2012 Guillaume Gilles Côtes du Rhône Les Peyrouses

Syrah more

5/20/2015 - Billigan Likes this wine: NR

Forgot to record this one back in May, but I recall enjoying its floral flamboyance on the nose and rich-yet-fresh fruit. Nothing screamed "baby Cornas" to me here, but it was a pleasure nonetheless. Need to go back to the well on this one.

1995 Chateau Musar Blanc

Bekaa Valley White Blend more

6/27/2015 - Billigan Likes this wine: 96 points

My first Musar Blanc, and it was a doozy. Cork slid out with too much ease, which along with the (lovely) copper hue, made me a bit worried about the vitality of this not-very-white wine. But oh boy, after an hour, this breathed up into something beautiful. Gorgeous aroma of marconas, cardamom, vanilla, and jasmin followed by a still-fresh palate with flavors of orange peels, nuts, a touch of caramel, botrytis spice, and a mouth coating salinity that seemed to chisel the whole kaledescope into your cheeks. As sui generis a white as Musar's reds and perhaps even more so. Splendid.

2011 François Chidaine Vouvray Clos Baudoin

Chenin Blanc more

6/13/2015 - Billigan Likes this wine: 92 points

Absolutely superb. Its fruit is lean and citric, putting the focus squarely on the crackling, tactile minerality that basically coats your palate in chalk, leaving you thirsting for another sip. Puts mouth-watering refreshment in a complex, compelling package.

2011 Jean Foillard Morgon Cuvée Corcelette

Gamay more

6/13/2015 - Billigan Likes this wine: 92 points

Consistent with previous notes. The Corcelette has all the charms of Foillard's other bottlings, but with an accessible quality than the more structured Cote du Py. Ready to drink anytime, but no harm in holding a few more years to see what other elements emerge.

1996 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more

6/12/2015 - Billigan Likes this wine: 93 points

Classic Pauillac fragrance, tannins rounded and mostly integrated, and just perfect with a medium-rare steak. As lovely as this was, I didn't see the structure for exceptionally long aging here. It's really in the zone right now.

2013 Alfred Merkelbach Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Kabinett #6

Mosel Saar Ruwer more

5/28/2015 - Billigan Likes this wine: NR

No detailed notes, but this was showing its typical quality. Lots of green apple fruit and pronounced acidity (but this isn't 2010 territory). Great QPR as usual but will undoubtedly have much more to give with a few years on its side.

2010 Ridge Lytton Springs

Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel Blend, Zinfandel more

5/31/2015 - Billigan Likes this wine: 91 points

Perfect with grilled steaks, this showed the typical Ridge balance and freshness to go with the alluring spice on the nose and lush, berry fruits. This has relaxed a good bit since release, but there's plenty of good structure for this to go many miles more.

1975 Moulin Touchais Coteaux du Layon

Chenin Blanc more

5/24/2015 - Billigan Likes this wine: 93 points

Beautiful nose of orange peel, honey, and potpourri. Incredibly youthful and vivacious on the palate, with fresh orange and caramel flavors and an almost-juicy finish. While it lacks a good bit in richness or weight, it compensates well with good precision and freshness. Were it not for that amber color, I would scarcely have believe this was forty years old. Lovely.

2002 Jean Boillot & Fils Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Mouchère

Chardonnay more

5/23/2015 - Billigan Likes this wine: 90 points

Balanced, mid-weight Burg, with a light, citrus fruit profile and still-prominent but unobtrusive oak aromas and flavors. Good depth and a silky mouthfeel make this a very pleasant, if not especially memorable, companion to a seafood dinner.

2005 Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spätlese #7

Mosel Saar Ruwer more

5/17/2015 - Billigan Likes this wine: NR

A stellar repeat performance. It's definitely a low-acid rendition, but the gorgeous flamboyance of the nose and the silky sweetness on the palate pushed aside my usual preference for more taut and racy riesling.

