Decanted quite, good 8 hrs. Of air. Pretty high expectations on this one, big time hype of the OR 12 vintage along with a producer than can be pretty showy (in a good way) right out of the gate. Tons of exotic scents on the nose, flowers, and spices, all wrapped around a core of dark candied cassis fruit. Very Cristom. Deceptive wine on the palate, a big blast of black strawberry fruit announced it certainly wasn’t shy. For about half a glass, I was actually a little concerned that the wine was a bit simple, all fruit and nothing else. Fortunately that was not the case as a supporting tannic structure emerged along with some interesting mint and clove. Also began to develop a nice earthy, mineral streak on the finish. Low acidity, but plenty of verve. If you have a few of these, definitely worth cracking one open, should age well too, the track record is there.

Decanted 1hr, but please give this a lot more air if you are opening this anytime soon. The only thing that betrayed this as a product of a warm forward vintage was the dark color of the wine, otherwise.....first sip had terrific grip in the mouth, takes a firm hold, then slowly unleashes a medley of violets, pressed berries, and an emerging taste of grilled red meat. medium in body and tannic structure. Back half and finish show some well used wood, and adding touch of richness on the finish. A whopping 13.9% alc on the label. Should age AND develop well. I would hazard a guess that Mr. Harrington is rather pleased on how this IM turned out, I sure was.

2012 Rôtie Cellars Mourvedre "dre"

Washington more

5/4/2015 - Dale M wrote: 91 points

P&P, A very pretty and polished WA Mouvedre. I was impressed with the purity of the fruit, mainly cherry, that was full of snap and vigor. Spice notes around the edges added a nice supporting touch, tannins were well blended and seamless. I didn’t taste the dill component that Jeb Dunnuck found so off putting, nor the ‘tartness’ on the finish, I think we had two very different bottles of wine. My only qualm is price, I think this goes for around $65, yet the ‘Northern’ and ‘Southern’ blends go for $40, I don’t see a $25 increase in quality so I’ll stick to those two offering for reds, and the very underrated Northern White.

2010 Alain Voge Cornas Les Chailles

Syrah more

5/4/2015 - Dale M wrote: 93 points

I haven’t had a Voge Cornas in quite some time (maybe ever) and what a great treat this was to drink. The nose was very expressive, lots of young, fresh cut flowers and perfumed dark fruits. A medium bodied Syrah, this was somewhat forward in nature, but plenty of firm, underlying structure as well. The fruit had a fairly classic profile of dark raspberry and other mixed berries, grilled meat and a slight tint of orange peel. I think if I were served this blind I might have guessed a quality, semi traditional Rioja. Lots of dry extract on the clean finish. This should age well, and for what $45 or so dollars, terrific wine.

5/4/2015 - Dale M wrote: NR

Started off to a choppy start, a distinct cork smell plagued the nose, not tca corked, but literally smelled like the cork stopper. Air seemed to help a little as the scent faded somewhat, but it still present for the duration of the night. Rather a shame, as the palate itself was very good. While on the rich side, it still had a lot quality Sav Blanc characteristics, slightly grassy, chlorophyll, pronounced mineral edge, and a beautiful golden color. The back half carried a smoky, almond filled finish that avoided any oxidative traits (which I generally do not like). Hard to say where this goes from here, so I will err on the side of caution and drink my other bottle within the next 2 years. Had the nose been performing, this could have really been excellent.

Those that crave enamel ripping acidity should find the Sec moniker well earned on this guy. The acidity is immediate and impactful, tenacious, and almost astringent but it softens just a tad as it progresses through the mouth to make the experience enjoyably. Do not think of drinking this without food, trust me on this. Good volume and weight on the back half show case soil and minerals, and clearly peg this as Chenin vs of that say Sav Blanc. I’m going to hold my last bottle, not two mention score a few more as this should drink very well for a decade plus.

Decanted 2 hrs. Really nice and classic California Syrah Nose, full of dark blackberry paired with roasted veggies and a slight note of wood. Very fresh. This wine has integrated nicely, very well balanced and tasty. I had high expectations for this, and for the most part it delivered, though I would drink up if you have them.

4/10/2015 - Dale M wrote: 93 points

Decanted 1 hr. The first 20 to 30 minutes the wines aromas and flavors were dominated by some new wood, but of little concern as it blew off pretty quickly. I love the musky aroma of the wine, a feature I am really starting to identify with all Rotie Cellars wines. Still a tad monolithic on the palate, but a quiet but steadily rising mineral streak asserts itself with each sip, beautifully framing the dark raspberry fruit. Very persistent form starts to finish. I have just one bottle left, but I am going to try to hold for at least 5 more years, better if it can make 8 to 10 as I think there is some real long term potential aging this wine.

