2011 Schrader Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To-Kalon Vineyard

Given the reputation of the difficult, 2011 vintage, I was not expecting a wine with this much richness, plush, ripe tannins and concentration, but that is what you get when you cull your yields down to 3/4 a ton per acre. The wine delivers a blast of sweet, black and blue fruits, licorice, espresso and chocolate covered berries in every sniff, swirl and sip.

Two friends sharing two bottles of wine: Pop and pour, my impression exactly mirrors Bob’s. Explosive cult cab nose displaying perfectly ripe blueberries, crème de cassis dominates, lead pencil, licorice, incense, very noticeable luxurious oak via vanilla, floral note that I get in young cab, chocolate covered cherry and earth. Incredible concentration, unctuous, silky and warm, opulent crème de cassis driven palate impression, perfect amount of acidity and tannin is not noticeable masked by incredibly sweet fruits. The finish is seamless and incredibly long.

This is a very cultish expression of Cab fruit and very Schrader, ie ripe and intense but quite precise in cultish way with strong presence of luxurious oak. What I love about Schrader is the fruit expression is blue vs red, e.g. Hundred Acre and other really ripe cult cabs. If you are a fan of old school Napa cab with slightly less ripeness and concentration, ie green pepper and no incense and luxurious oak via vanilla, this certainly is not the wine for you. The fact that two of us shared a bottle helps as in a big tasting setting, my impression could have easily been “too much”. Though first sip shows strong presence of oak, it settles nicely or I get used to oak and it becomes less noticeable. I prefer to pop and pour young cult cabs. If you wish for less oak and cooler/calmer overall expression, you can certainly decant for a few hours or more. This strangely brings back the memories of the wonderful hedonistic experiences of the 94 Harlan upon release. Schrader wines were hot a couple years ago but the prices have come down a bit. For my palate, Schraders represent very good value compare to other cult cabs.

Ready to go upon opening, it seems with all 2011 Schraders they had to try hard to make a good bottle, and it is only good not great. Smokey, Vanilla, cassis with good concentration but a tad thin and hollowing the middle. There is still enough going on and very enjoyable but it's not anywhere close to previous vintages.

Urban Heights - 03 Cathelin, 90 LP, 97 Rayas, 07 IX, 11 LPV & etc. (Urban Heights - Bethesda, Maryland): Already very approachable and enjoyable. Expressive nose displaying black fruits, blackberry jam, crème de cassis, vanilla, liquid smoke, licorice, lead pencil, cedar and burning incense. Appearance of excellent concentration, warm, round and silky palate, sweet cassis fruit driven palate impression, good acidity, slightly dry tannins and nice finish. It feels like a lot of technical wine making has gone into this to give the perception of volume and concentration. The middle palate is a bit hollow telling me that there isn’t as much of concentration as it appears. Nevertheless very enjoyable in very primary cult cab way.

Coravin Lesson #1: Do not access a bottle, overpressurizing it in the process, then stand that bottle up at room temp. Fortunately I drank about 60% of this bottle before it turned all porty. And by all porty, I mean ALL PORTY. Like a bad version of a Cabernet Port you probably had from some cheezy winery in a bad wine region. It's such a shame because this was a great wine, but this shows you what improper handling will do. I had planned on finishing the bottle in short order but then ended up on a restricted diet for the next several months. Now I went back to this same exact bottle from my earlier note and the wine is destroyed. It's essentially undrinkable but I'm trying to drink it as my punishment. Just so I remember what I did to that poor little wine. All those berries gave their life for me and I did them wrong. So sad. I am a bad dog. I have learned my lesson.

Young, but already showing promise. A big, boisterous, rough and tumble wine. Needs time to integrate. Caymus on steroids. I'd give it 5 years to round into shape and come into balance.

Decanted it for 3.5 hours prior to drinking. Very dark wine with a great nose. It is well balanced as it still has great fruit on the mid-palate, but definitely not a fruit bomb, and nice long finish. This wine is drinking great now, but probably still has a long life ahead of itself.

Delicious. A ton of dark fruits, well balanced, long finish. Probably still needs another couple years but absolutely no harm in drinking now. One of the best cabs we've ever had. Worth the tariff? That's a bit tougher to answer but no doubting the quality and experience.

I was a bit worried about an almost 8 year old Zinfandel made in a very bold style but it came through just fine. It was past the jammy fruit stage and had entered the mature earthy stage of its life. Not the smoothest wine but very good overall.

This is the highest achievement (perfection) of the Cabernet Sauvignon grape in Napa Valley for this year. Probably the standard. What else can I say but that I have 5 left. These are great wine values at the price point I paid $ 600/ p.

