This is really great wine. Such a nice balance of fruit, texture, acidity...I love how more great Rhone-inspired blends are hitting the market. This is a good one.

first day it was a okay. Fruits, tannins and acids in the right places but as it warmed it slowly turned into a warm gooey mess. I think 2009 was a strange year for some WA Rhones. I had expected better from a southward single vineyard, but I will pass on Southard from now on. My other 2009 will have to wait a few years to be tried.

This wine may be in a dumb phase...fairly closed down right now, even on Day 2. Disjointed, acidity out of whack, not a lot of nose, and rather bitter. If you have any, I would recommend holding for another year or two, to see if it awakens. My first bottle last year was lovely, but this one wasn't as enjoyable.

Pencil lead, burnt earth aromas and noticeable alcohol on the nose. Full bodied and sweet palate of stewed plumbs and blackberries. This wine is huge in body, flavor, and alcohol, and not bad if you like the style.

This is a particularly good value - the wine is pleasant, with reasonable depth, balance and finish. Drank it on the same night as an Avennia Boushey Vineyard syrah so it suffered some in comparision but, still, it acquitted itself nicely - and that's saying something.

This was good, and has all the ingredients for a great wine. It was a little disjointed, and did not come together like I hoped on day 2. I'm going to sit in my other bottles for a while.

Really loving the QPR bravado this label brings. This particular showing staged a sour element that wrapped the whole back end in twang.

Dark ruby, spicy zin nose. Dry tannins with medium fruit and body, Himalayan blackberries with tart oaky tannins. Midway between fruity and restrained. More like an italian or zin after an hour open time.

A big Syrah with great varietal character. This has a bit of heat up front with petrol and spice in the nose, overall a bit tight and awkward for several hours. Early on, the palate too is driven by phenols, brine and olive among them, which dry it out. Eventually, these loosen up and barrel notes burst out of their cage in the form of almond and vanilla. The overall character is less fruit-driven than other Washington Syrah and shows it's cool climate origins. I don't pick up any of the citrus or floral notes that are mentioned in the reviews, but who knows what will happen with this one after a little more air.

Perhaps the most purely brilliant nose I've ever sniffed - fat & full of black fruit / chocolate perfection - with a hint of balsamic. Heck I gave this an extra point or two based just on that.. Killer QPR, either way.

Others have posted different content; I'm reviewing the 90% Grenache bottle. Decanted for about an hour before tasting. Nose: slightly sour cherries, strawberries, pepper and asphalt. Palate: Smooth, slightly grainy and mild tannins. Nicely integrated wine. Peppery and very pure fruits dominate early as the milerality rides on the back of fresh acidity. Smoke and leather are also present. Finish: Smoky tobacco persists as does the strawberries carried by juicy acidity. Overall a great wine for the price, and sitting in a great place right now. I wouldn't wait any longer. The flavors are obviously nice, but they are a bit delicate; this is a reserved wine. Therefore, I'd avoid serving it alongside food that has strong flavors. Probably best for either mildly flavorful food or on its own. Addendum: 3 hours after opening, the last glass is taking on some serious Chinese 5 Spice/spice box qualities on the palate and finish.

Gave a 60 minute decant.

Started out a little closed, but opened up over time.

Dark fruit flavors - Blueberry, blackberry, with some vanilla and earthiness. Continued to open up for the second night. Good acid balance.

Solid effort for the money

Syrah Blend, Syrah more

From Full Pull: This 72/28 blend of Syrah and Zinfandel is a tale of two slopes. The Zin comes from (no surprise) Stonetree on the Wahluke Slope. The Syrah comes from the Royal Slope, not yet an AVA (although I expect that to happen soon) and one of the hottest (in terms of buzz) areas for Syrah in Washington right now. It is the home to Lawrence Vineyard, which comprises about half of the Syrah in the 2011 Red. First planted out in 2003, Lawrence is a high-elevation site, ranging from 1400’-1600’, and Syrah from there has been really well-received (including the 09 Southard Lawrence Vineyard Syrah; $25 and 93pts Paul Gregutt in Wine Enthusiast).

The combination is marvelous, with the Zin adding welcome richness and heft to a lean year like 2011. The nose begins with fig, black cherry, mocha, and a lovely leafy/smoky peat note. In the mouth, there is plenty of Zinfandel character despite its low percentage, with its trademark brambly fruit and tomato paste notes. In the mouth this is plump, generous, a near perfect balance of salty savories and rich fruits that coats the palate. The finish goes on and on, impressive indeed for a wine at this tariff. Scott Southard has seemed really dialed in these past few vintages, and this is another effort that is going to impress.

Unscrewed and let sit open for about 1 hour prior to tasting. Revisited several times throughout the night. A rather dull, uninteresting bottle. We kept waiting for something to happen, for the wine to open up and show itself, but it never did. No smell of reduction or anything either. Just a flat, simple syrah.

Strong nose showing blackberry jam & black pepper. Full bodied & lush on the palate. This offers plums & blackberries accented by smoky & spicy notes. Reminds me of Ridge wines. Good stuff.

Tart cherry and something else that made me go "Bleah" immediately. Drank a couple of glasses over the course of an evening, then realized - why? Quick taste today to confirm that the frog did not become a prince - tossed the rest. Cooking wine.

I cannot believe I still have 3 bottles of this.

Medium to dark garnet, cherry nose. Dry with chewy tart tannins, red stone fruits with some bitter tannins. Medium fruit and body, just a tad on the raw side now, but not bad for $16. A night later this is developing a tart red berry profile that appeals to this Pinot drinker, tart blackberry with light tannins on the way out.
