2006 Francis Boulard Champagne Millésime Extra Brut

Champagne Blend more

All flavor elements here are nuanced. Very dry and subtle in apple, artichoke, bread crumbs, chalk powder, and white pepper notes, it is a fine vintage Champagne.

2013 Lucien Crochet Sancerre La Croix du Roy

Sauvignon Blanc more

7/29/2015 - Number51 wrote: NR

I enjoyed this, but I'm not blown away like I was with 2008 vintage of this wine. I must say my expectation was very high.
This vintage also has some richness for a Sancerre standard. Somehow, the flavor profile doesn't seem all that complex.
A good enjoyable wine, however.

2013 Domaine Grand Freres Trousseau Côtes du Jura

more

7/27/2015 - Number51 wrote: 89 points

Borderline rose translucency, high toned red fruit, and steely acidity portray this red Jura, 100% Trousseau, which varietal, according to Wikipedia, is also known as Bastardo.
As the color and transparency suggest, this can substitute for a rose at a dinner table. Tannin structure is close to non-existent, and the flavors consist of cranberry, red apple, strawberry jello, and fresh parsley.
12.5% alc. Purchased at $17.

2008 Conti Sertoli Salis Baccalitt Terrazze Retiche di Sondrio IGT

Nebbiolo Blend, Nebbiolo more

7/19/2015 - Number51 wrote: 91 points

Translucent and seemingly light with fine velvety tannins, this exotic blend of Nebbiolo and Pinot Nero manages to show some weight at only 12.5% alc. Aromatics are very pretty. Cherries, raspberries, lavender, licorice, and rosemary notes take shape in the glass. It is a ludicrous value at $16. 91+ points.

2010 Boccadigabbia Rosso Piceno

Sangiovese Blend, Sangiovese more

7/18/2015 - Number51 wrote: 90 points

On the first day, dry tannins presented a slight bitterness, which got me worried a bit. After two glasses, cork was put back in, and the bottle rested for a full day. Now, the wine is pleasantly dry with rustic Italian old school flavors. Mud, blackberries, tobacco, herbs, and menthol notes come through. Although the tannins have softened with a full day of in-bottle oxidation, there is a persistent grip that constantly reminds you how dry this is. The tannin structure sure flexes some muscles here.

2013 Veramonte Primus The Blend

Colchagua Valley Red Blend more

7/12/2015 - Number51 wrote: NR

Primus offers a reliable and consistent quality throughout vintages. Trying this after almost 3 years, I realize that my palate has moved away even farther from this style of wine; it is too oaky, cinnamon-cream-puffy, and manipulated for my taste. However, I can see how it may appeal to the crowd as it has that "smooth" factor. To me, this tastes like a chocolate and vanilla milk shake.
If you enjoy oaky California reds (Sebastiani comes to mind), you may like this wine. Given the style and right expectations, it is a good value.

2008 Michel Gahier Chardonnay Arbois La Fauquette

more

7/11/2015 - Number51 wrote: 91 points

In the bouquet, long aging in wood is apparent, not in a vanilla, oaky, creamy way, but in an oxidized over a long time in a used barrel way, somewhat comparable to that of an old Scotch whisky aged in used Bourbon barrels.
Tropical fruits and banana nut bread components elevate the delicious factor, then there is that searing acidity, which to some extent gets buffered by the textural oiliness.
This sure scratches that wine-geek-itch, and it is very complex in flavors. But, it probably isn’t the right bottle to open for your “non-wino” friends or a poolside party.
It paired quite well with spicy mayo salmon rolls.

I'm not sure what else I could ask for from a wine at $10. This is fantastic, really. A perfect Wednesday wine it is.
It is dry with blueberries, roasted meat, soy sauce, blood, and minerals. It is a real wine - no wood chips vanilla sugared fake stuff.
I'll be buying more, and I recommend it.

2005 Château Plince

Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend more

7/3/2015 - Number51 wrote: NR

2005 Chateau Plince is dark and smoky with tobacco leaves, black pepper, and cherry juice. Good dose of acidity and low alcohol (13% on the label) give it brightness and a charming personality. This was fantastic after 30 minutes (91 points quality), but it became weak and skim-milky with another 30 minutes after that. (87 points quality)
I don’t think this should be decanted. It was somewhat drinkable on the second day, but if you can, finish it on the first day.

