2012 Tablas Creek Viognier

Paso Robles more

9/2/2014 - TSBWine Likes this wine: 90 points

90 Points. Serially tasted over 2 hours. Served between 58-62F.

Ripe mangoes and spice on the nose. On the palate, lemon curd, citrus peel, white flowers and spice with an impressive cut of minerality to clean the palate. Over time some white peach and green herbs show on the palate, although it remains driven by citrus notes.

Overall, there's good intensity and length on the palate although a bit more monochromatic than previous vintages. Texturally, this seems far less round than other Central Coast Viognier, but there's still plenty of weight and density here.

A Labor Day patio sipper that then carried over to accompany Capresi Salad. The color of sun-bleached hay with nondescript legs and a shy bouquet. The action is on the palate with a kaleidoscope of zesty citrus and apple/pear elements interspersed with fresh-roasted nuts and brookside minerals. Great viscosity, yet it still dances on the tongue and offers a finish that begs for another sip. Picks up some heat here and there (I would have guessed a higher abv than the 13.5% listed), which keeps me from rating this higher. But it's delicious. Drink up!

Delightful Mourvèdre. Good mellowed tannins, sufficient to cleanse your palate for your next bite of steak. No real tertiary nuances at this point, I am not sure what the future hold but I have many more bottles to figure it out. This is my first. I generally like my Mourvèdre a few years older.

I found this imposing but lacking the depth or interest I would expect from a similarly priced Southern Rhone. Not bad though.

Décanté et carafé à peine 15 minutes avant consommation.
Apparence rouge grenat, disque brique.

In the somewhat closed bouquet dark fruits, graphite and a bit dust. On the palate cherries, dark chocolate, some green herbs and sweetness, good acidity and bitterness. The tannin is round. First signs of development are there. Early maturity now and I expect it will show more 5 years from now.

Ok, no rose can really be 94 points. But I rated this comparing it to other roses, and I drink a lot of them. I have tasted most of the roses produced in Bandol and many from Provence in general and Tavel. Oh and a few Cali attempts. This one has it all going on. I need to order more ASAP as it can last a few years. Great balance and back end grip. Great with many summer food dishes. Bravo Tablas Creek.

Great QPR. Very well balanced and drank well on its own, but went fairly well with food too.
Earthy for a white, with herbal and stone fruit aromas.

Me - 89, Wife - 90-91.

Light green apple nose. Medium weight with nice texture/mouthfeel. Some stone fruit and honey along with some minerality, but finishes with some bitter notes. Worked fine with smoked salmon and Le Tur cheese appetizers, but not a winner with the group. Greatest interest is for the varietal characteristics - takes you to the Rhone valley.

Long one of my favorite vintages, the floral character on a mineral base just keeps getting better and better. Well integrated, nice backbone, short finish considering.

After being disappointed with two Napa cabs 9-10 years old, I opened this one and it was perfect! With grilled bison flank steak, grilled corn on cob, and grilled peppers, it was perfect.

At cellar temperature: Golden colour, a nose of almond flour, white tea, some butterscotch. Rich texture, acidity is there, but the wine feels too oily (even for the white rhone varietals) and less fresh than I would like. Some tropical fruit. Short finish. Not bad at all, and it has varietal character, and, truthfully, it goes down quite easily, but not worth the price and not very interesting. (85)

After decanting and chilling in the fridge for a couple of hours, the freshness comes out and sharpens my senses as well as the green papaya deliciousness that was hidden beneath the wax paper and honey cheerios at warmer temp. Now, we're talking! And the spices and the bitter almond marzipan bite at the end. Groovy stuff. (91)

CdP from the Central Coast. Complex, round and fresh. The wine is a seductive blend of Mourvedre, Syrah and Grenache that has muscle yet delicate notes of orange peel and smokey red fruits. Best wine of a great tasting.
