Retail $69. On the dark side for rosé champagne and a bit musty initially. Strangely, there is a chocolate note on the palate. We have had this for a bit and the evolution seems to be going in a wonderful direction. Deep, rich, and that chocolate thing. Just short of a whoa. thedrunkencyclist.com

Zachys Power of Packaging - Jan 2016 (Smith & Wollensky (48th & 3rd Ave)): There was something just a touch off when we first opened the bottle. Maybe a touch more sour and acidic than it should have been (my memories of this wine are of pure soft cashmere bubbles a bit more on the fruit and a bit less on the toast which can be a satisfying). This time even when the mustiness blew off it was still a bit more toasty than I remember. The bubbles were very soft and almost barely perceptible. The wine was good. Not as great as the last time, but I preferred it to a nice Rose Champagne that was served later (Armand de Brignac).

Light apricot/salmon color. Lemon, wet stone, honey and orange flower nose. White peach, apricot, sweet ripe orange and mineral palate. Good balance but leans a touch sweet.

Very toasty, brioche autolytic nose. Pure honey note. Undertones of green apple and white flowers on palate. Very elegant. Very finely textured mousse. Plenty of sweet, French pastry character to finish. Long. Will revisit in a few years.

Although Veuve Clicquot's NV Brut Yellow Label Champagne has never been at the top of my list for casual drinking champers, it has usually been a respectable choice. That was, until recently. I noticed upon grabbing a case recently that the label and packaging had shrunk. The main label which had once covered the main base of the bottle was now a fraction of the original size, and the neck wrapping now extended barely past the spout. Not as beautiful a bottle, but hey... It couldn't change that dramatically, could it?
I was wrong.
Gone was the zesty acidity and light brioche notes with bright fruits with a nod to maturity and depth. Any complexity was gone. Left behind is a honeyed sweetness, no doubt due to high fructose corn syrup dosage and no time on the lees. There is an apple and pear stench overwhelming any other aromas. The taste is like prosecco's grape juice without any of the fun.
And, all this would be fine if I were paying $10-12 a bottle and drinking it like water. But, at nearly $45-55 a bottle this is an abysmal waste of money. Save yourself $20 and grab some Nicholas Feuillatte. Same flavor with some depth and age at a fraction of the cost.
Over the past 15 years I've watched as Veuve has gone all over the map with their NV in flavor and profile. Some great, some not so much. With this latest offering, I won't waste anymore time with this house. I'll go for Moet et Chandon or Perrier Jouet for myregular Champers. Buh bye Veuve!

Vin Chicago Annual Champagne tasting, tasting sample. Lemon and brioche on the nose, moderate acidity, and good length. Prefer the rosé for their house style, but still a well made wine.

Compared to the Vintage Rosé this is rather poor. Green notes, asparagus, gooseberries, bell pepper, chemical cleaner on top of sweet raisiny fruit. Dry on the palate but with a generous dosage, tart acidity and a medium intensity.

No fun on the nose and awkward on the palate. 50€ for this is robbery!

On the nose, crushed stones, sea shells, some oaky spices, cinnamon and cardamom. Bright red fruit and a bit of yeast. Dry with a fresh, medium + acidity. There is a bit of youthful tartness as well, giving the Champagne a pleasant dry, chalky finish.

Impressive! Would be nice to try in a few years.

Tasted only a day or so after the 2002, this was somewhat in its shadow. Yes it expresses all the virtues I've said before - expansive mouthfeel and a lovely fresh fruitiness, lively mousse and fantastic freshness.

Don't get me wrong, a lovely Champagne, and I'm glad I've still got a couple for the years to come. But under the circumstances, the 2002 for me is a cut above at the moment.

Best bottle of this so far. Standout highlight of the whole festive period.

Lively yet elegant mousse, and a great rounded nose. It has hints of the house bread/yeast, but with a lovely reserved fruitiness (principally citrus) with maybe a touch more age-related things in the background starting to push through.

45 second lingering finish was a joy to behold. We both were literally silent for the time and then looked at each other and blurted out the same thing.

Clearly its showing a little age, being a little leaner and more citrusy - but not in a biting, acidic way, in a really refreshing mouthwatering way.

Went perfectly with a decadent seafood platter of fresh crab, lobster, baby squid. mackerel, mussels and prawns.

Just to add to the discussion below, I feel this wine is improving over its lifespan and just hitting it's stride, with room yet for further ageing. Vive la difference!

Mostly 1966 Bordeaux and other surprises (Ripple Restaurant in Washington D.C.): This bottle left me perplexed as the initial nose was disagreeably musky. The palate was better and some of the initial nose blew off, but there was an impression of oxidation, rusty aspects to the palate as well. The body was there, there was substance and vinosity on the palate, but the flavors were somewhat past due or even a bit faulty, if not corked.

66 Bordeaux dinner (Ripple Restaurant in DC): Upon opening, some detected TCA like note. I often get this in mature Champagne, a bit dirty/mold like note but not TCA. The taint mostly dissipates with air. This seems a bit too advanced. Burnt Sugar, apple peel, honey and orange peel. Quite sweet, fully mature honey driven palate expression and medium finish. A bit too advanced.

Although an expensive champagne, I find it to be quite generic, especially for the price. I much prefer Drappier's Zero Dossage approach to traditional champagne making.

Drank to compare nose among various glasses (flute, Vinum Zin, Vinum Chard, Vinum PN. Vinum PN wins with Zin almost as good. Miss the bubbles of the flute. Anyway, classic Veuve Cliquot flavor profile, but glad I got such a good deal at World Market.
