2008 Three Wine Company Zinfandel Old Vines

Contra Costa County more

Almost 4 years since my last bottle, this now has fresh fruit, roasted meat, and spice on the nose and palate, with a fairly long finish. Alcohol has been integrated/diminished. I would buy more at $15+/btl. Glad to have 3 more.

Lively zin, with a good balance of fruit, acid, and tannin. Stands on its own and paired well with beef. A solid wine for $20.

as before. Not QUITE as gnarly and "nasty" as the 2011. But a GREAT zin for BBQ ribs with spicy BBQ sauce (KC masterpiece is great with this zin). Great fruit and "other stuff." no sign of age

great zin for those of us that like LOTS of "stuff going on" Great dark fruit....but with endless layers of all sorts of very dark brooding brambly leathery cigar box etc and "(good) nasty flavors. Absolutely Fantastic with ribs and spicy BBQ sauce (KC Masterpiece). Not for the feint of heart ...and not for those who like pure dark fruit zin flavors. No sign of age.

Robust but balanced blend meant for every day drinking and hearty cuisine. A little hot but should settle down and get better. There is enough acidity to go along with the juicy red fruits. At 15% alcohol this packs a nice punch but is quite easy to drink.

Great fruit with cinnamon flavor. Deep Purple in color. This wine has character, depth and a full bodied finish. This wine is a mixture of Zinfandel, Mataro, Carignan, Alicante, Petit Syrah and Malvasio Nero. Although I swore there was a Shiraz flavor. Aging is only going to improve this wine. Properly this is Three Wine Company Old Vines Field Blend. The picture shown is incorrect.

Extremely nice wine. Flavorful, lots of body and a great finish. This vintage is slightly unfinished as compared to the 2012 with was superb. Suggest cellaring for awhile.

Wineguyfl nailed the description. I especially agree that I can't see why the window starts at 2018. It's drinking really well right now, with nothing more (in my experience) than a pour through a Vinturi. At the same time, I also agree that it might even get better and bump a couple of points with cellar time. The problem is going to be that it's already just so good. I worry with a wine like this that too much cellaring is going to soften it up from the beautifully explosive, yet complex, Cali red blend that it is right now. Pretty sure our bottles won't last long enough for this to be a concern.

Very interesting blend. A bigger wine than other Three wines that I have had, but still subtle, light on its feet. We opened it along with a 2007 Xavier Chateauneuf Cuvée Anonyme, and this was clearly new world, much sweeter. But in the same ball yard, from a quality/camplexity standpoint. Worked well with the dinner, too.

Decanted for two hours; no sediment. Clear dark ruby red. Nose of black berries, some spice and a hint of alcohol. Medium to light bodied dark fruit on the palate, but with considerable heat. Tannins are quite prominent on the finish. Overall, the structure would benefit from more acids. Maybe this will improve with time, but the low acid problem probably won't change. At $16, I've certainly had better wines.

The Three Wine Company has held my interest for some time, but this is only my second tasting experience. I am a fan of Contra Costa wines, and Matt Cline has a link with the best sites.

This glass of Old Vine Field Blend, served slightly warmer than cellar temperature, is almost opaque in color/transparency. Initially the nose is muted but, after five minutes in the glass, notes of earthy, almost burnt baking spices emerge. Aromas of cherry compote, red raspberry, cumin and clove, as well as spent espresso grounds slowly become clearer. Palate reveals red fruit, cherry Jolly Rancher flavors (minus the sweetness), stewed plum, and zippy acidity. The finish is longer than I initially anticipated, yet heavily marked by oak and acid. The fresh oak was not apparent in the nose, the beginning or mid-palate, yet it is unmistakably dominant in the finish.

Day #2: The nose is somewhat muddled but fresh, with red, sour cherry and earthy, dark, coffee and chocolate elements. There is a much better harmony of flavor components. This is what I looked forward to! The acidity has melded into the berries and fruit, while much of the flavors have begun to sing in harmony, accompanied by a surprisingly long finish. As Carignan occupies more than half of the blend, I was anticipating a brief resonance of flavors in this red wine. Best of all, no oak is detected.

Day #3: The clarity of fruit is gone; the acidity is out of step with the palate. Alcohol, tinged with oak, gives the nose a bourbon-like presence (think Maker's Mark). The mid-palate is a gob of murky, stewed fruit and dark chocolate. The finish is hot.

I do not think that the wine is going to require early consumption, despite the notes herein. The 2012 Three Wine Company Old Vine Field Blend will live for at least another 5-7 years, if stored well. I believe that the red fruited acidity of day two can carry the wine into a better place than it is now. If served in the near-future, please enjoy it slightly below room temperature.

A bit grapey, new world for sure. But some nice complexity and enough acid to balance the sweet fruit.

This wine has a nice rich and almost syrupy mouth feel. There is spicy dark fruit and pepper from the zin, tannins from the cab, and a tang especially on the finish that might come from the Cinsault. There are lots of layers in this pleasantly complex wine. Wish we had some in our cellar.

Rich ruby red; dark fruits with hints of vanilla and tobacco (all the tar seems to have given way); very smooth; rich flavors; big silky tannins; nice long finish.

Very tasty and drinking well. The zinfandel component adds decadence. The mouvedre adds complexity. If you like complex blends, you will like this one. Might be a little better than the 92 rating I gave it. I know the recommended drink window says to not try until 2018......I disagree. It was fine after being opened for an hour or so with no decant. Maybe time will prove me wrong......we shall see.

Dark garnet color, expressive, fruity nose. Complex and balanced on the palate, dry, but some sweetness on the mid-palate, lots of fruit, plenty of structure. Long finish. Paired wonderfully with bolognese pasta and a steak salad. This wine is evolving nicely.

As it sits it seems to be changing rapidly. This bottle showed off the red fruits and the pepper and brambly feature of a Zin. A day in the closed bottle gave it much more character and heavy but smooth nature. On this one the tongue zings and then it sings!

Good balance, easy to drink, but not quite a home run as others have pointed out. Had it on a zin tasting and was not quite at the level of, say, La Storia's zin from the same year (Matt and Miro are both genius-level when it comes to zins).

Nice strong aromas which I could sample from almost a foot away from the glass. Primarily black fruits with a touch of floral on the nose. The taste combines blackberry jams, 5 spice, hibiscus, and butterscotch. Strong alcohol, but not enough to detract from the bottle. Very long persistent finish.

Had to re-rate after 2 days of pumped storage. Initial jaminess is gone, and tannins have mellowed so that the wine is in balance. Really nice old vine character. Now looking forward to remaining bottles.