2009 Domaine Durand Cornas Premices

Syrah more

6/28/2015 - Number51 wrote: 91 points

Clean and pure fruited without the animal funk that often comes into play in wines of Cornas, 2009 Premices is easy-to-like and even approachable to new world wine drinkers. Purity and style here remind me of some 2009 Cru Beaujolais; fruit is rich yet light in body, and oak is unnoticeable although it isn't completely absent.
Strawberries, blueberries, fresh herbs, jello, and subtle chocolate flavors are backed by bright acidity. It is enjoyable with and without food.

2003 Château Quinault L'Enclos

St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend more

6/26/2015 - Number51 wrote: 90 points

This is a pleasant right-bank with dark fruit driven flavor profile: plums and blackberries. With aeration, mocha note emerges and takes the center stage. There is some spiciness that adds to the wine’s savoriness, and the finish is decent. Given the age, this is surprisingly fresh.

2008 Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits St. Georges

Pinot Noir more

6/24/2015 - Number51 wrote: 93 points

Classic in every way with rhubarb, cranberries, strawberries, pepper, string beans, and soil, this is another home run from Domaine Henri Gouges. Light on its feet with lots of little flavors, it exhibits a great complexity from the nose to the palate. There is a bit of hay note on the finish that grips onto the palate. This wine never loses its focus while being wildly complex.
This would be a great food wine. I wish I bought a case.

2011 Domaine du Pégaü Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée

Red Rhone Blend more

6/9/2015 - Number51 wrote: 93 points

Initial acidic edge dissipates within 15 minutes. Then classic Pegau characteristics shine through. Dark fruits show weight without heaviness, and a complex array of graphite, licorice, Earl Grey tea, and fresh herbs is backed by sweet tannins.
Compared to other vintages that I have tried, 2006 and 2010, animalistic components (gaminess and blood) are not as pronounced in this vintage. 2011 bursts with flowers. It is insanely floral, no less. In that sense, it is prettier than 2006 and 2010, but is perhaps less intriguing and less thought provoking.
To summarize, I must say this is darn delicious. God bless Domaine du Pegau.

2010 Domaine Tortochot Gevrey-Chambertin Les Corvées

Pinot Noir more

6/5/2015 - Number51 wrote: 90 points

If served blind, I may have misidentified this as a Northern Rhone. With wild animal fur and chicken feather notes on the nose, it is very old world in style. Palate is crisp and light with cranberries, gooseberries, cabbage, game, and gentle spices.
This would be great with white meat dishes. It is a wine with high acidity and some austerity. It’s not for everyone.

This paired well with a salmon dish.

2012 Marc Plouzeau Chinon Les Cornuelles Vieille Vigne

Cabernet Franc more

5/27/2015 - Number51 wrote: 89 points

Sour on the nose, and followed by broccoli, sour cranberries, cherries, herb salad, black pepper, and citrus peel on the palate, this has a singular flavor profile while retaining the classic Chinon characteristics.
Dark chocolate note becomes more pronounced as the wine breathes, and the fine cocoa powder-like texture elevates that chocolatiness.
It is dry. You have to like Chinon to like this though. 13% alc.

5/25/2015 - Number51 wrote: 90 points

With aeration for an hour, this opens up with honey, fresh herbs, crushed rocks, flint, hay, and white flowers. For my expectations from a Muscadet, this has a surprisingly good weight. It has a sweet honey note on the entry, but it is fabulously well balanced with crisp acidity.
This needs aeration to show its true potential.

2009 Bodega Flechas de Los Andes Malbec Gran Malbec

Mendoza more

5/23/2015 - Number51 wrote: 88 points

This seemed a bit too syrupy right out of the bottle - I often find this trait in Argentinian Malbec, which made it difficult for me to keep purchasing in this category. This Malbec was sweet, simple, and somewhat pleasing. 24 hours later, syrupiness calmed down a bit, and the overall balance improved.
Ripe blackberry juice, licorice, and fresh herbs notes make up this very low acidity red.
This goes very well with cheese, sort of like how port goes well with cheese. Purchased at $14 with free shipping.

Classic Northern Rhone stinkiness (not too much) on the nose is inviting. It has pleasant dryness and good acidity with high toned blackberries, game, and gentle curry spices. Really light on its feet, this should be great with food. It is old world in style.
