2008 Skylite Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Walla Walla Valley

more

Some good Walla Walla characteristics - fruit forward, not over-oaked and generally very enjoyable. Tannins are firm and suggest this wine may improve with time in the cellar, though I can't see it becoming a great Walla Walla Cab.

- Garnet color - Very smooth and at a great place to drink now. Did not decant and it seemed to not need it. Not overpowering, but very enjoyable. I have one more, and will look forward to opening it within 12-24 months.

- Brick color with medium forming legs with a medium/full body with a long finish - This was my favorite Washington red - after a three day whirlwind tasting at several of the top producers. Wine seems made to drink now, but with structure that should also cellar for 5+ years. Smooth, round and full of flavor with a long finish. Reminds me of an older Leonetti. I also like the price point of $50. Spent near double that for less enjoyable wines at several other wineries before coming to Long Shadow - which is a must stop for tasting. Make an appointment as they don't take walk-ins. Rating 94+

- Brick color - This is still drinking beautifully! Enjoyed with 4 other wine geeks with Blankiet, Kapscandy, and Quilceda Creek. It held its own just fine. Major bell pepper nose and a big mouth feel with little alcohol remaining. Wish I had more. End of an era.

I continue to enjoy this "Monday Night Pinot". For some reason, this whole cluster Pinot has a very high sugar content - which compliments the raspberry fruit notes. Very different than most Willamette Valley Pinots.

The folks that gave low scores either don't get Oregon Pinot, or got a bad bottle. While I don't rate this a great bottle, it has many of the characteristics that make Willamette Valley Pinot so unique and loved. It has a small amount of typical earthy funk on the nose that lasts well into the second hour. There is a nice raspberry undertone. The texture is moderate for an '11. The finish is good, but I get a hint of mallow as it fades. An enjoyable wine and fabulous qpr.

This was interesting. Upon opening, the nose seemed off - almost funky in a chemical, not barnyard way. After a few moments the classic Pinot nose came through. The first taste seemed a little rough, but it improved greatly over the next 30 minutes. The wine has character and some depth. At the WTSO price of $14, it's an absolute steal! I live in the Willamette Valley and drink a LOT of Pinot - often the really good stuff. I'd rather have the terroir character than perfect balance. I like it!

The wine is drinking beautifully. A little more syrupy than I remember the last bottle. Great flavor - licorice and plum with a very long finish. Still plenty of life left. Enjoyed with elk sausage and strong cheeses.
