2011 Terrazas de Los Andes Malbec Reserva

Pleasant, somewhat monolithic Malbec in a modern style. Nose of dark fruits, cocoa, coffee, a hint of soy; on the palate the wine is dense and extracted, but has enough acidity not to be overly cloying. Still some moderately significant tannins, which make me think a few more years of cellar time might do this wine good and allow some secondary aromas and flavors to emerge.

Vanillary nose. Medium bodied, dry, very smooth, showing yellow stone fruit with vanilla and a creamy aspect. Quite nice despite of the oak derived flavors. Had a glass at Mattolaituri.

The wine is clear and bright with a deep garnet colour.

The nose is clean and developing, showing pronounced intensity aromas of oak (vanilla, walnut), MLF (toffee), black fruit (dark plum, dark cherry) and hints of flowers (lavender).

The wine is dry in the mouth with a medium acidity. It has high ripe and supple tannins with a high slightly warm alcohol. It has a full body and pronounced intensity flavours of oak (vanilla, walnut), MLF (toffee), black fruit (dark plum, dark cherry) and hints of flowers (lavender). The finish is long.

It is a very good quality wine. It has a lingering finish and very concentrated flavours. The alcohol and tannins are well-balanced with the support of the fruit concentration, however the wine needs to be more complex to be considered outstanding.

Can drink now, but it has enough tannic structure and fruit concentration to develop some more complex tertiary aromas over the next 2-3 years.

This requires significant time in a decanter. I gave it two hours. Inky black and deep garnet at the rim. Beautiful long legs, just like my wife's. Dark fruits, violates, licorice and tobacco at mid-palate, firm tannins and strong finish. Very nice if given the time to decant. Would benefit from additional time in the cellar.

Deep ruby red color. Medium (+) intensity on the nose with a lot of black fruit and earth going on. The body disappoints with a medium (+) acidity which is unbalanced with the other elements of the wine. Medium finish.

Cheval Blanc and D'Yquem dinner with Pierre Lurton and Bernard Burtschy (Taberna del Alabardero, Washington D.C.): Very primary nose displaying opulent blue and black fruits, crèmes des cassis, blueberry jam, dark spices, mint, black pepper and tar. Excellent concentration, jammy yet fresh blue fruit driven palate impression, mineral, piercing acidity, nicely integrated tannins and long sweet and acidic finish. It taste like a very young high end Malbec. If you like opulent fruit, you will enjoy this wine.

Cheval Blanc and D'Yquem dinner with Pierre Lurton and Bernard Burtschy (Taberna del Alabardero, Washington D.C.): Obviously very different than Cheval Blanc. Big scale nose displaying acidic black fruits, pine, tar, bitter chocolate, graphite and scorched earth. Excellent concentration, silky ripe black fruits driven palate impression, mineral, tar and ash, piercing acidity and nicely integrated tannins. It may sound like an oxymoron but it tasted like a nicely aged Malbec.

The bottle was still in great shape considering it should have been opened 5-7 years ago. A nice solid medium body Malbec. Would definitely try a later vintage of this great value label.

On day 1 the acid was a bit showy. Day 2 very refined and smooth. There is a large oak component to this wine. There is also tons of fruit, spice, and earth. This wine has time left. If you have it cool and calm, leave it alone.

(Kingsleys w Elaine, Chirong) Effusive dark florals, blueberries, strawberries, plum florals and sweet smallgoods. Almost GSM-esque. Similarly rich, silky, effusive, silky, and incredibly savoury, finishing with bitter pitch and black herbs, with characteristic graphite empty mid-palate. Young but absolutely approachable - lovely with our Cape Grim steak!

Clearly a modern-styled torrontes -- not that I've ever had a old-school version -- and delicious. Nose of tangerine, Italian herbs and minerals; full-bodied; with a rather intense sense of sweet herbs dominating the palate. Full-throttled and easy sippin', but the acidity and minerality make it a good match for all sorts of food.

This showed a gorgeous and refined bouquet of bright, rich raspberry fruit with blueberry skins, and spice notes filling the senses. Hints of chalk dust, herbs and savory pepper added depth and intrigue. On the palate it was perfectly focused and balanced with dark red fruit carried by smooth, medium-bodied textures and gripping acidity. The finish was clean and refined with herbal hints and lingering notes of wild blueberry. To say I ‘liked’ this would be an understatement.
