Decanted and allowed to air for an hour before being followed for another 3 hours. Explodes with the classic SR blue- and blackberry aromas upon decanting. With air, pipe tobacco, leather, barrel and spice encompass the heady nose. Needs at least 30 mins in the decanter to begin opening up, and - while very enjoyable - still hasn't fully opened even 2 hrs after decanting. Blueberry, black cherry, light creosote are the most obvious flavors on a silky bed that shows ripe full fruit on a dry base. Will follow thorugh 2020.

Decanted and followed over 2.5 hours. Throws off classic blueberry nose as the cork is popped. With time, blue fruit, pine tar and eucalyptus on the nose. Medium-light in weight, there are some green notes that just don't blow off during my drinking window, hidden behind ripe cherry, herbs de provence, faint pepper. Drink during '16 or '17

Beginning to come apart, tastes a bit tart and harsh although the nose is still lush and full. Hasn't held up nearly as well as the Merlots from the same era that Bob Foley made for Pride, that fruit was presumably just more age worthy.

Monday Night Blinds (Home (Noe st)): Opulent style with lots of oak and diminished acid. The fruit is too raisinated for me, though - the varietal Merlot character (chocolate-covered plum and cassis) is obscured.

100% Merlot (in 2009 they blended in Cab, and 2011 they added Cab and Petit Sirah).
Made by Bob Foley.
14.8% alcohol
16 months in 100% new French oak
Harvested October 2.
---------
(blind)

Visual:
-Clear, bright
-medium ruby to a ruby rim
-no gas or sediment
-moderate tears
Nose:
-Clean
-earth with intense fruit as well
-ripe blackberry - ripe red fruit. The fruit stops short of cassis. Slight raisination.
-sweet and sour character to the fruit
-smoked meat
-Sweet vanilla toast with baking spices and sawdust - 100% new oak (correct!)
-There's development here.
Palate:
-Dry with a ripe attack - some perceptible RS here, maybe 3-5g
-Full-bodied
-High alcohol - 14.5% (close! 14.8%).
-Medium plus acid
-Moderate tannins, fine-textured.
-More ripe fruit on the palate - intensely fruited.
-Balanced in an opulent way.
-Complexity is moderate.
-Finish is moderate plus.
Initial:
-Raisination/possible millerandage
-Fruit-driven, high alcohol, moderate tannins:
-New World wine from a hot climate.
-Development: Maybe 5-10 years old.
-Zinfandel - I'd expect higher acid, not so much smoked meat.
-Malbec - I'd expect higher tannins.
-Shiraz - could fit.
-GSM blend from Australia. Could also fit.
Final Conclusion:
-Based on the elevated color, I think this isn't a GSM blend.
-Zin or Shiraz.
-Zin - lighter color, wouldn't put this much oak on a zin. But the millerandage and RS is consistent with that.
-Australia > Shiraz > Barossa Valley (heftier style) high quality producer, 2010.

-Amarone should have been on there.

Actually:
2006 Switchback Ridge Merlot Napa Valley, peterson family vineyard, 100% new French oak, 18 months.

Disappointing, given a mid-$80's price tag. I had high hopes but the best I can give it is 91, and that may be a tad generous. I found it a little on the syrupy side. The nose is nice but not overwhelming.

PnP with initial notes of blackberry, black cherry, black and red currant, black licorice, and vanilla bean. A chalky (but not astringent) tannic clamp gently engulfed the fruit flavors on the back end.

Slow O2 for two hours and an additional two hours in the decanter at cellar temperature (54 degrees). Much deeper, richer flavors of milk chocolate (a little like a Milk Dud), vanilla bean, melted tar, and sweet raspberry and blueberry liqueur. A more creamy, voluptuous texture, with the alcohol/tannins totally in check.

Just a kiss of noticeable sweetness from the oak may distract some consumers (though I personally did not find it off-putting), but time will likely help to integrate that out of the overall flavor profile (or at least not have it so much at the forefront).

For those who have experienced with the Old Vine PS from Switchback, this is a close cousin. Foley surely puts the fruit up front, but there are enough other layers to hold additional interest.

I will hold for another year before delving into the next one. If opening now, I recommend a decant of at least two to three hours. 94-95+ for now.

Needs a couple hour decant. Very fine wine in a dense, deep, ripe, forward, full bodied, Napa kind of way. Good balance, lots of cassis flavor and aroma, not huge on complexity, lots of crusty sediment too. Glad I found this one. Shows no sign of age...youthful

This is still big, fat and expressive with a firm tannic grip. Telltale SBR notes of black cherry, kirsch and mocha. Good stuff and I'd take the over on the CT drinking window.

Opened from 375 and went right after it. Man, this bottle is so much better than the one from Halloween 2014 (which sounds like markcic's experience in his note--funny how we are identical on this point). Of course, that was 16 months ago but it tells an important truth that wine does change with time and in this instance, the wine went on a 180 from that last bottle. This smells and tastes like SR Merlot. Clovey nose from the new oak (and FWIW, no heat). The palate has a mix of dark chocolate and red cherry fruit, herb. The texture has a juicy quality. You know what, this is damn good, with a nice long finish. It has a measured decadence and it works.

Same as my CT notes from October 2015, except that this really presented itself with a rich smoothness that was even more notable than a few months ago. I bumped this up to 94 points. Unbelievably smooth considering this clocks in at 17%+ ABV.

I decanted for about an hour, but it really didn't need it. Decadent and unctuously thick. A great PS!

OMG - what a difference a year made, this wine is so much better than the bottle I drank in November of 2014, we pnp'd from a 375, fruit on the nose the palate was dark cherries and chocolate, a very long smooth finish. A total delight.

Dark fruit, great acidity with background oak that has calmed down. There is a slight hole in the middle, I don't see this as getting better.

Beautifully balanced! Almost black in color, this wine hits the right spots with deep black cherry and blackberry. Somehow, switchback managed to hide the heat from the 16.8% abv, and it drinks so smoothly, the alcohol can sneak up on you! its not as thick as I was expecting, in a good way. Great 30 second finish

Dark fruits, inky, meaty and smoke... tastes like a Petite Sirah with some Syrah blended in. Dark as night in color.

Well done big PS.

Just brilliant - we let it sit open for 2.5 hours and then poured through a vintorio. Dark fruit on the nose, the palate is dark berries, mocha and fig. A long smooth finish. It will still improve and I will sit on my remaining 4 bottles for a year or two.

Slow O2 over the course of 5 hours. Up front notes of plush, ripe plum, black raspberry, blueberry, chocolate/mocha, and a hint of anise.

A very good SBR that evolved nicely over the course of the evening. I would recommend waiting a year or two to revisit this wine, as it definitely has the stuffing for some mid-term aging. A pleasantly softer SBR by comparison to some of their other reds (which can be highly tannic and acidic if drunk too young). 94+ for now.
