Another beautiful showing. The wine is really in a good place right now. Integrated and showing lush red fruit with a hint of black to it, some herb, but more tobacco at this stage with a hit of mineral. At peak, but no worries about holding longer. Solid A-.

Showed beautiful color and a fill into the neck. Mostly musty barrels and mushrooms from the start and rather thin. Took 2 1/2 hours for the wine to start to show up. Still some mustiness throughout, but some decent red fruit emerged and the wine smoothed out and got a little silky. A little bit of coffee and fig to go with cherries and old wood spice. More intellectually satisfying than anything else, but food helped it and, overall, it's pretty giving for an almost 60 year old wine. B-.

A most gulpable quaff at this stage. Round and harmonious with ripe, sappy (seems to be the word of the hour) red fruit. Enough acidic kick to keep things lively, but purists may find it a little too soft for them. Just a hint of mineral as this bottle is fruit driven. More wines should be as enjoyable as this was. A-.

Deep yellow in color and while there's still plenty of quince and mineral flavors and aromas to enjoy, this bottle lacks some of the freshness other bottles have shown. Lightly oxidative with solid acidity and just a bit of sweetness. B+.

Still open and showing beautifully, though it needed more coaxing with air than in the past. The fruit is a little less yellow and showing more of a tropical edge to it. Typically snappy, vivacious and long. Electric stuff. A.

Beautiful color, fruit and vitality. Showed red fruit, blood, spicy cedar, citrus and a bit of baked clay on the nose and palate. Closed up a bit and started to dry out on the finish a little after 45 minutes or so, but opened up and smoothed out another hour or so after that. Medium bodied with nice acid levels. A lovely showing, though maybe a tad less complete than a bottle tried last summer. Low A-.

Deep gold in color, it's at the age where, while still young, it's shifting to the next, more mature phase of its life. The fruit is not as sweet or primary as it was even a few years ago. Plenty of botrytis on the nose and palate with a hint of shoe polish. Yellow fruits are shifting more to the apricot spectrum. There's a touch of earl grey tea and plenty of minerality. With much of the baby fat gone, the acids are much more apparent than they were in its youth. Lovely wine. Solid A-.

Showed typically and perhaps a bit more fruit forward than the last bottle I had. Blue fruits, plenty of lavender and violets with game and spice notes. Still showing some tannic strength with the wood still needing a bit more integration, though I bet it would have smoothed out if we gave it more air. Delicious. A-

9/8/2013 - BradKNYC wrote: NR

Deep gold in color, it starts off with oxidized aromas of apples and toasted nuts, but there's also some quince paste and bergamot on the nose. 1970 wasn't the greatest vintage in the Loire and the wine is rather sharp and ungenerous. It's much drier than the demi-sec designation would have you believe at this stage, though with air it did round out some. It tastes old with oxidized notes, quince paste, dried apricot, cooked apples, nuts and earl grey tea. Interesting to try, but not particularly pleasant, though cheese did help it. C+ with the cheese and a C/C- on its own.

1969 Domaine Huet Vouvray Moelleux Clos du Bourg

David Goldfarb called me over in the afternoon spur of the moment to share this bottle to see how it was given my comments to him recently that all my experiences with '69s, dating back to my first one around '98 or '99, revealed a rather appley and oxidative wine across both Demi-Secs and Moelleux from both Le Mont and Clos du Bourg. Well, David's had his bottle stored longer than all but one of the bottles I'd previously tried and, indeed, this bottle lacked the intense oxidative and baked apple character of most of those have shown. Aromatically, the wine didn't thrill me. It lacked fruit, aside from a little bit of appleliness, and was dominated by earth aromas, but lacked freshness. On the palate, it was a interesting roller coaster of a ride that lasted about two hours. Neither David nor I were particularly impressed with the wine from the get go as it was unfocused, plump and showed its sugar easily. However, after spending a bit more time in the decanter, the wine came into focus with the acidity brightening up and the sweetness moving more into the Demi-Sec range. Pleasant apple, persimmon and peanut flavors emerged with nice earthiness. About an hour or so in, the wine momentarily took off. There was a terrific intensity to it, the sweetness moved back into the Moelleux range, the fruit was vibrant. Just clicking on all cylinders. However, that high lasted only about twenty minutes before the wine visibly aged in the mouth. The fruit receded, earth notes started to dominate with a light bitter note and the finish dropped off. At its peak, I'd call it an A-/B+. Overall, though, I think the wine is definitely showing its age and is a bit tired, so call it a Low B+. It was fun to chart the wine's ups and downs over two hours, though. Most informative.

Bordeaux, Burgs and Piedmont as Barry Lipton visits NYC. (Il Corso.): Josh brought this as backup bottle. Recently purchased from a store on the West Coast that brought it in, it looks like it had been recorked not too long ago and, given the high fill, was probably topped off. Shows an interesting and not unpleasant nose of cow manure, (in a good, earthy/grassy and natural sense) blood, tobacco and earth. Not at all generous on the palate. In fact, the acidity is sharp and unpleasant. Iron shavings, leather, smoked meat and blood upfront and short and citrusy on the back. Interesting, but not particularly pleasant at all. C/C-.

Bordeaux, Burgs and Piedmont as Barry Lipton visits NYC. (Il Corso.): Plenty of black earth aromas with rich, black and red fruit, licorice and spice. Surprisingly rich and sweet black fruit that's pretty forward at this stage, though the wine still exhibits primary characteristics. The fruit continued to blossom with air and, as on the nose, also showed licorice, earth and spice. Quite a sexy wine with much more development ahead. Solid A-.

Bordeaux, Burgs and Piedmont as Barry Lipton visits NYC. (Il Corso.): Shows a lot of meat and blood on the nose with red cherry, spice and dried flowers. Lots of acidity present and the wine's rather austere. Not a ton of fruit here, though the pasta dish with speck and porcinis really did sweeten the fruit up nicely. Dried cherries with rust, earth, leather and spice. I'd drink up as it feels like it's starting to dry out. B+.

Bordeaux, Burgs and Piedmont as Barry Lipton visits NYC. (Il Corso.): I've found most of the '95s I've had recently still rather hard and in need of more time, but I'd seen reports that this was drinking surprisingly well, so I figured it was time to check up on it. It shows a classic Bordeaux nose of black cherry, currants, cedar, light smoke notes, herbs and earth. On the palate it's surprisingly lush and fruit forward at the get go. There's a thickness in texture and a rich, sweet and friendly quality to the red fruit that's delicious, but there's also a powerful back end to the wine that sports some firm tannins that grew in prominence as the evening wore on and picked up more of an herb character. Still on the upswing, imo. Doesn't quite have the depth of the '89 or '90, but this is a terrific wine. Solid A-.

Terrific acidic structure and a few of us commented that this seemed the equivalent sweetness of some of today's demi-secs. Beautiful. Solid A-.

(Suzanne & Kenny's): Plenty of smoked meat and bacon goodness to be had, with aged black and red brambly fruit, garrigue and olives. While the tannins have softened, there's still nice acidic lift here that keeps the wine from showing just a bit too tired, though it's certainly on the back end of peak. It delivers just what you want out of nicely aged Northern Rhone Syrah. A-/B+.
