Light bodied with red fruits and a menthol edge. I didn't get the volcanic mineral notes I remember before. Good acid. Ann didn't like this much at first but it grew on her. A nice change of pace.

Wine was decanted, and tasted/consumed over the next four hours and finished the following evening. Aromatically the wine was pleasant enough with high toned red fruits, a strong mineral component and a touch of flowers. The palate lacked any real depth and was driven by the acidity. The wine showed slight improvement, and was decent, but not worth the $40 I paid. There are better etna rosso/nerello mascalese for less money.

Cork was almost soaked through. Decanted off the sediment in the morning then recorked and opened at night. This wine felt just in the right place right now, lots of lovely fruit, acidity and a little development, absolutely delicious.

from mag. with a couple hr decant and drunk over 2 more hours; alc at 15% which didn't show as a problem but the wine is darker than other lighter alc vintages, nice crunchy red/black fruit, vibrant w/ good acidity, some tannins remain on the finish which seem to add a earthy element. I like a lot but prefer the ligher alc vintages.
