2007 Tenuta delle Terre Nere Etna Il Quadro delle Rose Feudo di Mezzo

Etna DOC Nerello Mascalese more

I took this rom the cellar by mistake, I had wanted a different Terre Nere, but once I had it in the dining room I went ahead and opened it anyway. My first instincts were right, it is still not ready, consistent with my previous notes and with Jerwin1943. That said, it is evolving, even if slowly, as sweet floral elements have become more prominent in the nose, which remains very complex, even as the palate remains tight and austere. To summarize, even if the nose has become a bit more Burgundy-like, I would say that the palate has become more Barolo-like, with a huge structure of tannins, acid and minerals. It remains very long, vinous and flavorful. A huge, satisfying and complex wine that is nevertheless very young. Much more approachable one day later.

To be clear, my high rating of this wine based on its inherent quality, structure and what it will become in a few years, I am not recommending it so highly for current drinking.

Great acidity, some tertiary notes on the nose. Fine tannins but slightly bitter. I'd say the wine is at peak and should be drunk in the next 2 years. QPR is not good though, especially compared to the Etna Rosso

The wine has a medium intensity, lemon color.

The nose is youthful with a medium aroma intensity. Aromas of ripe lemon, white peach, yellow apple, orange blossom and salty stones.

On the palate the wine is dry with a medium acidity and body. The mouthfeel is quite rich and oily. The flavor intensity is medium with flavors of sweet lemon juice, orange blossom, mixed apples and stones. The finish is medium with a slight bitterness to it which is a bit disturbing.

Not the best example of Etna Bianco I've had but definitely a good wine at it's price point. Easy-drinking, refreshing and a good pairing to the classic mediterranean cucina!

The nose is gorgeous and full of flowers, Peaches, salty minerals. The palate is thin and simple, pear/tangerine popsicle with good acidity but nowhere near as accomplished as the nose. But still a good summer thirst quencher on a warm evening.

Doftar mörkbärigt, örtkryddigt, lakrits, grusig mörk mineralitet.
Lite oförlöst och med rejäl strävhet.
Nebbiololikt.

Mer koncentration och tryck än deras enklare Etna Rosso men också mörkfruktigare och mindre elegant. Behöver definitivt lagras längre. 88p+ nu men absolut potential för högre poäng.

Cherry cough drop and tar nose. Same on the palate, with some earthiness & spice. Clean but bold wine, beautiful core of fruit, good acidity, dusty tannins, long finish. Went well with vegetable lasagna. Very good wine and interesting region. Need to try more wines from Mount Etna to get a better sense of the region.

Ruby color, medium body. Somewhat sweet, confected flavor as others have noted, but enough spice, tannin, and acidity to make it interesting.

Medium-light golden color, clear.
The nose is changing and somewhat elusive, mineral and floral, as if in soap bar, with a hint of sweetness. Then tea leaves, as if from a long lees contact. As it warms up in the glass it changes still, and I get ashes and later candle wax.
Light-footed on the palate, but with substance. Very mineral, with a special texture as if from a lean, bony body. Very special. I enjoyed it and plan to revisit it in a few years.

Decanted for two hours and followed for two more. Expressive nose of red cherries, earth, wet wood, new leather, and a hint of varnish/VA. Juicy cherries, earth, and a little oak on the palate. Tannins are quite firm and furry so it's hard to get a read on the palate at this point. Nice finish. There's something good here but it's so young and firm that it's hard to know for sure.

Still very primary. Dark garnet core, clear. Ripe-ish red berry aromas mainly, with faint soil and mineral notes. I first tasted this as a sample at last year's Vin Italy fair, and i think I liked it more then. Time will tell if this slims down (and comes together) or not, but I'm not going to get a case based on last night's bottle (which I was fully intending to do after checking it out once more); if there's any complexity to be had here, it's years away - though really, I don't see it. Additionally, the price has gone up about 40% in the local market in just a few vintages, which makes this a fair value as opposed to the tremendous bargain of years past. 13,0% abv. This one is for your friend that says he/she doesn't care for Italian wines - probably something there for you, too.

Slow-O 1 hr; served non-blind. I see no reason to hold, drink now.

VinItaly Day 4 (Verona, Italy): 140 year old vines!, 600m in elevation within Calderara Sottano vineyard; deep bright crimson; deep rose and sour cherry, some volcanic, you can smell the nobility; rich and full, floral, palate reminds me of a beautiful Nebbiolo with more minerality; great wine but I am not sure how many decades this has before peak, '06 I popped a year or so ago was still an infant.

100% Carricante; light yellow green; musky melon, strong chalky mineral, tons of character, crisp apple, lime/grapefruit pith, some malo and leesy richness; medium plus body, good focus and richness; like a grand cru Chablis; yum, probably best Italian white from trip.
