Darker and more dense than most WS wines, which is fine with me. This wine has more years left.

I liked this bottle more than the prior one, especially on the second day. Decent balance for a Zin and good Zin type flavored and not too flamboyant. I like a leaner style but this was fun drinking.

had a little fun with this. I had both a WS and Merry Edwards 2010 Flax so I did a side by side blind tasting. for me I preferred the WS. it was a bit less sweet, had a more body and complexity. Im kind of glad because it was clearly the more expensive of the two wines. Not that the ME was bad by any stretch, but I think the WS was the clear winner.

Immediate tangy flavor after a brief decant. Very complex with numerous flavors smoothly coming in and out of prominence. Cola, black fruits, some earthiness and even floral notes were identifiable. Amazingly long and equally protean finish. Lots going on there.

This is a bit disjointed and the fruit has faded a bit. I did not get the "oak" that earlier reviews noticed. Perhaps it has integrated. The style is heavy, but not in a sweet, vanilla California style. I agree with the reviewers that this is expensive for what it is, and there are far better examples of Chardonnay for a lot less money. It is in the style of WS, and no other, and there are apparently enough people who like this style. The one bottle a year I get is interesting to taste for its novelty.

"legs" in this sense, is life of the wine. I'd say it is ending it's life soon.
The finish is not as good as it used to be.

Two years later, largely consistent with last bottle, however that much more mature. Somewhat more accessible, less cola and more graphite.

2012 Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Luella's Garden Estate Vineyard

Russian River Valley more

7/17/2015 - egh Likes this wine: 92 points

Tasting at Williams Selyem: Inaugural vintage/release of this bottling. Compared to the Block 10 which preceded it, the Luella's seems more generous and showy with notions of both black and red cherries along with purple flowers and spices. Like the Block 10 it is more medium than full bodied, but the structure of the Luella's doesn't clamp down on the finish to the same degree.

7/17/2015 - egh Likes this wine: 93 points

Tasting at Williams Selyem: There are 18 different clonal selections that comprise this bottling. A bit wound up and tightly coiled at this stage, with the wine's structure protruding just a bit. With that said, the refinement, quality, nascent complexity, and potential is already apparent. Offers up a profile of cooler dark red fruits, anise, and a bevvy of spices. Delicious, if a bit pricey (~$85). 93+ points.

Tasting at Williams Selyem: Smoother, rounder, richer, riper, warmer, and more approachable and showy than the other pinots poured during our tasting with a profile of juicy dark red fruits, sassafras, and rose petal. Still youthful, but seemingly a wine meant for more near to medium term consumption.

Tasting at Williams Selyem: Clean, crisp, fresh, lighter in body, and very approachable/easy drinking with an orchard and slightly tropical profile, along with a white flower/honeysuckle note. The quality and character of this wine becomes more apparent with each successive vintage.

7/23/2015 - McMalbec Likes this wine: 89 points

This was my first WS "Central Coast" so drank with no expectations from prior bottles other than other pinots by this company. Opened the wine about an hour before dinner. Modest, dark fruit nose but opened a bit more with time in the glass. Smooth, nicely balanced wine, with some cherry/strawberry on the palate. Did not exhibit the complexity of the winemaker's RRV varietal of the same vintage. Nice finish.

Reading some of the other posts, its pretty clear their are different strokes for different folks. Many recent notes say that the fruit is fading, but I think that is one of the reasons we enjoyed it. Clearly CA pinot, but not as big as many can be. The fruit is dark in tone more than red. Somewhat soft and silky, with some black tea, faint earth and bitter dark chocolate tones (Ann thought coffee?). Nothing really stands out and its not extremely complex but it is easy drinking. 14.1% alc. Perhaps a bit overpriced. Paired with grilled salmon.

Just ripe enough and not overly so, a bit of reduction still present. Lovely subtle berry flavors and developing secondary characteristics. A good counterpart to the 96 RSV and Ursules it paired against.

This is a very high end wine. Consumed as a perfect compliment to a delicious roast chicken dinner. We decanted the bottle one hour before the meal. It was beautiful (no pun intended) burgundy color. Medium bodied with a bouquet and complex finish of cherries, cinnamon, figs and dates. It actually needed some more time in the glass for the tannins to soften. It is probably a year or two from optimum drinking and definitely has much more life left to it than that. Easily the best Williams Selyem I've ever tasted and in the top three of all the pilots I've ever had. The only down side to the wine is that it is only available at the winery.
