2011 Tablas Creek Roussanne

Paso Robles more

An unorthodox Roussanne, displaying strong minerality and tart citrus. The stone fruit component I associate with the grape is lacking. Not my idea of what a white Rhone varietal should taste like.

Nose: fruit forward with notes of ripe lychee, peach, lemon zest, with hints of wet stone and white florals. Very attractive. Taste: dry, medium body with a silky smooth texture. Delicious notes of peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream, white florals, white pepper, and apricot and white grapefruit bringing a welcomed acidity. Very clean finish (not rich). Well balanced; I am especially appreciating the effort to integrate the florals with fruit here (to my taste, preferable at just slightly cooler than room temp, as the florals come through more strongly when cold). Enjoyable and interesting, but would prefer some additional depth - a little too restrained! 89

Nose: light lychee meat, strong peach, lemon. Fruit forward with crisp aroma. A bit of mineral and something like the smell of a newly opened electronic (eg. Laptop). Taste: peach central with hint a milky (not creamy) peach cobbler notes. White flower undertone. Good milky texture. Cracked peppercorn in the finish. A bit of unsweetened yogurt. Very unique profile especially clean and dry profile coming out when the wine is cold. Tasted at RT. It doesn't match my personal preference, otherwise 90+.

Tasted in a three-vintage lineup of 2012, 2013, and 2014. All stored since release. On opening, 12 came across as a bit astringent and acidic, with a bit of tanginess, while the 13 and 14 were sequentially richer and more lush, with everyone preferring 14. After an hour of air, they all gained weight and richness, with the effect that 12 became beautifully balanced and complex, while 14 ended up just feeling heavy, especially on a hot day. Leave 13 and 14 alone, and let 12 air for an hour if opening now. Serve at 50ish.

Need to make sure it is not at refrigerator temp. As it warms up it is a lovely vine. Great acidity. Wonderful fruit. Great varietal character.

Dark red color. Ripe, jammy nose; heads rather too close to grape bubblegum for serious evaluation. On arrival, low tannin and low acidity; very smooth and nice viscosity. It has residual sugar, yes it's noticeable sweet. For a flagship dry wine representing the winery's ambition, this is a big disapointment.

Wonderfully smooth and integrated. After a while, the nose really opened up with floral notes mixed with cedar, leather and hints of wet earth and tobacco. Delicate, drinkable yet complex.

A respectable wine. But I think as I have gotten older my standards keep getting higher! Not up to the cotes and certainly not any of the single varietals and the esprit.

Holding nicely! Opulent stone fruits like nectarines and white cherries backed by citrus and tartaric. Reveals some layering as the temp rises. Wonderfully refreshing in the backyard on a muggy evening before the arrival of mosquitoes in N. VA.

Rhone Rangers WashDC June 18, 2015. Whatever palate fatigue I had after sampling (but not swallowing) 30 plus wines, this Mourvedre really stood out. Tangy, bold, full bodied, with signature young Mourvedre aromatics of black fruits, grape jelly, marinated steak, earth and au jus. Noticeable length. It really perked me up, and yes, I swallowed. More like something I expect from Ridge than Tablas.
