2012 Storybook Mountain Vineyards Zinfandel Mayacamas Range

More savory than jammy berry. Nose lacks characteristic spice. Balanced. Thin. Slightly bitter finish.

While this may be considered "a successful wine", it's not what you want when you want a spicy California BIG zin. And we're not even talking turley here....

This was tasted as a vertical with the 2012. I liked the '11 better as it had a more brick red color and brighter aromas and palate highlighted by raspberry, cherry, white pepper and some herb. Good acidity which enhances if with food.

Well integrated, tasting great with still a good amount of fruit. My inventory is done and I would recommend drinking now before it fades.....probably still have another year before diminishing.

Blinds at Californios with a stuffed nose (hence no scores) (Californios SF): This is a pretty good fruity Zin with some savoriness. I don’t know why I didn’t get it blind.
Score: Probably around 8.5. I have a stuffed nose.
-------------
Visual

- clear, bright
- moderate minus concentration ruby to a ruby rim [purple out to a violet rim]
- no gas or sediment
- moderate tears [elevated tears]

Nose

- clean
- elevated intensity
- youthful
- fruit-driven
- cherry - tart
- cherry - ripe and sweet/jammy
- ripe plum
- underripe blackberry
- no herbaceousness, minerality, or earth
- some new oak ~10-20% - sweetness, vanilla, toasty cinnamon
- moderate complexity

Palate

- I’d like to amend the oak call - there’s significant new oak on the palate- 30-50% (sawdust)
- dry [forgot to mention ripe attack, RS]
- medium plus body
- elevated alcohol 14.5% [close - actually 14.9%]
- elevated acid
- moderate tannins
- echoing the fruit on the nose:
- ripe jammy cherry, sweet cherry
- no herbaceousness, earth, or minerality
- balanced in a ripe, modern style
- complexity is moderate minus
- finish is moderate minus

Initial Conclusions

- thin-skinned grape, New World style from a warm climate
- Zinfandel - I didn’t note significant millerandage, but the structure and everything else is consistent with that. Acid’s maybe a bit lower than I’d expect.
- Pinot Noir from Sonoma - I’d expect the tannins to be lower and the acid to be higher
- Grenache from Australia - oak is too much and tannins are too aggressive, and alcohol is a bit low.

Final Conclusion

- final conclusion: Despite the medium tannins and lack of noticeable pinot sweaty/varietal character, I’m guessing Pinot Noir, Sonoma, recent vintage - 2013
- actually: Zinfandel, 2012
- 2012 Storybook Mountain Zinfandel - Mayacamas Range, Napa - 14.9%

First bottle was corked. Returned for a replacement. Solid medium body zin. Good fruitiness. Did not take notes the nights we drank it, was good.

Rich cherry flavors with notes of spice. Oak and plum dominate flavors but black cherry is also there. Still holding its own

Very well matured wine. Ripe soft fruit on the nose. Smooth drinking, soft tannins, well balanced. Just the right time to drink. Need to buy more of this one.

Didn't take very detailed notes. Drank this on the heels of the leftovers of an '09 Grange (on it's third day) and an '05 Lagier Meredith. Not having the same age/time in a decanter as the other wines didn't serve this particularly well although it was drinking pretty nicely as I recall. Pnp'ed and the wine was approachable from the beginning (versus the very tight bottle we'd had earlier this year). More subtle in the flavors than the other wines, but generally nice. Not at the same level as the Grange which clearly won the show.

Black currants and stewed blackberries on the nose - earthy. Full dark fruit flavours. Still some light tannins. Full bodied and a bit boozy (14.7%) so maybe having more fun than I should be for a Monday :). Totally enjoyable. Drink now.

A classic bottle of Zin: vibrantly fruity, with enough acidity to keep it fresh and lively. Some earthiness underlying all the fruit provides a modicum of complexity. All in all, quite a tasty example of its genre.

Nose was interesting but simple notes of dried fruit. Better than the palate though. A hint of dried fruit with flavors or very earthy flavors. Feel apart within minutes though. Interesting to try a Zin that old but this was clearly on its last legs.

It was up from the cellars for this 15 year old beauty. I'm sure in its prime it was a big bad bruiser, a smack you in the face, smash your tongue splash of berries, wood, and brambleberry spice cake.

Well, after 15 long years its (finally) matured into that senior statesman, an almost aloof, sophisticated, suave, elegant, smooth, balanced, gentleman. The alcohol was present but not a dominate presence. Nice.

I don't think BEVETROPPO gave it enough time. And I only single him out because he wrote the only other interesting review over the past 15 years on this wine. THANK YOU!!