2000 Château La Fleur Morange

St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend more

4/7/2015 - Dale M wrote: 93 points

Decanted a good 8 hrs. and consumed over two days. This was a tasty little surprise for a couple of reasons: first, it was a very well made wine that has coasted into its 15th birthday with ease, Second, I think for the first time in a long while, I finally drank a true St. Emilion that actually tastes like a Bordeaux instead of a high polished, New World clone. Just for reference, i have had precious few right bank wines over $50, so the sample size is small to be sure, and what i have had, nothing has really grabbed my attention. The wine was darker that its typical left bank cousin, it still had that lightness and freshness on the palate, firms up a little in the middle, and a slow winding, leisurely finish. It also had a more smoky element than I am used to from Paulliac or St. Estephe, thecfruit profile was more plum vs. cassis or dark cherry. A life changer, no, but this was well made and a real treat to drink.

2008 Domaine Weinbach Riesling Schlossberg Cuvée Ste. Catherine

Alsace Grand Cru more

4/6/2015 - Dale M wrote: 94 points

It’s been a while since I have had a white wine that has really grabbed my full attention, and boy did this Riesling deliver. The palate impact was immediate and penetrating, citrus juices (predominately lemon) work their way into all the nooks and crannies of the mouth, leaving a powdered, stony residue in its wake. The palate weight conveys a rich and luxurious feel to the proceedings but no actual sweetness is tasted a trait that this Domaine is so skilled at producing. The acidity is strong but so evenly spread out that it avoids as coming across as aggressive, in fact, I’d say elegant is the more apt adjective. Long and very impressive on the finish. This is still a very young wine, and I hazard a guess will continue to develop gracefully for another decade and hold perhaps another 10 years after that. Superb.

P&P. Firing on all cylinders now, this Papera I can say with confidence, is in the zone. The fruit and new wood are in perfect balance, great definition, supporting notes of spices, and some floral aspects that were not present two years ago. While I cannot see improvement, this does some good underlying structure to hold the fort for a few years yet.

2012 Château Thivin Côte de Brouilly

Gamay more

3/25/2015 - Dale M wrote: 90 points

P&P and delicious from the word go. Christmas spiced nose leads to a very generous portion of ripe, dark strawberry fruit. But long before the fruit overstays its welcome, additional air time seems to firm up the wine a bit, adding some pretty iron and mineral traits, even a little tree bark. The finish seems to finally reveal some decent tannin and acidity suggesting that perhaps a little development could ensue down the road. Though by all means this was a real treat in the present day, on wet and cool Tuesday Night in March.

2008 SYZYGY Saros 126

Columbia Valley Red Blend more

3/9/2015 - Dale M wrote: 93 points

This was a big time surprise. I had really liked my last two bottles of Saros, but the development had exceeded my expectations. I took the cork out (but not decanted) around noon, and served at 8pm. The development of floral scents and flavors was striking, lavender and such. Sweet red fruits that still carry a pretty good tannic punch. Very balanced. Served blind, I might have a guessed a top shelf Carlisle Zinfandel, though more masculine than that grape typically displays. It was aged in 23 mos new oak, and it is perfectly integrated into a rich texture at this point. Still on the upside, should have 5, or maybe even more quality years of drinking ahead.

Having this wine last night, it’s safe to say I am officially in the fan club of this wine, and I see what all the fuss is about. Very little in the way of traditional fruit descriptors, instead very floral and ever so slightly rich, the wines underlying structure delivers on its balance and precision, remarkable consistent on the palate from entry to finish. A bit of cleansing iodine and chalk on the back half. Sure it should age, bit this is drinking just fine at present. Pull the damn cork, you won’t regret it.

3/1/2015 - Dale M wrote: NR

Count me as another body interested in the recent WB thread on this wine, very eager to see what’s under the hood. Decanted a good 8 hrs. While the palate was pretty much as expected, tight, structured, a little Sangiovese fruit on the back half and finish. The tannic structure while firm was also very elegant and perfectly balanced with the acidity. The real surprise was the nose, very open and just flat out beautiful to smell. I agree with notion that we sometimes are kidding ourselves in guessing how wines will age, but is there any doubt whatsoever that this isn’t going to develop into a stunner? I thought not.
