There is a nice dash of citrus fruit on the nose - predominantly grapefruit and a firm stone fruit backdrop. The palette is crisp and racy with some minerality kicking in on the mid-palette and a nice fresh fruit and cut grass finish.

Quite a dense nose of delicate phosphorus from the oak, some pear skin and aromatic florals with a firm and bright palette of spicy, metallic minerals and bitter white peach finish. Good value.

2012 Happs Fuchsia

Margaret River Rosé Blend more

3/2/2015 - AlexGarner Likes this wine: 93 points

This is really interesting, with a very sweet, pink fruit, floral and confectionary nose that does not hint at the beautiful savouries that hide in the palette.

It starts out quite spritzy and then moves a nice balance of residual sugar and powerful acidity which gives way to a funky undergrowth and barnyard mid-palette.

The finish has an interesting lick of minerals and is very long with a sweet note.

This is more than just a standard, warm-weather, easy-drinking rosé with lots to please the serious rose drinker as well. I really, really like this.

2011 Cracroft Chase Pinot Gris Blue Sun

Canterbury more

3/1/2015 - AlexGarner Likes this wine: NR

The last time I looked at this was the 2009 when it was 3+ years old. This time around, the wine is again around 3-4 years old, and I can see why they are released a little later - I could see this being a little to austere and closed when young.

The nose is an immediate hit of spices and florals - nutmeg and jasmine - but there is some nice balancing fruit underneath it all and that comes through in the palette, with ripe pears and white peaches.

But pretty soon it all goes up a notch, with some powerful forward minerals and a great, banging acidity on the mid palette with the minerals coming back through again for the quite long finish.

This wine really delivers for the price - I would recommend grabbing a few, as this will probably develop really well over the next 5+ years given how much mouth-filling activity this wine is showing.

NV Patritti Dover

Adelaide Hills Pinot Blend, Pinot Noir more

2/21/2015 - AlexGarner Likes this wine: 92 points

The nose has a nice yellow fruit profile with some balancing biscuit and a touch of citrus that works well with the initial mineral hit you get on the palette; it's an almost sea-spray contrast and it makes things really interesting.

It winds down a bit as the complexity develops in the mid-palette, with mouth-filling, gentle acidity, delicate, mouse-like bubbles and a chewy, and focussed finish that demands another taste. A really well executed sparkling at $18 and will probably reward a few years in the cellar.

2014 Pitchfork Chardonnay

Margaret River more

Not really my kind of Chardonnay, although I do like the melon and ripe grapefruit characteristics that developed in the wine's third day. The nose is not particularly precise, and is a little bit too fruit forward for me.

The acid/mineral balance is pretty good, but the fruit and oak just isn't that interesting. Certainly well above much of the bog-standard Chardonnay sold in Australia, but not to my liking.

2013 Onannon Pinot Noir Gippsland

1/3/2015 - AlexGarner Likes this wine: 93 points

The initial nose of this wine is quite serious - intense and savoury, with a touch of underbrush mixing well with dark cherry and some forest fruits.

The palette has some initial striking acidity that is balanced out by the quite sweet fruit in the mid-palette that comes across a bit like a kirsch liqueur. Very drinkable and mellow with a great mouthfeel and lots of personality. There is complexity through the palette to the finish and the wine evolves very well with some splashy decanting.

Quite an austere nose with some chalky fruits and a big slatey mineral presence, but the two are not really in balance. The palette is rich and powerful, but the acidity is not in check and there is a touch of flab on the fruit.

2009 Greenock Creek Shiraz Roennfeldt Road

Barossa Valley more

11/29/2014 - AlexGarner Likes this wine: 96 points

Greenock Creek tasting with Jarrod Shields (Cloudwine South Melbourne): This blockbuster had been open for a good day or so when we tasted it. The nose is tar, bitumen, liquorice and blackberry with distinctive American oak. The palette is meaty and chewy, but still with a silky texture that seem to intensify the black fruits. The tannins come on at the finish and go for quite a while.

2013 Yabby Lake Vineyard Pinot Noir Single Block Release Block 2

Mornington Peninsula more

11/29/2014 - AlexGarner Likes this wine: 97 points

Yabby Lake New Releases Tasting (Prince Wine Store - Bank Street): Each year, as the vines get more experience under their belt, these wines get more individual and personalised. There is less "Mornington Peninsula" and more "Yabby Lake".

This guy is a little darker and more brooding than the Block 1, with black cherry notes and smoky meats, but still laced with that balancing sweet red fruit.

You can see why the critics love this wine, with a juicy and clean palette with straight mineral lines directly from the soil and a perfect acid/tannin balance that makes this the wine to drink right now.

In time though, I'm betting the Block 1 will eclipse even this amazing wine.

2013 Yabby Lake Vineyard Pinot Noir Single Block Release Block 1

Mornington Peninsula more

11/29/2014 - AlexGarner Likes this wine: 96 points

Yabby Lake New Releases Tasting (Prince Wine Store - Bank Street): For years the Yabby Lake Pinot Noirs have defined what winemakers can charge for Mornington Peninsula Pinot - always the benchmark for what this region can do - and while the prices have been going steadily north over this time, the quality of the wine from these vines is off the charts. Every year they look like more and more of a bargain.

The Block 1 has by far the best nose of all the Yabby Lake wines this year, with delicious red berry and perfumed vanillin from the oak with layers of earthiness. You really get a sense of the vineyard and as a result, this wine has so much character to show.

The palette is clean and pure with stewed red fruit and a silky mouthfeel that juxtaposes perfectly with the tangy acidity. These both give way to some soft tannins in the finish.

While the Block 2 currently has the blockbuster palette that this wine can't match at the moment, I think this is going to be the better wine in five to seven year's time.

My advice though: get both.

A quite dry and robust nose, with dried and fresh herbs, but also with some red berry fruit - although not very much.

The palette has a good texture, with some cutting acidity and a mineral-heavy mid palette that picks up a bit of fruit towards the quite crunchy finish.
