Color is dark and a bit cloudy, consistent for a wine of this vintage. nose and taste of dark fruit and tar. a pleasant wine. I am glad i drank this bottle now. I still have a 2004 and 2005. We will see how that goes.

dense, dark colour…rich, dense, black fruit, vanilla, cheesy, spice, cedar, chocolate…juicy, beautifully balanced, preposterously long, cream, concentrated without being jammy, very good but a bit expensive at $695 a bottle.

Pretty much the same as previous notes. Think this will continue to improve and develop greater complexity in a few more years.

Full bodied, but lacking the complexity and finishing was short. Decent wine for the price.

7 months later, this wine is exactly the same. For the price, you cannot go wrong. Dark red-purple in the glass. Wafting cassis aromas with a touch of nice vanilla oak. Decant this for maximum enjoyment. Fruit forward. Delicious.

2nd bottle in six months. The first was supplied by my friend Doug and seemed tired. This is anything but. 40 minutes in the harshness of the tannins has receded and even the though the fruit is a bit attenuated, its got beautiful earthy and kirsch cherry notes on the nose. The palette is full of rich red berry (raspberry maybe) and a touch of spice. The aftertaste while not long is very nicely balanced and fades without leaving an harsh afterburn! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbOZccv9ym8

From magnum. Still tannic but lovely fruit and coffee flavours made it a great bottle with the grilled sea bass. I will wait another 5 years for the next bottle.

A nice Shiraz. Dark deep purple in color. Flavors range from blackberry, currant, spice, earth, and chocolate. The finish lasts forever. I waited several years to open this and it was well worth the wait and is ready to be enjoyed now, yet it has many more years left to age.

This seems to be entering a reasonable drinking window now but still has room to improve. Pretty well integrated and balanced with nice length, punchy black fruit and crunchy tannins. It will improve with a few more years but quite enjoyed where it is now.

From Penfolds

“Traditional Barossa varietals bask in the halo of the terrific 2012 vintage.”
“The 21st release of this Penfolds Barossa Valley blend – unshakably true
to its region/varietal-mix/style.”
PETER GAGO
PENFOLDS CHIEF WINEMAKER

OVERVIEW The Barossa Valley was planted extensively with Shiraz, Mataro and Grenache
by the early settlers. In the 1950s Penfolds started experimenting with table wine
blends of Shiraz and the robust grape variety Mourvèdre (Mataro). In response
to a growing international market for the highly perfumed wines of the Southern
Rhone, Penfolds introduced the 1992 vintage of the Old Vine Barossa Valley Shiraz
Grenache Mourvèdre. The wine was elevated to the Bin range with the 1998
Bin 138. Sourced from old, low-yielding Barossa Valley vines, this is one of the few
wines that remains in component form during older, oak maturation and is blended
just prior to bottling.

GRAPE VARIETY 66% Shiraz 23% Grenache 11% Mataro
VINEYARD REGION Barossa Valley
WINE ANALYSIS Alc/Vol: 14.5%, Acidity: 6.2 g/L, pH: 3.62
MATURATION 12 months in seasoned American oak hogsheads
VINTAGE CONDITIONS A vintage of slightly cooler temperatures with only one significant heat event over
the New Year period. Prior to budburst, winter rainfall was lower than the long-term
average for most parts of the Barossa Valley. Variable conditions continued through
the period from October to December, merging to a mild summer, with a few short
periods of heat. The mild daytime temperatures and cool evenings across most of
the ripening period allowed for impressive flavour development, without inflated
baumes. Balanced canopies matched fruit load providing even, yet not too speedy,
ripening. Smaller berry and bunch sizes were noticeable and this, coupled with
favourable weather conditions, saw great results for some quality markers
– colour, tannin profile, fruit concentration and flavour depth.

COLOUR Dense magenta
NOSE In no way bashful, aromatics need little encouragement to leap from glass
– with or without a swirl!
Savoury, and dare one say, Rhônish. Cold meats, pan jus, cinnamon.
Only 23% Grenache?! Would never have guessed…!
All the reds: raspberry, red liquorice, dark red berried-fruits, red jelly-bean aromas.
PALATE Medium to full-bodied.
Substantial… structurally verging on lush/viscous during this youthful
developmental phase.
Yet to completely unfurl – a suggestion of kirsch, maraschino… fruitcake mix.
White chocolate and mocha flavours/‘powderiness’ confusingly merge with
softened rounded tannins.

Sooo disappointed with St.Henry lately. Very similar to my experience with the 2004...well made but not impressive at all. I guess I'll keep my other bottles for another 10 years and maybe I'll appreciate it. rich, deep but not well defined. An average quality wine.

The primary scent on the nose was one of sweet cassis which became dominant on the second day. To taste, the wine was full bodied, bold , powerful and super concentrated by day 3. Like the nose, the sweet cassis was the dominating flavour by the third day (which I didn't like but others may). I initially scored this 91-92 but with reflection, and following this over 3 days, scored this down to 88 (largely influenced by my preference for less subtle cassis).
