Wine Spectator rated this wine 82 points...they must have had a bad bottle...this is a good wine, a bit brambly but in a nice way.

A little menthol, great purity, terrific concentration, similar to the 2006 Alpine but with more of everything.

Needed a little time to open, and just a hint of brett, but excellent.

Showing its age with some nuttiness, but not at all over the hill, with plenty of acid. Clearly California, but in a good way.

Rhys dinner: Lighter than the '07 Alpine, but still had the walnutty notes, a little flat and sour component. Seems to be past its prime, or an aberration. Clearly this is the same wine as I had in March, but giving me a much different impression today. Interesting that previously it was a Horseshoe vertical, and today it was a Rhys horizontal of the most recent vintage.

Rhys dinner: This was herbal with lightly stewed fruits and a walnutty note; higher acid, or rather a distinct sour component overshadowed this wine. Moderate plus weight. This seemed to be past its prime or at least recently took a nose dive. I tried to appreciate, but the walnuts and high sour aspect was a major distraction. This could be an aberration or the fact that we just tasted 4 fresh 2013's which were showing pretty well.

Rhys dinner: Lovely white fruits, ripe pear, yellow apple, yellow cherry; slight reductive quality and a saline/rocky minerality to this that reminds me of a Corton-Charlemagne. Nicely balanced, medium to medium plus body, good concentration of flavors, with just a kiss of French oak. Stunning chard.

Rhys dinner: mixed berries, rich cherry, red and black fruits, light herbal tones with soy notes. Sort of a conglomeration of the other Rhys Pinots (Alpine, Bearwallow, Family), complex, well-balanced, and good weight to it. Best of the bunch IMHO.

Rhys dinner: Candied strawberry, rocky minerality, juicy with ripe little red forest berries, slight sweet impression. Reminiscent of a village Volnay. Delicious and pure, if not a little simple.

Rhys dinner: Raspberry red fruits, more delicate, dried herbs, light licorice; lightest body of the 4 Rhys tasted, light tannins, seems to have fallen apart over 40 minutes, a bit innocuous. Unanimously the weakest of the bunch.

Rhys dinner: Blackberry and bramble notes with a spicy edge; intense, med. body, light dusty tannins. Most tannic of the 4 Rhys Pinots. Classic Alpine with dark fruits and a brambly note.

Tasted from .375 along with 2013 Alpine, Bearwallow and Horseshoe. Some medicinal qualities at first, but that quickly blew off and the bottle blossomed into something really nice. A fair amount of Asian spice - one of the tasters likened this to a Vosne. Certainly Burgundian in style. Second favorite of the night and best Family Farm I have had to date.

Tasted from .375 along with the 2013 Alpine, FF and Horseshoe. This seemed to be the lightest of the group. Had some hard edges. Not that enjoyable and everyone's least favorite. Note to self - do not buy when offer comes.

Lovely dark cherry color, none of the muddiness that Alan noted. Spice and herb notes, sour cherry and tart pomegranate and a touch of raspberry. Elegant mouthfeel with some finely grained tannins and a medium+ finish. Basically, I agree with everything Alan said.

Tasted alongside the '13 alpine. It was very good, but the alpine 'won' the first night. Two days later, and slow decant- this one shows (7-25) much better nose, and even more balanced palate. Not as heavy fruit front compared with the same wine on Thursday evening meal (about 1/2 of the 375 bottle left from Thursday and re-examined). Dark purple on the color (both days). It was nice, and very enjoyable, but our vote is with alphine this time. I'd let the remaining sample bottles sleep for a while

~90 (-91)for what a single point estimate is worth

Opened alongside with '13 Rhys Horseshoe for comparison. Vote of the bottle- the Alpine was finished within the meal. More enjoyable nose and palate than the horseshoe (that improved with more decanting time). Brighter red compared to the horseshoe, but still very purple. On the nose, fruits and earthy notes. I agree with the notes listed below that the palate has more spices on the alpine compared with horseshoe, but I would not say it is 'tight'. Floral nose keeps developing over the meal. Enjoyable, and worked well with our light meats, truffle pasta. Overall, a very good PN experience (and fair disclosure, not as heavy 'consumer' of PNs, though Rhys does very good work, always).
Great to have that sample, and happy I voted with the wallet and got few on release. It is built to develop well over time.
(375 samples, fwiw)

~92 or so, but the singular point is a challenge. It is 90-91 on the nose, and more on the palate, balancing after few hours.

Not the usual Alpine for me. A little too much towards the big and fruity side. Not a lot of structure. Still tasty, though.

Just outstanding at this point. Incredibly rich, well-balanced. I'm trying to avoid the California/Burgundy comparison because they are different wines, but a very good Batard would not outshine it.
