2005 Penfolds Grange

South Australia Shiraz Blend, Syrah more

2/14/2016 - shallIshantI Likes this wine: 93 points

We had a 2005 night with contributions from:
- Kanonkop, South Africa - Claret blend
- Hazell, California - Pinot Noir
- Grange, Australia - Syrah (Bin 95, Bottle 48964)
Kanonkop - gave nothing away on the nose. Plenty of fruit on the foretaste. Drink up now.
Hazell - much stronger perfumed bouquet. Longer in the mid range and continued. This is a v good wine.
Grange - lives up to the hype. Complex. Oak and vanilla. Medicinal. Fruit. Very long aftertaste. Could easily go another 5 years.
All were ready to drink. All had deep dark edges considering they are 11 years old.
Main course was a Beef Wellington, then cheeses

Escape from the Cold; 2/12/2016-2/15/2016 (Sunny & Warm Florida (Del Ray Beach, Jupiter)): Well aged Grange deserves a special place in heaven. This was drunk side by side with a '97 SQN Syrah and it was interesting to see some of the similarities (I didn't expect). Both fantastic wines. For some reason having it next to the SQN pulled out more of the meat characteristics for me. Fruit has mellowed. Still nice spices. And that Grange nose that I'd be quite happy if they made a perfume out of. Excellent.

Cork was barely soaked. Decanted 2 hours - plenty of sediment. Deep colour still, with minimal bricking at the rim. Rich and decadent nose - black fruits, chocolate, vanilla, oak. The palate is harmonious and full bodied. The tannins are well integrated. Its long, rich, well suited to steak.

Night Two of Two Big Nights in Sydney (Beachside in Bondi): Fading from what I imagine it was at peak, but still a tremendously pleasurable, mature example, with dusty tannins, restrained blue fruit and a bit of petrol.

Night One of Two Big Sydney Extravaganzas (Sydney, Australia): An exceptionally good Cab-Shiraz blend in a very happy place: mature, gracious, supple and soft, with sweet red and blue fruit and some herbaceousness that marked it an unmistakably Aussie for me.

Big and full of fruit: typical bramble and dark berry, not much oak to note.
Still fairly acidic and medium tannin, this has still plenty of years in it and I think best left for another 5

Generally love the hyland Shiraz but this vintage isn't the best. 2010 and 11 are far superior.

Certainly the drink by dates need to be updated a bit. DBD 2018.
Three levels of depth here and it did take an hour for this to start to open up. top level is that of undergrowth and truffle/mushroom followed by soft, subtle wood tones of baking spice and sweetness finished by a thicker level of blue and black fruits/berries. Smooth structure and body. Very nice wine/qpr Penfolds. Thanks.

Concentrated wine that manages to be nimble. Terrific range of flavors across the palate from floral and eucalyptus notes through layers of lightly peppered dark flesh fruits to touch of wet stone.

Did a long slow ox then in the decanter for 2+ hours. Healthy middle age, a few good years ahead.

Gorgeous wine. Intense nose. Velvety palate with black current and red to dark fruit. Thyme spice. Really opened up in the glass. Drinking nicely but no rush to drink up.

Opened this wine tonight at my parents' place for our reunion dinner.

Tight, closed and a faced a formidable wall of tannins upon opening. Dark purple in colour with a brickish-red rim.

Decanted for 3 hours and the wine opened up beautifully. Ripe plums coupled with notes of sweet cassis, black coffee, blackcurrant, blueberries and fruitcakes.

The build up is very nice: from the entry, to a solid mid-palate and wonderful long finish. A classy and well-made wine.

Remember to decant if you are drinking it soon; alternatively, leave it in the cellar for a few more years.

The best bottle of St.Henri I had in a long time. Over the years, I realized that I liked my St.Henri on the younger side. But this 10-year bottle was delicious. Showed some good complexity, the perfect mix of primary, secondary and tertiary aromas. Too bad Penfolds became greedy and significantly jacked up their prices in the past few years.

good deep purple color; nose of mint, plum, cinnamon and a wisp of oak; palate well balanced elements, not at all alcoholic, dusty but smooth tannins, good structure and grip. a slight oak lashing cost the wine a few points, but that's a matter of personal taste. All in all, quite an outstanding wine.

Removed cork with an ah-so device after reading some recent subscriber had trouble pulling his cork. Worked like a charm and the cork came out intact. Some sediment, which the server poured into the decanter when she simply upended the bottle, unfortunately, not having been trained how to decant old wine! Ahhhhhh.

Excellent, classic style from Penfolds. 14% alc.
Colour: black berry and cherry, dark chocolate
Bouquet: sweet blackberry and plum fruit, slightly antsy and jammy, leathery and earthy
Palate: as bouquet, good body, entirely fruit driven, good clean acid and long finish, peppery. Wonderful balance, depth, sophisticated.

deep crimson core with a touch of fade at the edges
Spicy nose, cedar, bit of mint
Very fine tannins but a little closed inititally with some leather on the finish
After a couple of hours the fruit reveals itself, sweet strawberries. It becomes less dense. Gets more complex the longer it's opened, notes of orange and caramel come through.
Gorgeous wine. I'd keep for at least 5 years.

Back from my travels in Myanmar (a vinous desert) and grabbed this from my cellar to see if it matched my original note from September 2015 made at a Spectator Winemaker's Dinner.
It did, but even after a 2.5hr decant clearly needs longer to develop to full potential than my original thoughts - a LOT longer. Will not touch next bottle till 2020 and expect this wine to hit 93+?+ with ease. Superb potential.
