Popped and poured. Raspberries, cherries, rhubarb pie and this beautiful floral thing that reminded me a bit of gardenias. The fruit expression is really just so pure and finishes with a pleasant zip. Medium bodied. I'm not entirely sure what I was expecting but this was a very pleasant surprise, A wonderful food wine and a tremendous value.

Popped and poured. Smoked meat, black berry liqueur, black pepper, herbs, glycerin. Definitely better with some air and drinks very well on Day 2. A little more heat that I would prefer but there is more for than against in this wine. Seems a bit young so further patience may be rewarded. A quaffing wine and a crowd-pleaser but could be tough to pair with food. Tonight, it worked well with pulled-pork sandwiches. Drink with a short decant or hold.

Popped and poured. Straw colored, far from looking old. Smelled a little funny at first but it actually opened up and became rather pleasant with a bouquet that reminded me of quince and apples. Medium bodied. The aforementioned apples and quince followed through accompanied by hints of stone fruits. The oak was very well balanced and there was a nice backbone of acidity that really seemed to frame everything rather nicely. Not bad for a late afternoon quaffer.

This has been stored in my cellar since release. Popped and poured. No formal notes as I enjoyed this bottle (my last) with a friend on his birthday and the environment was too social to give the wine my undivided attention but I can report that it's drinking beautifully and probably has several years left in the tank. Groom did some great work at Geyser Peak during his tenure.

Popped poured. Lots of cassis and some ripe raspberry and tobacco. Everything in balance now and firing on all cylinders. Too bad the likelihood of ever finding more is slim to none. At least 5 years of life left in these...possibly more due to the balance. Drink or Hold.

Lively...wanted to burst from the bottle without any agitation. Tons of Amarillo hops on the nose with a great horse blanket funk. Love these beers from Prairie.

Pulled the cork about 30 minutes prior to our meal. Beautiful aromatics or pure brambles and spiced cake. No detectable heat this time. I gotta say that the oak character and the smoke that was prevalent in Khamen's earlier experiences have integrated sublimely. His brilliant notes from several years back are still relevant though I would say that everything has integrated and it's probably at a plateau. Tannins have really softened. A lot of power still. This bottle was outstanding with a roasted leg of lamb. Wish I had bought more than two bottles. Drink or Hold until 2020.

Pulled the cork to slow-ox about an hour before dinner. Deep garnet, purple. Some sediment. Plums, cherries, and some mushroom like quality on Day 1 accompanied by rather firm tannins. On Day 2, the wine transformed to show brambles, cherries, preserved fruits and a little truffle. Room filling aromatics and the tannins were less firm than the previous day. I have to say that this was a real surprise considering the notes on CT. Despite my experience with this bottle on this day, it's hard for me to judge the future of this...but I have to believe that the life is longer than most folks think, particularly considering the positive evolution on Day 2. I say drink with patience or hold for near-term

Served out of a 375mL. Popped and poured. Secondary characteristics are dominating the nose now with mushrooms over red fruit. Still decent but definitely on the decline. Doesn't appear to have enough acid to keep drinking well for much longer IMHO. Tannins are non-existent. Fading. Drink up.

Decanted for about one hour. Cork in great condition. Delightful nose of bacon fat, garrigue and red fruits. On the palate, however, it wasn't quite as expressive which was a little disheartening because the bouquet was full of promise. Firm tannins still. Short finish. Paired wonderfully with cassoulet. Still a very nice bottle and I would certainly try this one again should I have an opportunity. This was my only bottle; a generous gift from a friend.

2001 Il Marroneto Brunello di Montalcino

5/2/2015 - thesternowl Likes this wine: 91 points

Popped and poured. Really pretty aromas of pure, red fruit and spice come out of the bottle as soon as the cork is pulled; great sign. Some slight indication of age but really, looks like what I expect from a Brunello regardless of age. First sip is sublime with the purest, tart cherries, tobacco and leather. The hint of baking spices on the nose is extremely attractive I have to say, however, this is not going to be a wine for everyone. This is a nuanced, elegant BdM that really rewards with a great meal. This is a wine to start an evening with, not to finish an evening with. Power is not a descriptive word here. Definitely more feminine in style. Really quite lovely if you're into that sort of thing. Drink now or hold for the short term.

Popped and poured out of a split. Deep, dark purple; no visual signs of age. Beautiful bouquet of dark fruit and spice. Big expression of creme de cassis with some blackberries, and tobacco. Tannins are more integrated but still present and pleasant. Several years of life ahead, yet. While the wine isn't terribly distinctive, there is an undeniable quality about it. Lots of fun. Drink or hold.

Popped and poured a taste. Initially a little fat and flabby. Slow-ox for two hours and holy smokes...did that ever do the trick. Brambles, kirsch, garrigue, charcoal, spices...everything that I usually want in my CdP was in play. Great finish. This bottle was singing on this night and seems to me a tremendous effort in a vintage that is overlooked.

Popped and poured alongside the 2015 release. The 2014 has a seemingly more complex, open bouquet. Chocolate is more of the rich, milk variety and the barrel notes are more obvious when compared to the 2015. The coffee character is not near as powerful but that's to be expected considering the volatility of that compound.

Popped and poured. Loads of ripe brambles and some spice as it settles down in the glass. An hour of air really helps. A touch hot but somewhat expected at 15+%. Would be killer with a bloody steak. This is not a shy wine by any means and while it's definitely big and not usually my style, the fruit is quite pure. I'd hit it again.

Decanted for one hour. Pretty ruby colored robe with some slight bricking towards the edges. Initially a little thin but gained weight over a few hours. Notes of cherries, umeboshi, black tea, baking spices and a hint of vanilla. Tremendously well made in a tough vintage. Drink with some patience and contemplation or hold. Delicious with rib-eyes.
