2009 Villa Creek Mourvedre Damas Noir

Color: medium/deep ruby -> diffuse medium ruby rim. Lovely bouquet of black cherries, white pepper, sandalwood, gravel, a little cumin and forest floor. Like its '07 sibling, this is quite savory and reasonably full bodied while also showing nice purity of fruit and light on its feet due to great acidic cut. Mineral palate of Kirsch liqueur, sage, thyme and pencil shavings. Delicious now, this needed about a 60+ minute decant to strut its stuff. I think this is just a slight step behind the '07 in complexity but is still compelling juice. Once again, Cris has produced one of the best Mourvedres I've tasted from Cali.

Fantastic fruit after 45 min decant. Bright fruit flavors on balance with tannins. I expect this to get better and more complex over time.

Almost no nose - and what was there was not typical of cabernet. I was underwhelmed by its lack of varietal character and it was not anything more than pleasant to drink. Clearly a better cab than the average $20-30 Californian of this variety, but not something that I would buy again or cellar.

VA out in front with course tannin not far behind. Everything's pulling in different directions... seems to be coming apart at the seams (like many Paso 09's), though the VA could point to a flawed bottle. Decanted 2 hrs. Should have done so a couple of years ago.

Tasted with Chris and JoAnn at the fig in Sonoma. Loved the entire lineup, but this cuvee in particular blew me away. Probably the most impressive single varietal mourvedre I've encountered.

On the nose it's rich, deep, stinky, and sexy all at once, with plenty of fruit but also licorice, smoke, and earth. Villa Creek's high percentage stem inclusion in their wines makes me happy, and counterbalances Paso's tendency towards big, blown out fruit bombs with beautiful herbal (but not vegetal) aromatics. Palate follows in the same vein, full and complete with dark fruit, so much earth, light oak spice, and a surprisingly long finish for mourvedre that ends on cherry chocolate covered espresso beans. Wonderful.

Even better in a few years, absolutely drinkable now, but decant for sure if drinking now.

50% Grenache 50% Mourvedre; 14.3% alcohol -- all Denner Vineyard fruit.

Color: light/medium ruby core -> diffuse light ruby rim. Quite the alluring bouquet of black cherries, damp earth, tar, violets and sandalwood. This is showing tremendously well; tannins are completely resolved and the palate shows a succulent complexity that makes you want to quaff this without reflecting on its inherent quality and complexity. Black cherry fruit, smoke and forest floor along with a pumped-up midpalate and long finish provide for a compelling wine. Mourvedre shines here but the Grenache keeps it lithe and lively contributing wonderful acidity and high-toned fruit. Superbly balanced, this is for drinking now and well into the future. Love it!

Color: dark dark ruby core -> fairly dense ruby rim. Gorgeous bouquet of graphite, roasted cherries and a smokey, almost peaty earthiness. Palate is bright and lively with excellent acidity and showing off that pretty, roasted/grilled cherry fruit. This is a wonderful amalgam of the best of Syrah and Mourvedre showing off a little leather, gaminess and a good dollop of forest floor. Cris Cherry always seems to have a deft touch with Mourvedre and it shows very well here. Delicious now and well into the future, this is certainly worth a search to find.

Haven't been a big fan of Villa Creek but this bottle is the first step in changing my mind. Quite large, pitch dark coloring and viscous, had to brush my teeth twice. Flavor and finish pleasing to the palate and decent balance.

Under screwcap. This has aged beautifully. Was worried that this would be too big, but it is exceptionally well-balanced. A bit of barnyard/funk, brambly fruit, deep, complex, very long, complete finish. At $45 on release in 2006 this wasn't cheap, but I wish I had bought more.

Powerful red-fruit aroma, medium bodied, with moderate acidity and tannins, it has flavors of blackberry, red fruit, and some pepper, which was brought out in its excellent pairing with spicy lamb. Complex and flavorful but with only a medium finish.

At this stage, a little more mineral and spice driven and less dominated by fruit. But, still tasty to drink on a wed night, just not as impressive as my previous bottle. It is feeling a little bit more disjointed and clunkier than I remember, so I would recommend drinking this up. This bottle was screw top finished.
