2001 Il Marroneto Brunello di Montalcino

5/2/2015 - thesternowl Likes this wine: 91 points

Popped and poured. Really pretty aromas of pure, red fruit and spice come out of the bottle as soon as the cork is pulled; great sign. Some slight indication of age but really, looks like what I expect from a Brunello regardless of age. First sip is sublime with the purest, tart cherries, tobacco and leather. The hint of baking spices on the nose is extremely attractive I have to say, however, this is not going to be a wine for everyone. This is a nuanced, elegant BdM that really rewards with a great meal. This is a wine to start an evening with, not to finish an evening with. Power is not a descriptive word here. Definitely more feminine in style. Really quite lovely if you're into that sort of thing. Drink now or hold for the short term.

Popped and poured out of a split. Deep, dark purple; no visual signs of age. Beautiful bouquet of dark fruit and spice. Big expression of creme de cassis with some blackberries, and tobacco. Tannins are more integrated but still present and pleasant. Several years of life ahead, yet. While the wine isn't terribly distinctive, there is an undeniable quality about it. Lots of fun. Drink or hold.

Popped and poured; deep golden color. I agree with ROCKNROLLER on the notes for this one. Matched with plenty of effervescence provides a decent mousse considering the age. Definitely a winner in the group today. Drink now.

Popped and poured. Pretty one dimensional with an ample amount of strawberries and plums really...not a whole lot else. It's not confected or anything and it's pleasant enough but really...it's pretty simple and serviceable.

Popped and poured a taste. Initially a little fat and flabby. Slow-ox for two hours and holy smokes...did that ever do the trick. Brambles, kirsch, garrigue, charcoal, spices...everything that I usually want in my CdP was in play. Great finish. This bottle was singing on this night and seems to me a tremendous effort in a vintage that is overlooked.

Popped and poured alongside the 2015 release. The 2014 has a seemingly more complex, open bouquet. Chocolate is more of the rich, milk variety and the barrel notes are more obvious when compared to the 2015. The coffee character is not near as powerful but that's to be expected considering the volatility of that compound.

Popped and poured. Loads of ripe brambles and some spice as it settles down in the glass. An hour of air really helps. A touch hot but somewhat expected at 15+%. Would be killer with a bloody steak. This is not a shy wine by any means and while it's definitely big and not usually my style, the fruit is quite pure. I'd hit it again.

Popped and poured. Fascinating aromas of raspberries, brambles and hot asphalt. Good structure with the aforementioned fruit setting up nicely on the palate. Delicious with lasagna but would be great with most foods. Drinking so well right now and really a tremendous QPR at $15. Drink or hold for the near term.

Decanted for one hour. Pretty ruby colored robe with some slight bricking towards the edges. Initially a little thin but gained weight over a few hours. Notes of cherries, umeboshi, black tea, baking spices and a hint of vanilla. Tremendously well made in a tough vintage. Drink with some patience and contemplation or hold. Delicious with rib-eyes.

Decanted for three hours. Some slight bricking but really looking very good. A bit austere at first but then raspberries and black tea came through. Feminine. Elegant. Still pretty tannic despite it's age. Delicious with pan-seared duck on mushroom risotto. Kinda wish I had another bottle so I could try it again in 5 years. Drink or hold.

Popped and poured into white wine glasses. Intense golden color. Figs, apricots, quince, some lemon curd and a touch of brioche. Rich and decadent. Glad I have one more bottle but hard to tell if I should drink in the near term or hold for a bit longer. I'm thinking the former.

Short, 30 minute decant. Good color...dark though. Cherry pie with a lightly burned crust, black tea, forest floor, mint. Medium body. Nice finish. Tannins are still rather firm. Characteristic acidity to the style. Went very well with parsnip ravioli and braised beef cheeks. This bottle has been stored in a passive cellar since release and, based off this experience, has quite a long life ahead of it. Drink or hold.

Popped (unscrewed) and poured. Incredibly dark garnet that draws you in and leaves you transfixed. Blackberries, cassis, tobacco and pomegranate. Hugely concentrated but in no way a fruit bomb. I'm absolutely struck by the structure. Finish lasts for nearly a minute. Tannins are still very firm and there's a serious zing of acidity. Still a baby in its tenth year. I would never have guessed this to be an Aussie, blind. Possibly the best CS I've ever had from the continent. Very excited that I have another bottle to rest patiently in the cellar.

Popped and poured. Slow-ox for three hours. Deep garnet with little visual signs of age. Smells fresh too! Gooseberries, black berries, plums, cassis, smoke, spice box, tobacco and a little vanilla. This comes across remarkably young. Great structure. Tannins well integrated. Would be totally at home with a fine meal but it's got more than enough swagger to please on its own. I've never had Grange before but I can imagine this being inspired by it. This was like no other California Syrah that I can recall and may have an ample does of CS as it did seem to carry some characteristics I wouldn't normally associate with Syrah. At $26, I wish I had bought everything I could.

After reading some reviews I decided to take the patient approach with this bottle. Poured myself a splash and indeed, quite wound up. Poured a glass and then set it aside during the game. After watching Seattle elect to throw on 2nd and Goal instead of handing the rock to Marshawn, I went back to the wine (at least three hours after opening). The air-time loosened things up a bit. I was getting blackberries, spearmint, leather and green bell pepper. This probably has a lot of life left in it but I doubt it will improve tremendously. Regardless, it's an easy 90 for me. Wish I had more.