2012 Ridge Lytton Springs

Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel Blend, Zinfandel more

5/14/2015 - Billigan Likes this wine: NR

Loads of potential here. Classic aromas of crushed raspberries, cracked pepper, coal dust, and a touch of vanilla. Oak is restrained, alcohol in check, and plenty of acidity and gentle tannin to give it the backbone for long aging.

2012 Rhys Pinot Noir Horseshoe Vineyard

Santa Cruz Mountains more

5/2/2015 - Billigan Likes this wine: NR

Easily the most approachable young Rhys I've had to date. Very little of the stem-based structure (and greenish notes) I typically pick up early with these wines, and in this case, that's a good thing. Really lovely floral and spicy notes on the nose and ample, easy-going fruit on the palate, but nothing especially plush, and the wine finished with a nice, lip-smacking touch of minerality and acidity that really balanced it out perfectly. Can't wait to try again in a few years!

Elegant, with nice aromas of baking spices, rose petals, and pine. Very light and a little straightforward on the palate. Showed much better on day two, so perhaps hold your bottles for a bit.

2011 Alain Voge Cornas Vieilles Vignes

Syrah more

4/19/2015 - Billigan Likes this wine: NR

A striking wine that departed from my usual experience with Cornas, and in a good way. Polished, elegant, and suave with a gorgeous, floral nose, and medium bodied, red-fruited palate that was almost shockingly open, but still had plenty of structure to improve over the next several years. Very little of the meat or olive savoriness or rustic firmness I was expecting, but still squarely in the profile of a Northern Rhone syrah of exceptional quality.

Spicy, floral, and musky perfume just bowled me over. Rich, suave, and more dark-fruited than I think I've ever seen in Beaujolais. Truly sui generis gamay.

2013 Peter Lauer Ayler Kupp Riesling Senior Faß 6

Mosel Saar Ruwer more

4/12/2015 - Billigan Likes this wine: 92 points

Unmistakably Lauer, this is just electric with energy and tension. As opposed to say, the 2009, the fruit isn't luscious here, but it's in no way a lean wine. The acid just frames the fruit perfectly. For less than $30, I know of few better wines, year over year.

Punching way above its weight, with a sappy goodness from the vintage, but plenty of mineral and forest floor action to keep this squarely in the Burgundy profile.

Great QPR from Roagna, as I've come to expect each year. Floral and dusty on the nose, with a nice bitterness and grit on the palate.

2011 Domaine Léon Barral Faugères

Grenache Blend, Grenache more

3/29/2015 - Billigan Does not like this wine: 80 points

My least favorite Barral to date. Funky barnyard, sweat, and crushed berries, and black pepper on the nose, and a similarly wild and spicy flavor on the palate. At first, this was all very compelling, but with the air, it seemed to lose steam and then just fell apart into a funky and stewed mess. I'm not sure if it's a low-sulphur treatment gone bad or what, because this wine usually shines for me. Really disappointing.

2005 Schäfer-Fröhlich Bockenauer Felseneck Riesling Spätlese

3/27/2015 - Billigan Likes this wine: 94 points

These 2005 spats are really great. A really lovely blend of tropical and floral aromas and rich fruit on the palate, but with a surprising dollop of acidic zip to give the wine freshness and verve. Absolutely beautiful way to take the best qualities of the vintage, while preserving the hallmark minerality and tension of truly great riesling.

1986 Château Gruaud Larose

St. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend more

3/14/2015 - Billigan Likes this wine: 96 points

A stunning wine and proof positive that the "forever-burly" 1986s are really hitting their stride. After an 8-hour Audouze, this was humming. A knockout perfume full of cassis, turned earth, smoke, and leather. An exceptionally balanced-but-richly-fruited palate, with the tannins perfectly integrated. No, this isn't some powerhouse heavyweight, but it is an exceptional middleweight that truly shows the best of what Bordeaux is all about.

Absolutely on point. Slight metallic note on opening was gone by the time this was served a few hours later. Rich, mature fruits with layers of apricot, orange, caramel, and botrytis spice. Gorgeous.
