2012 South Coast Winery Riesling Carter Estate Vineyard

Subdued aromas of lemon-lime, green apricots, kiwi, green apples, and wet stones. The palate is rich, honeyed, and tactile, and though it has a good cut, it feels a little heavy and sweet. A big step below the 2013 vintage.

A nice aroma, showing green apple Jolly Ranchers, stonefruit, apricots, limes, and a hint of baking spices. Quite a bit of substance in the mouth. Semi-viscous, concentrated, almost thick bodied, with a firm, quince-like mouthfeel that balances juicy acidity and sweet, mouthwatering flavors. No slaty minerality but closes with lime zest on the finish.

Somehow tastes like a cross between pinot noir and table wine. It was better after being opened for a few hours -- more spice and much more texture.

Transparent orange-tinged magenta. Strawberry, spice and cola nose. Light bodied, raspberries, dirty cherries, now-you-see-them-now-you-don't tannins, tobacco, some astringency, and a medium finish. A flat fruit bomb on day one, but much better on day 2. Weird.

Not a single note here. Huh. This showed up to a party I was hosting and it's been open for a day so it's had a good dose of slow ox. FWIW, the label lists the wine at 14.2%, with 26 Cab, 19 Tempranillo, 19 Franc, 14 Malbec, 8 Touriga Nacional, 8 Verdot, 3 Merlot and 3 Syrah. Quite a blend. Lots of cherry here, currant, even some saddle leather, and from what I suspect is some new wood, some notes of char and chocolate, albeit subtle. This is a medium bodied blend that brings some bright red fruit, moderate ripeness and what to me is good, anchoring acidity. The web site says the wine is $24-$30 a bottle, which seems quite fair.

Nice and crisp. Very light with hints of citrus. Paired well with grilled scallops. Also unusually good with dark chocolate afterwards while enjoying the evening in the deck.

On first opening, no discernible nose, after decanting a mild earthy nose is predominate. Earthy notes on the tongue as well, followed by a hint of vanilla. Herbal notes also starting to emerge. Very mild tannins on this one with a medium body. Overall a decent cab, just not a bold in your face one. Would pair well with lamb or even pizza, but probably not a nice ribeye.

If you want a good dry wine, this is it. We paired with grilled chicken and it was superb. A little breathing time made the taste open up. Have three more bottles and hope they are as good as this one. Also drank a bottle at the winery a month ago. That wine was also very good paired with a cheese and cracker assortment.

A very meh syrah, worth at best only the $7 tariff from World Market, but it was a local effort so I was interested.
Some darker fruit was there, a bit of oak, short finish and some 'off flavors' I can't quite place.

Rustic and concentrated, with layers of ripe cherries, currants, oak, smoke, and cola flavors. This feels clunky and disjointed and finishes sugary and jammy, which doesn't help its cause.

Nice enough petit sirah, very dark color, but fairly mild body and taste. Peppery like a Zin, with some dark plum thrown in. Very mild tannins. Guess I was expecting a bold petit sirah, but got a mellow one instead, but still was enjoyed very much.

Strong floral notes and a sweetness that seems at first to be almost syrupy, but is actually quite mellow and light on the palette. Not a normal white wine by any stretch, but something I would recommend to people who don't like most white wines. A great wine for Sunday brunch with mom.
