Drinking really well now. Incredible body and so well integrated right now. Hard to believe it will get better but my experience with these wines is that it will.

This GSM blend competes very well with its Rhone peers in both price and quality. It has been quite some time since my last visit to Tablas Creek. I think they have improved and have really nailed it with this bottle.

Decanted one hour. That made a big difference compared to my last bottle. Very nice, relatively inexpensive GSM.

Crimson ruby, dark yet translucent. Fragrant black raspberry, wild cherry, and cracked pepper with an exotic and prominent lavender incense entwining the fruit, and some of that wonderful fir forest character of Esprit. That incense quality is rare, something one sees mostly in top dollar CdP. The aromas sing first of Grenache, or is it youthful Mourvedre? with a distant chorus of gamey Syrah. It starts tart, bright cranberry on the palate, then turns sweet and feminine with a savory rosemary middle, and has a mildly tannic follow through. Only lacking some oomph at the end, otherwise would rate about 95.

Excellent harmony and integration already, so eminently drinkable now. Certainly worth following every year for a few years, but unfortunately it is in short supply. I'll probably have another in 2017 to follow its progress and then wait to 2020 for the last bottle. Whatever, I think this is richer than the excellent 2012, and, even better, it may improve with development. Solid 92, 4 + 15 + 17 + 6.

What a fabulous example of this wine. Glad I have more. Highly recommend buying this wine in any year that TCV makes it.

Elegant and refined white with a sophisticated flavor profile that is delicious with food. Restrained and un-California in a positive way. This wine tasted young and should improve over the years.

Medium minus gold color. Next to the copper color of the 2002 Beaucastel Blanc. Honey, wool, and frosty aromas. On the palate some potpourri nuance, with lots of viscosity. Pronounced acidity.

2013 Tablas Creek Syrah

Paso Robles more

1/30/2016 - SLOFred wrote: 91 points

Just released. This wine is just a really elegant example of the varietal. This is by no means an "in your face" Syrah. Elegant is the word. Tannins are really soft, typical of the TCV 2013 vintage. Right now, just the primary flavors of syrah are featured. Certainly will benefit with some aging but this wine can be consumed now, mostly because of the soft tannins.

Extremely enjoyable and drinking really well right now. The CT end date shows 2020, but I don't know if I'd want to wait as it's completely integrated, showing full 2ndary flavors in perfect harmony. Attractive QPR! Drank an '11 Justin Isosceles afterwards and I preferred the Tablas much more.

Dark red-purple color.. Grape-y and boysenberry nose. On arrival, low tannin, low acidity, slightly fizzy. Residual sweetness, not finished dry. Gobs of boysenberry fruit. Finishes sweet and overripe. Disappointing. Bottle #2 of two.

Pop/pour. Nice bottle from Tablas. Not as rich as the Esprit, but a very nicely done blend of "everything and the kitchen sink". Medium bodied. Elegantly made, while at the same time the blend evokes a sense of rusticity. Surprisingly layered and complex transition from mid palate to finish. Would benefit from a brief decant.

Black licorice, tarry garrigue, sappy yerba santa herb, if this is supposed to be a Chateauneuf clone from California it's very well done. At this age, it's got transparency and focus despite the high alcohol, a little mushroomy but mostly meat and herbs. Cherry, plum, a touch smoky and minty too over a silky palate. Yum! Well done.

Fairly shy at first, this took a while to wake up in the decanter. Even then - on it's own - it remained quiet and a little soft with melon, citrus and tropical fruits. Paired with Moroccan spiced halibut, however, this was the perfect thing. That softness allowed it to spread out a bit and support the food, becoming rounder and fuller as the two played off each other. Tasty.

1/25/2016 - millerarner Likes this wine: 90 points

Poured blind (knowing only it was a single varietal) couldn't come up with any possibility other than domestic Grenache. Even got the Paso part right. Vibrant, fresh, non-jammy cherries without a hint of the horse stall that can often tip off a Mourvèdre. Still youthful, with nicely balanced acid and concentration, without being over extracted. Lacks complexity, but very pleasurable.

PNP from wine fridge - in the glass the color is clear and elegant. A full & rich nose beckons, and as it hits the palate it blossoms into a full, rich bouquet with soft structure then ever so slightly narrows with a hint of lemon at the back. Stems up!
