2015 The Alchemist Heady-Topper

Vermont Malt more

2/3/2016 - Number51 wrote: NR

I used to say IPA just isn't for me; I always felt that it's just too heavy for my palate. If you're one of those people, you probably haven't tried a real good (double) IPA yet, like this one, Heady Topper, an elixir, a beverage that will bring identity crisis to winos and confuse the hell out of them.
Quite frankly, I can no longer say that grapes are superior to malted barley and hops.
Super floral, freakishly complex, never heavy, worth every penny to make an yearly trip to Vermont as I plan to, this can in front of me bursts with pine, bittersweet flowers, full throttle ripe blood oranges, tomato skin, and sour dough bread.
I don't recommend dumping the whole can into a beer glass, but it's totally fine (perhaps better) if you were to pour this little by little into a Zalto Universal. Drinking straight out of the can seems fine to me.
Thank you, Mr Kimmich.

This is a real gem. It is rich and chalky with marmalade, lemon bitters, bee pollen, and acacia notes. It's still very tasty on this fifth day. There is some sort of grip that feels like tannins.

2011 Tiefenbrunner Lagrein Alto Adige - Südtirol Linticlarus Riserva

11/27/2015 - Number51 wrote: 92 points

Glass-stainingly dark in color, this is some special juice that is dark fruits oriented. It is rich, tannic, bold, and perhaps much extracted; it appears bit modern in style. Dark plums, licorice, blackberries, black cherries, and eucalyptus notes are balanced out by marmalade-like acidity. It is quite bombastic and would pair well with a steak.

My prior bottle was a decent value like an 87 point wine. This second bottle is showing really well like an 89 point wine.
Pleasantly ripe dark fruit, herbs, peat, chalk, and mustard flavors shine through in this great QPR. Its co-existing ripeness and earthiness makes it approachable for a broad audience.

9/11/2015 - Number51 wrote: NR

2013 Saurus appeared simple at first, but with aeration, it gained some extra dimensions. Dark fruited, smoky, caramelized, and not too oaky, it is as good as it gets for a pinot noir at $15.
It comes across as a new world pinot to me, but the amount of syrup is well under control.

2013 Wyatt Pinot Noir

9/6/2015 - Number51 wrote: 87 points

Ripe cherries, cola, gentle spices, and kirsch notes are pleasant. For my taste, cola flavor is overwhelming and there isn’t enough acidity, yet it’s got some good clean fruit. Even after hours of aeration, the wine didn’t fall apart. Given that some shops sell this at $12, it is a very good value for a Pinot Noir. Wyatt again proves that it is a reliable brand, both for Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon, which are the two varieties that I have tried for several vintages. 87+ points.

At first, this Barbera d’Alba appears simple and light with cherries, blueberries, and a touch of Grand Marnier in its flavors. With aeration, seaweed-like oceany note emerges and stays at the fore. I'd prefer that seaweed note to be more subtle.
I liked it a lot more during the first 30 minutes.

This is my third time trying, and the experience has been fairly consistent. Very rich and bright, definitely new world, and caramelized ripe dark fruit-driven, 2010 Gunselman Bench Vineyard is a home run.
Not a philosopher's wine, yet its deliciousness makes you think about how good a wine can be and that it's not about style; it's about quality.
This would be amazing with a steak.

This vintage also has some richness for a Sancerre standard. Somehow, the flavor profile doesn't seem all that complex.
A good enjoyable wine, however.

Borderline rose translucency, high toned red fruit, and steely acidity portray this red Jura, 100% Trousseau, which varietal, according to Wikipedia, is also known as Bastardo.
As the color and transparency suggest, this can substitute for a rose at a dinner table. Tannin structure is close to non-existent, and the flavors consist of cranberry, red apple, strawberry jello, and fresh parsley.
12.5% alc. Purchased at $17.

7/18/2015 - Number51 wrote: 90 points

On the first day, dry tannins presented a slight bitterness, which got me worried a bit. After two glasses, cork was put back in, and the bottle rested for a full day. Now, the wine is pleasantly dry with rustic Italian old school flavors. Mud, blackberries, tobacco, herbs, and menthol notes come through. Although the tannins have softened with a full day of in-bottle oxidation, there is a persistent grip that constantly reminds you how dry this is. The tannin structure sure flexes some muscles here.

2013 Veramonte Primus The Blend

Colchagua Valley Red Bordeaux Blend more

7/12/2015 - Number51 wrote: NR

Primus offers a reliable and consistent quality throughout vintages. Trying this after almost 3 years, I realize that my palate has moved away even farther from this style of wine; it is too oaky, cinnamon-cream-puffy, and manipulated for my taste. However, I can see how it may appeal to the crowd as it has that "smooth" factor. To me, this tastes like a chocolate and vanilla milk shake.
If you enjoy oaky California reds (Sebastiani comes to mind), you may like this wine. Given the style and right expectations, it is a good value.

2008 Michel Gahier Chardonnay Arbois La Fauquette

more

7/11/2015 - Number51 wrote: 91 points

In the bouquet, long aging in wood is apparent, not in a vanilla, oaky, creamy way, but in an oxidized over a long time in a used barrel way, somewhat comparable to that of an old Scotch whisky aged in used Bourbon barrels.
Tropical fruits and banana nut bread components elevate the delicious factor, then there is that searing acidity, which to some extent gets buffered by the textural oiliness.
This sure scratches that wine-geek-itch, and it is very complex in flavors. But, it probably isn’t the right bottle to open for your “non-wino” friends or a poolside party.
It paired quite well with spicy mayo salmon rolls.
