1990 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Fay

Stags Leap District more

6/20/2015 - La Cave d'Argent Likes this wine: 95 points

From a pristinely cellared bottle, this 25-year-old wine proved to be something very special. Deep red/garnet in color, it offers a bouquet of plum, leather, pipe tobacco, mocha and cardamom. Medium-bodied and with medium acidity, it delivers similar flavors on the palate. The tannins have fully resolved and the alcohol is well-integrated. Layered and complex in the middle, it closes with impressive length. There are no rough edges on this hedonistic wine, which has enough fruit to carry it through the rest of this decade. Drink now-2020.

Probably past its prime but still a very nice bottle of wine shared on a nice occasion. The last one...

Those who love Napa Cabernet will find this wine to be irresistable. Opaque crimson in color, it offers an equally youthful nose and palate of ripe black currants, tar, anise and smoked meat. Full-bodied and with low-to-medium acidity, it stays solid in the middle and closes long, albeit with some bite from its big firm tannins. Give this one a bit of time in the cellar. Drink 2020-2035.

Crisp, light sauv blanc with citrus fruits and a little minerality. Nice summer drinker with a light picnic lunch. I paired it with Pork Chile Verde over brown rice and it was great!

Oaky, sweet blackcurrant fruit on the nose - quite smoky. Remarkably open and approachable on the palate. Good, classic fruit, but also lots of tannins from the wood.

Although I had no trouble drinking this, I was mildly disappointed given its price point. Slightly on the dry oaky side and somewhat disjointed in the other components. May improve in a year or two.

A lot lighter than the Painted Rock Red Icon 2009. Very young purple color. A lot of oak on the nose with red berries. Same thing on the palate. Not very complex, I was expecting a lot more from this wine. Blind I would have guessed a generic Cab from California and under 20$...juicy but not special.

Started out strong but very quickly became ordinary. I have loved the other bottles so I think this has passed its prime. It was not awful; just not as good as before.

I tried this with the usual cheese and crackers, hanging out once again before catching a plane at Newark. Intriguing nose of spice, cranberries, and toasted bread. It has the familiar extracted if smooth red cherry and plum presentation, balanced with some acid on the finish and a lingering oak touch in the aftertaste. Well constructed and more complex than the '11.

Disappointing QPR, particularly compared to the 2011 vintage. This wine is ultra modern and ultra manufactured. It seems the winemaker went out of his way to restrain the wine's substance and terroir. Medium acid, very light tannin, considerable oak. Not much to it. 89-90.

Perhaps marginally better than the 2011 Hands of Time, and that makes this a wine of marginal QPR.

Red fruit, some smoke and minimal spice. Fruit seems a little muted, swirling brings it out but only mildly. Finish is short. Mild tannins. Remember this tasting better at the winery. Today more like an overpriced everyday drinker. Wondering if it's on the way down... Drink up if you have any left.

Dark fruit, earthy notes, some green elements, bit of pencil lead. I was really impressed, this was a good drinker with pretty good depth for a fairly young cab. I would guess it can hold for a while still as well.

Very good wine. The petite verdot really added to the overall flavor. Paired this with a 2007 Fay. Both were very good, but the Golden Rectangle had something more. Enjoyable.