1500 Parker Points of Wines (GHT): Inky purple in color. The nose is great with black raspberries, blueberries, some pencil lead and some charred wood. On the palate, this drinks much deeper than the Bevan. While not as delicious perhaps, it has complexity and depth to it that event his young, is obvious and interesting. Great pure cassis fruit on the palate. Wonderful slippery yet full texture. Long finish. I suspect this shuts down a bit, but right now its amazing.

Rich and full-bodied. Some tannins, but not overpowering. I tasted some mocha and fruit.

I drank this with Erez (WineBerserker) at North Square in Greenwich Village. Turns out it was his first Schrader! This is certainly a delicious bottle of wine. It was good at pop n pour. I'd suggest a decant for a few hours before drinking, so the wine can open up. Drink now and enjoy, or Hold. We also drank a '92 Grace Family Cab and a '10 Maybach Chard. I preferred the youthville Scrader to the older, more elegant Grace.

My 3rd WOTN tasted blind. I thought it was a Colgin, it had been opened for about 6 hours before drinking. Pure cases, great extraction and length. This was still way too young even with the longer decant time. The tannins were in the way a little to let it truly shine. Still an excellent wine and I wish I had more!

The nose was large-scaled yet beautiful all the same, showing dark red fruits, currant, sweet herbs, cedar and spice box. On the palate, I found rich, velvety textures with a vein of acidity which kept it lively with flavors of black cherry, cola, cocoa and cream. It finished shorter than expected with a note of heat leaving an impression of cherry liquor with sweet herbs.

I had a rather strange experience with this bottle. I decanted it for about 90 minutes prior to serving. As I decanted the wine I took a small taste just to see where the wine was in its development cycle. The wine was fantastic! Deep, rich, balanced I couldn't wait to serve it when my son arrived for an early Father's Day celebration. When I served it the wine had undergone a drastic change during that 90 minutes. The nose was still beautiful with strong cherry notes but the fruit had nearly disappeared from the palate! The main component was a strong minerality with good acidity and slightly dusty tannins. This wine was not close to the wine I tasted a mere 90 minutes before. The initial taste was in the 96-97 scoring range but the 90 min. old wine was in the 87-89 point range. It was still a very good wine but a major disappointment. This is the second big name Cab that has changed for the worse after a one to one and a half hour decant. The other wine was a 2005 Shafer Hillside Select.

I would recommend that, instead of giving this wine a long decant, you serve it and let it decant in the glass so you can follow it as it opens up.

The Traveling Brisket and Helmet Show: a bit 2006 cab is probably not smart thing to open, but we "Pobegaed" it :) This is BIG. cassis, jam, ripe powerful fruit. Day 3: (honestly needed day 3 here.) Clean, though ripe, cassis and blackberry fruit. the alc has settled (on night one i breathed into the glass and almost burned my eyes out). Mid is big, ripe and nowhere near ready. rather disjointed part now - oak and fruit and acids - all there but nowhere close to coming together. heat on the finish with a good tannic grip. no clue what to score this since i cannot foretell its future. It is much more drinkable on day 3 - but i think i may pop the rest in the fridge and return in a few more days. BTW i must add a note on the bottle. This bottle is as large and many a magnum and weighs more empty than 3 other bottles. this is simply ridiculous and shameful. sorry but i honestly do not get the trend.

A nice nose of light spice, pepper & fruit - cherries & other red berries. 1st glass was light weight, but then after a 30-45 min it got thicker to medium weight. More of an elegant Zin than a big, thick Turley. Drink sooner than later.

Decanted for an hour and then good to go with steak frites and bordelaise sauce. Great drinking at age 10. Powerful early attack of thick cassis and black fruit. Long and mouthcoating sweet tannic finish mingled with burnt toast and mint.

Drank with my wife at the Four Ways Inn in Bermuda after about 45 minutes of decanting. This wine could have used 2-3 more hours of decanting as the tannins were ever present most of the night and had just begun to open up toward the end of the meal . Both of us experienced this wine with steak dinners and could vouch for the power, the depth, and the intensity of this major production from the Schrader's & winemaker Thomas Brown . Wine could use a few more years before opening.

I'm not going to do a big old note on this one because it might be slightly flawed, not sure. This is the only bottle of this I have ever tasted and after 3 tastes via Coravin I come to the same conclusion that it's either too old or it has a little funk a-la-Bordeaux (esp in the nose).

It just doesn't smell, taste or finish like a typical Schrader. It's not bad, just not very inspiring. The 93 points is a little generous.

The nose has more funk than fruit, then the fruit tries to burst through on the palate only to disappear beneath the funky structure in the finish. It's a well-made wine but perhaps well past its prime. Drink it up if you have it.
