My first good wine from Washington, and a very good one indeed. Nearly opaque crimson. A bit of a chameleon. This started out tasting like a fine mature claret, with a powerful, bass-register nose of leather and cassis. After an hour of air it evolved dramatically: the fruit shifted to an almost Zinfandel-style blueberry character and then pushed towards redcurrant, while the wine picked up some sweet fig and coffee aromas, and a lively citric bite gave it some newfound tension. Medium-plus body, with some minty notes on the palate that aren't really perceptible from the nose. Nice old-wine texture, and developed a quite persistent aftertaste after a bit of aeration. By the later stages of the evening this had become a dead ringer for an elite 1970's Cali Cab--the two wines I've had that tasted most like this were a 1974 Diamond Creek Volcanic Hill and a 1978 Joseph Phelps Eisele.

With mostly resolved tannin and healthy acid, I'd consider this to be in late-peak form: if you can find a bottle (I believe just 1,800 were made in this inaugural vintage; I got mine from Winebid), there's certainly no rush to drink it, but nor is there any reason to expect further improvement from here. I do wonder whether the winemaking here has changed significantly (as it has in so much of California) in recent decades, or whether the handful of pedigreed Washington reds I've had were all simply tried too young.

I have had older vintages of this wine and had rated them 85,89,90.
The glass I had of the 2012 had been opened for two days, so good. Smooth, rich mouth coating dark fruit. I probably made the mistake of not giving previous bottles (06,07) enough air to really strut it's self. Give them a really long decant.

This is a lovely wine - totally approachable. Big, juicy, and hugely appreciative of a long decant. I'm not waiting to drink the rest of mine.

Tried another bottle - after a long decant. My earlier scoreof 92 was way off - this deserves a substantially higher score!

As previously, an almost ageless wine, I'm convinced I'll be enjoying these in 15 years with my grandson. A touch of reduction blew off quickly, leaving loads of primary fruit, sandalwood and violets. The big structure remains, a touch of heat shows through, but this lingers endlessly and sweetly on the palate, superb with a nice steak. A nice surprise from WineBid.

Beautiful and exclusive bouquet with ripe dark forest fruits and exclusive oak and cedar. On the palate a very juicy wine with dark berries, some chocolate, earth, beautiful acidity and youthful round tannin with still a good bite. Beautiful bitterness and a great length. Still in its young maturity stage. Will be lovely until at least 2018. 94+

This is my first of the 09. It is better than the 08 and reminds me of the 07, which was great. More integrated and balanced than previous. Needs at least two hours of decanting to pull it all together. Deep dark garnet color with a floral, strawberry nose. Lots of oak here but the finely extracted fruit will balance that in a couple years. After a couple hours this became rich, luscious vanilla, mocha, plum and dark cherry. Yes it's hot when first opened, but I like that. It mellows nicely through the evening allowing the fruit to pull huge. So glad I have more of this.

Opened initially on a Wednesday, then had to cork in the cellar for 3 days and finished tonight (yes, I just corked this and did nothing else). It was still excellent on Day 4, with the essential QC notes of black fruit, mineral, cassis, and a solid backbone shining through. This was my first 2011 since the release party. I am glad to have 3 more; this should age beautifully.

Deep garnet. Nose has mellowed out a bit but still quite youthful. Hints of blueberries, cinnamon. Taste was like a 3 year old wine. Blueberries, blackberries, cinnamon. Very good, but 100 points?? Don't think so.

Cassis, black plum, menthol, oak. Integrating tannins, but loads of mellowing left to do. If you have multiple bottles, worthy of a check in. But this can sleep another 5 years easily.

Best Burger Event, Monthly Tasting Group (Jason and Tracy's, Mpls, MN): Very dark red color. Drank a 2 oz pour over 10 minutes. Showing ok for its age, some new wood, dark fruits with some hints of red fruit, spicy, firm tannins that are releasing.

Really enjoyed this wine where it is at. Ripe plum, smokey and earthy on the palate. Great integration of the fruit with just a little tannin on the end. Medium finish. Very good.

Well, call me a heretic, but this was a major disappointment, particularly since I'd had a wonderful 2002 just two days earlier. It took an hour or so to open up. Well balanced, silky smooth, complex, and rich. However, over the course of another two or three hours, it displayed an increasingly prominent and unpleasant barnyard component. After a total of three hours or so, it also seemed to be way over the hill. Hope it was bottle variation.

We had this with grilled NY strip steaks on 4/25/15. It had a very expressive bouquet of smoke, black currant, blueberry, mocha, cocoa, cedar and spice aromas. The palate was rich and ripe with flavors of black currant, black cherry, blueberry, mocha, cocoa and spice. 91+

Wow! Two years ago, I thought this had lost a little. Wrong! It is absolutely singing right now, and it shows no signs of age. Drank at a small party with a bunch of other stellar wines, so no detailed notes - except to say that it was wonderful and my WOTN. Too bad it was my last one.

A stunning wine with impeccable balance. All of the things you would expect from Quilceda: blueberry, blackberry, cassis, with secondary nuances of cedar, menthol and a touch of vanilla. Full body, but the balance is so precise that it does not come across as at all heavy. Leaning slightly more to CA than BDX, it possesses elements of both. Smooth body, very complex and a long finish. This wine exudes class. Probably at or near peak, but certainly seems able to go much longer. Extraordinary. www.advinetures.ca

Needs 45 min to open up. Great value wine. Lighter in flavor compared to their main 100 percent cab. However, very close to it with the 2011 vintage. Sweet oak off the nose. Slight cedar sent. Red current. A little heat but not what you would expect from 15.2 ach.

Color: medium deep ruby core -> medium dark ruby rim. Decanted and tasted over the course of 4+ hours, this demonstrated what I've come to think of as the 'classic' QC bouquet of blackberry liqueur, cassis and a touch of freshly ground black and white pepper. Palate showing mineral elements, along with noted blackberries, pepper and cassis (I just don't find those earthy elements others allude to). Sorry, but I guess I'm one of the naysayers out there that find this profile just isn't what I'm looking for in a Bordeaux blend. Good midpalate and acidity and a nice, long finish -- a very well made new-world Cabernet showing specific QC character -- this just isn't in my wheelhouse. Really not bad at all (though the 15.2% alc is apparent), would just rather have a nice second or third growth . . . .

Decent intensity here, layered and semi-rich. Don't think it merits the $50 price tag but a fairly opulent, moderately complex Wash. red. Yeah, not overly impressed.

There is no denying that Quilceda Creek is much more than a regional superstar when it comes to producing fine Cabernet-based wine. The Columbia Valley Red Wine is their "entry level" offering. The 2008 iteration is a blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 1% Malbec. Opaque ruby and packed with black fruit, it adds nuances of anise, loamy earth, pickling spice and dried herbs. There is significant structure here, with fresh acidity and substantial firm tannins. The wine's listed alcohol is 15.2% but remains a non-factor as long as it is served at an appropriate temperature of approximately 60-65° F. Solid in the middle and impressively long on the finish, this bruiser is still a baby. While I wouldn't hesitate to open a bottle now, I suspect that it will see some improvement with patient cellaring. I have accordingly revised my drinking window for this wine. Drink now-2025.
