I'm sad to say this has not aged as well as I'd have hoped. The first glasses (with dinner) had significant oxidative, dried fruit character. We walked the dogs and returned to finish the rest of the bottle and with just 90 minutes or so of exposure to air in the bottle the rest had really fallen off a cliff. I'd certainly say drink this one if you have it still, and probably under nitrogen or argon if you're not going to pour the whole bottle at once.

2013 Winderlea Pinot Noir Shea Vineyard

Just opened, and seems a little orange in color as if old, weak flavors, slightly sharp and alcoholic. I chose it because I have liked the shea vineyard pinots from penner ash, which are not available locally, but this has no resemblance at all to those rich wines. Of course the last 2013 shea I had fom Penner ash was also getting old, so maybe these oregon pinots have short legs. So far quite disappointing at $67, but will say more after giving it more airtime. I even feel a slight headache from this thin alcoholic wine, listed at only 13.5%.

Well we finished it, but it wasn't easy. It did become slightly smoother and richer with more time and air (i used an aerator) but I still felt I was drinking sweet vinegar. Even the currently boring $30 basic penner ash pinot would be more enjoyable than this. I had to add ice to my glass to make it through. I will not spend money on any winderlea again soon. I wish I had chosen the cheaper but likely better Ponzi.

added later: for comparison, my idea was to contrast an oregon pinot with a french one, a gevrey chambertin. I chose both to be from 2013 and both about $67, but I must say I don't like the french one much better, it's a Faively basic gevrey chambertin and has the same sour taste as the winderlea, and both seem old. So maybe 6 years is old for pinots. Neither is recommended unless you specifically like wine that tastes like sour tea, as some people apparently do.

The french one got somewhat better as we drank it, and we finished it more pleasantly than the winderlea, but it was still disappointing, especially at the price. Indeed the worst gevrey chambertin i recall having.

Sour raspberries on the palate. Some green tea notes. You can tell this was from a cool vintage as there isn't the nice round red berry fruits. Nice acidity. Medium finish.

Off the list at City Winery. Apple and smoky toasted almond, white fruit and something toasty I can’t quitr place. It’s not as toasty as my note makes it out to be, but the toasty quality is so unique and integrated that it stands out for not standing out.

Pinot in the City (Chicago, IL): Walk-around tasting, brief note. Aromatically bright and charming, then leaner on palate, so not quite persistent. Good now, but even better potential if this gets more harmonious.

A blend of Pommard, Wädenswil, Dijon 777 aged 10 months in French Oak of which 25% were new barrels. Just over 500 cases produced.
Decanted.
Always seductive, the Shea vineyard offers aromas of fresh picked cherry, crushed raspberry and pomegranate with touches of bergamot, citrus, rooibos, hibiscus, Himalayan pink salt and a hint of earth and bramble.
The palate offers full, silky-smooth textures, zesty acidity and fine moderate tannins. Enveloping the palate are the intense flavors of juicy raspberry, fresh red cherry, pomegranate, red tea, rose petal, citrus zest, rock and mineral that all linger through the elegant finish.
A precise Shea Vineyard Pinot Noir. 92/93

A blend of Pommard, Swan, Dijon 115, Clone 60 aged 10 months in 20% New French.
Allowed to breathe before note.
Bold scents show a mix of red, black and blue fruits; plum, cranberry, dark cherry, pomegranate and dried blueberry that come laced with scents of tea, bergamot, pencil shavings, bramble and flowers with definitive highlights of spice, earth and rock.
Layers upon layers on the palate. Well structured with above moderate acidity and crunchy tannin. Deeply penetrating flavors of dark cherry, blueberry, pomegranate and plum interweave with notes of bergamot, tea, edible flowers, bramble, spice, rock and pencil. Long and persistent on the finish. 92/93

With air time, this opens to show notes of crushed raspberry, pomegranate, and red cherry that integrate notes of cocoa, rose petal, orchard blossoms, graphite pencil, cigar box and hints of grapefruit zest.
The palate is inviting and easy with soft tannins, juicy berry like acidity and suave textures. Flavors of fresh picked raspberry, red cherries, pomegranate and exotic citrus mingle with floral notes of rose petal and red tea with hints of cocoa, spice and tobacco. The finish is smooth and moderate.

Deep, lush and full-bodied Pinot Noir from Dundee Hills. There were aromas of red cherries, vanilla bean and liquorice, the palate was composed of soft red fruits, with characteristics of bright tart red cherries, cola fresh herbs along with a soft, delicate and creamy finish. Has this peaked? Drink now.

About the same as I remember it: fairly big in style, dark cherry, fair to good balance, medium long finish. I liked it but think the price was a bit high at $51 US. Served with coho salmon and grilled veg: it held up well to all the food and goes well with salmon. Drink or hold.

Begeistern eher weniger ...

Surprisingly translucent, nuanced and ready-to-drink Pinot at its young age. Expressive red and blue fruits with a touch of sweetness and earth. Very approachable now and ready to drink, dispute the CellarTracker drink dates.

One of my favorite Winderlea bottles of recent. For some reason, many other bottles from several vintages have been closed down or too simple. Not this one. Big, round, lush; it felt like velvet in my mouth.

Great spice including a wonderful note of cinnamon. Definitely a warmer vintage, but Robert Brittain (winemaker) and Bill and Donna have created a wonderful wine with this bottling. Drinking beautifully now.

Opened about 30min before consuming. Well balanced with strawberry and cherry fruit but not overwhelming. A bit "stemmy" and surprising strong tannins with a mid to long finish. With the mild fruit showing not sure how much longer this one has, I will be drinking my other bottle soon.

Not much going on till it warmed to room temperature and opened up. Was much better within 1 hour. First notes were strawberry which transitioned to light berry and faint cherry cola. Slight tea was expressed when it fully opened. Nice true to Oregon representation of pinot and 90 point rating takes price into consideration.

Strawberry on the nose and in the mouth; moving from underripe to ripe and back as it moves into the nice pop of acidity on the finish. Earth and toffee notes in the background along the way. YUM. Another great example of the initially-awful, long-term wonderful summer-without-a-summer 2011.
