2012 Passopisciaro Sicilia Contrada Chiappemacine

Light red. Tar and cherry in the nose. Kind of plain. Not the haunting beautiful wine the 05 was.

Unique but young - needs a few years or about 2 hours in a decanter.

Color started pretty vivid cherry red, but tended toward ruby after two hours.

Odd on the palate at first, with flavor profiles fighting with each other. After an hour, it got better. After two, it pulled together into a superb, fruity, still slightly tannic medium-bodied wine that paired wonderfully with pasta amatriciana.

I quite enjoyed this wine this time around. My memory of the first bottle was a more harsh acid front end and some harshness on the finish. This time things seemed more integrated with the wine smoothing out. The acid and fruit became one, and the harshness has disappeared. The nerello mascalese has made a renewed fan, and I find that some additional bottle time can really help this grape. The wine complemented the food on the second night, but I will admit it had trouble working with the spicy Chinese food tried on the first night.

Clear, medium ruby with legs.
Clean, med. intense aromas of cooked red fruits, orange efervescent and carob. Youthful.
Dry, med(+) acidity, tannin & alcohol. Med. body. Med. intensity flavors of red fruits. Med. finish.
Very good wine.
Drink now, but had potential to age further.

Bright acid. The red fruit is fresh and vibrant. There is a touch of sweet spice, menthol and minerality that carries through. This is really lip smacking and delicious with good concentration.

This opened up flat and tasteless, but after an hour... NICE!
My first taste of this varietal, and it reminded me of a pinot noir but with more body/structure.
Smooth and elegant, with additional herbal aromas on top of the slight berry.

VinItaly Day 2 (Verona, Italy): 70% Petite Verdot, 30% Cesanese d'Affile; 1,000m; darker color, high extraction, bright rim; sexy nose, floral, mix of red and dark berry, luxurious; silky tannin for grape, deep, vegetal, Bordeaux-esque, the 15.5% is not noticeable, polished and luxurious; wow.

Two very nice and consistent magnums on the night. No decanting and we didn't feel it needed it.
Albeit a medium wine on the palate this was quite intense, darkish, smoky side and very interesting. Cherries across. Light on the tannin side and could use some more depth but an overall very good wine. A proper 90 but nothing more. Drink from now.

Bought after hearing all the comparisons to Chambolle, which turn out to be apt only as it relates to the smooth texture of this wine. Otherwise, this wine is much more savory than Chambolle of similar age. Likeable but not sure if I will rush to buy more at the $38 price level.

La Pergola, Rome. Nerelio Mascalese grapes. Near Mt Etna. 130 year old vines planted sporadically near the actual lava flows. A seriously nice, soft taninic red with Pinot Noir elements and a relatively short finish. Lacks roundness and sophistication of a red Burgundy, but reminiscent nevertheless. Mediterranean terroir, but Burgundy balance and creaminess. No history of old vintages as only 2,000 bottles per year. Definitely can lay down for 10+ years. Everything from A to Z done by hand. No sulfites, filtering or anything modern. Wow!!! Served in a red Burgundy glass that is much smaller than the white glass.

Strawberry, raspberry, red currants on the nose. Very light colour, light body, light tannin, very fragrant, floral. Medium complexity. Such a strong mineral core, but has a feathery fealing about it. Will surely improve even further. (91+)

Lovely mineralogy. Nice tannin grip. Good fruits (red). Light in colour and more power than it looks. Alcohol not in evidence. Really interesting
