2012 Kerloo Cellars Tempranillo

Columbia Valley more

Terrific nose, full of fresh flowers and savory, meaty notes. At first, seemed a tad thin on the mid palate, but a few bite of curried chicken kabobs added flavor and dimension, very fresh and energetic. would benefit from 5 years of sleep to develop further but drinking well today. Easy wine to mis-judge, but the complexity and structure is there, just be patient.

2012 Kerloo Cellars Syrah Les Collines Vineyard

Walla Walla Valley more

7/4/2015 - Dale M wrote: 92 points

Decanted 8 hrs. A rather unique Syrah, combining the perfectly ripening 2012 WA vintage in a 13.9%ABV package. Though low on perceptible tannin, this youngster has plenty of energy and grip in its delivery of fresh pressed blackberry skins and orange peel. Closing acidity kicks in on the finish. Just a faint touch of wood is felt on the slick texture though I have no idea of the actual percentage of new oak. Really curious to see where this goes with age. Under $40, rest assured this is a safe purchase if you are on the fence.

A very good but not outstanding version of this wine. That out of the way, I did enjoy the Kabinetts playful balance of lime juices and saline tinted acidity. Typical Prum poise and restraint. Good underlying tension. Should hold for a decade or so if one is so inclined.

Wow, I had forgotten how good a S.O. Graacher Domprobst Spat can be, and a decent but not spectacular vintage no less. Loaded full of ripe papaya and guava fruits, heavy palate density, but great clarity and focus. One to pair with proper food pairings as to not over shadow the food - Thai was perfect. Under screw cap, this will age for many years. Terrific.

My fifth and final bottle, and by far the best of the bunch. A pop and pour, this had slight oxidative traits on the nose and palate which quickly were pushed to the back ground as a lovely red cherry fruit quality emerged, almost like a fine aged Sangiovese with just a little less acidity. Additional air brought a little saddle leather and a small touch of bacon, but this remained and its core, a very refined and elegant wine. I’m really surprised at how much life there appears to be left in this bottle, though I think we all know that Guigals bottle variation can really make it tricky in assessing a life span. Nonetheless, this was a fine wine and a real treat to drink this 16 year old wine on this overcast, relaxing Sunday afternoon.

I must admit, this was really well done Chardonnay in a new world fashion. While it had the riper and lush characteristics such as hazelnut etc, its core had a really refreshing nectarine flavor that just zinged the wine along nicely. Happily purchase again.

Does a really neat trick of being accessible with generous cabernet fruit, smooth tannic structure (does firm up a bit on the finish) but also is quite light on its feet. Under 14% ABV. A producer to keep an eye out for.

Chianti Classico DOCG Sangiovese more

6/8/2015 - Dale M wrote: 92 points

Decanted for an hour as this was a bit of a impulsive move, more air certainly would have been welcome. There can be no doubt how great a vintage 2010 was in Tuscany and this bottle only fuels that opinion. A pure, joyful, and transparent expression that screams sangiovese and nothing else. Text book sour cherry that is brilliantly offset by just the right amount of savory earth, touches of shoe leather, and spices. All the while supporting acidity is always present, moving things along at just the right pace. Should age really well, problem is, I bought these to drink while my 10 Rancia sleeps, hopefully I can get one of these to 2025 tonfind out, but I wouldn't bet on that happening. Best $26 I have spent on red wine in the last 5 years.

Decanted for 4 hrs. Celebrating a new gig that was made official the day before, I wanted something with a little wow factor. Certainly a Saxum wine, no question, but I love the firm structure that keeps this wine pretty reigned for current drinking. Perhaps the 26% of Mourvedre is flexing its muscle as there was a pretty good tannic structure, plus a dark earthy cherry and tree bark qualities that I associate with the grape. A first few sips did detect a trace of heat (15.8) but this sorted itself rather quickly. Sadly, my last of two bottles and I would strongly advocate holding this for a few years before it really starts to shine. Great wine though, no question.

