2012 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Chardonnay Karia

Well-balanced with long apple finish. Strong apple fruit with nice mineral note. 20% maloactic fermentation is nice and does not add too much butter. Not overoaked. Could use a little more complexity.

Enjoyed this with New York Strip steak at home. Decanted for one hour. Very nice nose. Simple yet elegant. Light on tannins. Slightly fruity. Cherry, chocolate, and tobacco flavors.

Great wine showing maturity but CT has it all wrong to suggest this wine has a shelf life of 2017. Loads of fruit and structure suggests to me something more like 2025

Light cedar and raspberry nose, with darker fruit and some minerality but relatively flat tasting overall. Modest tannins and some pepper on the finish.

I bought this wine in '98 and have held it in my cellar since then. I think 2 cases in all. I've been slowly drinking it since then. Bought some '94 montelena at the same time. I believe I'm all out of both. The Fay definitely outlasted the montelena although both have been fantastic all along. The Fay still has some nice fruit remnants with a mellowed but discernable acidic finish. Nice ruby edges and faint stewed prunes as one would hope for from a fine old dame like this.

Less convinced than other recent tasters. Rather than balanced and classic (the style being aimed at) this simply felt lean and a little ungenerous. I've been disappointed in Karia before but hoped this might win me round. A weak link in the Stag's Leap range for me.

Jeez, did Wine Spectator whiff on this back in 2008, a 78 ? This is the second bottle of this that I have had in as many years, just a shining example of how great an aged Napa Cabernet can be after a few years in an well kept cellar. Stood up for 30 minutes and then decanted for 45 minutes. Insignificant but slightly noticeable signs of bricking, which is to be expected after close to ten years; medium bodied. Intoxicatingly aromatic, showing aromas of purple flowers, spicy black currant, leafy tobacco, dark berries, juicy plums, and chocolate covered cherries. Rich, expressive, balanced, complex, and elegant. Tannins, acidity, and oak all in equilibrium. Very impressive. Better than I remember from last year.

Simple and straight forward. A good wine, but nothing to obsess over. It is always a crowd pleaser though.

Popped and poured; ruby color with slightest of bricking at edge; ripe, dark berries and espresso - consistent with previous bottles, but much more distinct than I remember; well integrated oak and tannins; long finish with licorice and toasted spice notes; definitely into it's sweet spot; nicely rewarded for holding off to this point

My wife has always liked Stag's Leap Fay but we don't get to drink it that often, living in Bangkok. We opened this last Saturday night at Sensi and were more than satisfied with this one. It was still going strong but was soft around the edges, smooth, slightly sweet; in a word, perfect, for the evening. Enjoy now, not sure how long the wine will stay at this level.

Drinking nicely, gave it about 90 minutes in the decanter, nice eucalyptus note on the nose. On the palate, medium-bodied, nice fruit and tannins still showing. modest finish. Not a big california bomber, plenty of structure for some more time in the cellar.

Decanted and allowed to sit for 2 hours before drinking. Some sediment in bottle captured by strainer. Deep purple in color. Lush dark fruit and perfectly mellowed tannins. Velvety finish. Paired with ribeyes. A beautiful bottle of wine that I waited for a special occasion to open and I am thrilled with my decision.

Paired with filet mignon dinner. Good balance between fruit and earthiness. Nice wine, but for $50, not the $125 we paid at the winery back in 2012. GOOD.

Popped and poured while camping. Saved one glass for the next day. I think it showed very well for the vintage. Not overly complex but not one dimensional either. The 2010 was better, of course. The sound day it was the same.
