2012 Tenuta delle Terre Nere Etna Rosso

Etna DOC Nerello Mascalese more

Fresh and food friendly as always but slightly discombobulated. Quite some heat on the back end. We stored this at less than perfect place for some months but not sure if it's that or if these nerellos go through some sort of tunnel, and if that's the case, whether they will come out on the other side? Also, we opened this at warmer temperature than I use to serve these beauties, and no real aeration, and the simplest of glass ware was used. So there you have the full range of possible excuses from a die hard fan of these Etna wines. All I know is that these have been extremely good upon release, and good value at that.

Terre nere (black soil) indeed, in fact this was dripping with it - good thing I love soil notes. The palate showed best below 65F, with a touch of brett, ripe pomegranate and good acidity. Better on night #2, this continues to impress and satisfy - the low price, just a bonus. 14,5% abv (mostly resolved). recommended

PnP, served non-blind over 2 nights.

Bright, lifted, bitter cherry and ripe plum, with intense rusty aromas; allusions to leather and sweet licorice in such a light body. I can see why so many folks fall for this.

Like Burgundy's twin brother, if his twin had moved away from home at a young age and had been living under a cloud of volcano ash. Delicious. Still a youngster, with loads of upside if you can be patient.

A lovely and completely adorable wine from star producer Terre Nere. The first sniff shows abundant flowers and then an exotic fruit compote emerges with apricot, tangerine, mango and papaya. This crescendo is surrounded by a fresh and crisp veil of lemon zest and a light velvety character (perhaps from oak treatment?). The palate does not let us down. It is crisp and elegant but still powerful, just all the wines from Terre Nere usually are. There is enough texture to have this effort age well for another couple of years. A brilliant white for sure - well worth seeking out.

Boozy but deep and thrilling. Spicy. Volcanic. Young and closed. A detailed and nuanced bouquet hints at what this might one-day offer. A certain softness. Would really like to try some older vintages of this.

Nice balance but less personality than the Santo Spirito. Lean with bitter tannins.

Rich beautiful nose. Dark and bright, both, with great intensity and rolling volcanic tannins. Drinking best of the TdTN '13 crus.

Berries, salt, tar, ash. Sweet, very appealing nose. Green pepper. Additional green notes. A little harsh right now. Wait 3 years and try in 2018.

Straight white grape acid; young, sour, green table grape; saved by a tart finish that fans out a little sweet and salty. Do not serve too cold.

The consummate etna rosso. Textured cherry. Strawberries on a warm day. Broadens significantly with 20 min air. Orange and cocoa. Oats maple and brown sugar smell. Not sweet but somehow like the most delicious cake. Drink 2017-2024.

Never disappoints. Pop and pour ready. No need to decant and lose some of the progression; no/little sediment. Great adid/tannin balance. Has many years left. Great red fruit, spice.

Dark cherry fruit, minerals and earthiness; hint of heat both on the ripe fruit and alcohol overall very seductive wine light on its feet and full of flavour. Very enjoyable now. I tasted 3 bottles over the last couple of years and this one was by far the most enjoyable and ready to drink.

I ended up feeling that putting the Prephylloxera on the label is a great marketing gimmick. If you didn't see that you wouldn't pay as much attention and it would be a good but nothing special Sicilian volcanic wine. Which I really like! Cherry and tartness. Long finish

Immediate explosive aromatics with roses, sweet red fruits. Red fruits and seemingly several layers of minerality. Still holding major tannins, though not harsh. More modern and polished in style than the Calabretta we had the same weekend. I think this will profit well from additional bottle aging.

I took this from the cellar by mistake, I had wanted a different Terre Nere, but once I had it in the dining room I went ahead and opened it anyway. My first instincts were right, it is still not ready, consistent with my previous notes and with Jerwin1943. That said, it is evolving, even if slowly, as sweet floral elements have become more prominent in the nose, which remains very complex, even as the palate remains tight and austere. To summarize, even if the nose has become a bit more Burgundy-like, I would say that the palate has become more Barolo-like, with a huge structure of tannins, acid and minerals. It remains very long, vinous and flavorful. A huge, satisfying and complex wine that is nevertheless very young. Much more approachable one day later.

To be clear, my high rating of this wine based on its inherent quality, structure and what it will become in a few years, I am not recommending it so highly for current drinking.

Great acidity, some tertiary notes on the nose. Fine tannins but slightly bitter. I'd say the wine is at peak and should be drunk in the next 2 years. QPR is not good though, especially compared to the Etna Rosso

The wine has a medium intensity, lemon color.

The nose is youthful with a medium aroma intensity. Aromas of ripe lemon, white peach, yellow apple, orange blossom and salty stones.

On the palate the wine is dry with a medium acidity and body. The mouthfeel is quite rich and oily. The flavor intensity is medium with flavors of sweet lemon juice, orange blossom, mixed apples and stones. The finish is medium with a slight bitterness to it which is a bit disturbing.

Not the best example of Etna Bianco I've had but definitely a good wine at it's price point. Easy-drinking, refreshing and a good pairing to the classic mediterranean cucina!

The nose is gorgeous and full of flowers, Peaches, salty minerals. The palate is thin and simple, pear/tangerine popsicle with good acidity but nowhere near as accomplished as the nose. But still a good summer thirst quencher on a warm evening.

Nebbiololikt.

Mer koncentration och tryck än deras enklare Etna Rosso men också mörkfruktigare och mindre elegant. Behöver definitivt lagras längre. 88p+ nu men absolut potential för högre poäng.