2012 Cristom Pinot Noir Marjorie Vineyard

Willamette Valley more

5/18/2015 - Dale M wrote: 93 points

Decanted quite, good 8 hrs. Of air. Pretty high expectations on this one, big time hype of the OR 12 vintage along with a producer than can be pretty showy (in a good way) right out of the gate. Tons of exotic scents on the nose, flowers, and spices, all wrapped around a core of dark candied cassis fruit. Very Cristom. Deceptive wine on the palate, a big blast of black strawberry fruit announced it certainly wasn’t shy. For about half a glass, I was actually a little concerned that the wine was a bit simple, all fruit and nothing else. Fortunately that was not the case as a supporting tannic structure emerged along with some interesting mint and clove. Also began to develop a nice earthy, mineral streak on the finish. Low acidity, but plenty of verve. If you have a few of these, definitely worth cracking one open, should age well too, the track record is there.

Decanted 1hr, but please give this a lot more air if you are opening this anytime soon. The only thing that betrayed this as a product of a warm forward vintage was the dark color of the wine, otherwise.....first sip had terrific grip in the mouth, takes a firm hold, then slowly unleashes a medley of violets, pressed berries, and an emerging taste of grilled red meat. medium in body and tannic structure. Back half and finish show some well used wood, and adding touch of richness on the finish. A whopping 13.9% alc on the label. Should age AND develop well. I would hazard a guess that Mr. Harrington is rather pleased on how this IM turned out, I sure was.

5/4/2015 - Dale M wrote: 91 points

P&P, A very pretty and polished WA Mouvedre. I was impressed with the purity of the fruit, mainly cherry, that was full of snap and vigor. Spice notes around the edges added a nice supporting touch, tannins were well blended and seamless. I didn’t taste the dill component that Jeb Dunnuck found so off putting, nor the ‘tartness’ on the finish, I think we had two very different bottles of wine. My only qualm is price, I think this goes for around $65, yet the ‘Northern’ and ‘Southern’ blends go for $40, I don’t see a $25 increase in quality so I’ll stick to those two offering for reds, and the very underrated Northern White.

2010 Alain Voge Cornas Les Chailles

Syrah more

5/4/2015 - Dale M wrote: 93 points

I haven’t had a Voge Cornas in quite some time (maybe ever) and what a great treat this was to drink. The nose was very expressive, lots of young, fresh cut flowers and perfumed dark fruits. A medium bodied Syrah, this was somewhat forward in nature, but plenty of firm, underlying structure as well. The fruit had a fairly classic profile of dark raspberry and other mixed berries, grilled meat and a slight tint of orange peel. I think if I were served this blind I might have guessed a quality, semi traditional Rioja. Lots of dry extract on the clean finish. This should age well, and for what $45 or so dollars, terrific wine.

5/4/2015 - Dale M wrote: NR

Started off to a choppy start, a distinct cork smell plagued the nose, not tca corked, but literally smelled like the cork stopper. Air seemed to help a little as the scent faded somewhat, but it still present for the duration of the night. Rather a shame, as the palate itself was very good. While on the rich side, it still had a lot quality Sav Blanc characteristics, slightly grassy, chlorophyll, pronounced mineral edge, and a beautiful golden color. The back half carried a smoky, almond filled finish that avoided any oxidative traits (which I generally do not like). Hard to say where this goes from here, so I will err on the side of caution and drink my other bottle within the next 2 years. Had the nose been performing, this could have really been excellent.

Those that crave enamel ripping acidity should find the Sec moniker well earned on this guy. The acidity is immediate and impactful, tenacious, and almost astringent but it softens just a tad as it progresses through the mouth to make the experience enjoyably. Do not think of drinking this without food, trust me on this. Good volume and weight on the back half show case soil and minerals, and clearly peg this as Chenin vs of that say Sav Blanc. I’m going to hold my last bottle, not two mention score a few more as this should drink very well for a decade plus.
