2001 Clos Rougeard (Foucault) Saumur-Champigny

Cabernet Franc more

3/25/2014 - wrrntl Likes this wine: NR

Vatan and Clos Rougeard Dinner (Ripple DC): On opening this still show some nice primary fruit on the nose but later in the evening notes of brine, cocoa and by the end of the evening even tertiary notes of white flower came through. The palate was very much excellent Cabernet Franc with darker berries mingling with a roasted vegetable note. The finish was stunning with very nice tilled soil note. Many rated this as their WOTN

2003 Clos Rougeard (Foucault) Saumur-Champigny

Cabernet Franc more

3/25/2014 - wrrntl Likes this wine: NR

Vatan and Clos Rougeard Dinner (Ripple DC): Clearly the ripest of the quartet showing even some hints of balsamic on the nose but in a pleasurable non-flawed way. Notes of richer, redder berries on the palate with more cocoa notes. The finish had pleasurable cedar and herbal underpinnings. Obviously Clos Rougeard but the vintage is still standing out at this point.

2004 Clos Rougeard (Foucault) Saumur-Champigny

Cabernet Franc more

3/25/2014 - wrrntl Likes this wine: NR

Vatan and Clos Rougeard Dinner (Ripple DC): Excellent balance of fresh fruit and the emergence of secondary notes. Still outside of its drinking window but by the end of the evening this wine, for me, competing with the 2001 for WOTN. The tannins have really begun to fold into the excellent finish. I was very pleased with this wine and it was a pleasure to go back and forth between this and the 2001.

2006 Clos Rougeard (Foucault) Saumur-Champigny

Cabernet Franc more

3/25/2014 - wrrntl Likes this wine: NR

Vatan and Clos Rougeard Dinner (Ripple DC): This was showing the most youthful and rightfully so. The wine clearly needs aging but the components are all there for this to be a great bottle of wine. The character is brambly with dark fruits with some hints of cherry as well. The nose was by far the most intriguing element at present but clearly the palate and finish will evolve to match as the intensity is there but still youthful

Chenin Blanc more

3/25/2014 - wrrntl Likes this wine: NR

Vatan and Clos Rougeard Dinner (Ripple DC): This wine took hours to show anything but when it started to emerge at the end of the evening it developed quite nicely. Rich fruit on the nose with no noticeable oak. The palate was rich and long with nice minerality emerging. This clearly needs time to develop before a more hearty examination is possible.

2003 Edmond Vatan Sancerre Rouge

Pinot Noir more

3/25/2014 - wrrntl Likes this wine: NR

Vatan and Clos Rougeard Dinner (Ripple DC): Incredible nose of bright cherries and earthy soil notes. The vintage clearly shows but in a wonderfully fruity way that is very balanced by the mineral undertones. I have only had 2 Vatan rouges and each time the terroir is highly transparent even in a ripe vintage such as 2003. This was a real treat to taste

2011 Edmond Vatan Sancerre Clos la Néore

Sauvignon Blanc more

3/25/2014 - wrrntl Likes this wine: NR

Vatan and Clos Rougeard Dinner (Ripple DC): The 2011 is a youthful wine that is drinking very well for a young Vatan. The nose is more herbal than grassy with the typical flinty notes. Hints of fennel and even spring onion emerge on the palate. The finish is mineral and while not as long as the 2008 very pleasurable. The 2011 can easily develop in the bottle but I would consider more of a midterm ager than say the rich 2005 and the stony 2008.

2008 Edmond Vatan Sancerre Clos la Néore

Sauvignon Blanc more

3/25/2014 - wrrntl Likes this wine: NR

Vatan and Clos Rougeard Dinner (Ripple DC): This wine was the most restrained upon opening. However, with time in the glass this became the group's favorite of the Vatan blanc flight. Again the palate showed great rich texture before diving into the very mineral laden finish. The 2008 has excellent balance of fruit, minerality and acidity. This wine will last a very long time and will be very interesting to follow its integration. If one opened this in the near term I would suggest decanting.

2005 Edmond Vatan Sancerre Clos la Néore

Sauvignon Blanc more

3/25/2014 - wrrntl Likes this wine: NR

Vatan and Clos Rougeard Dinner (Ripple DC): The 2005 offered up a rich and pungent nose of grass, herbs and some flinty smoke flavors. The palate was rich and expansive with hints of more exotic fruit. This wine could clearly age for much longer but was an absolute pleasure to taste now. It is nice to see how Vatan perform from riper vintages showing plenty of acidity to allow the fruit to integrate over an extended cellaring period

2011 Gerard & Pierre Morin Sancerre Ovide

Sauvignon Blanc more

5/13/2013 - wrrntl wrote: NR

This Sancerre comes from a single vineyard, Ovide, in the Bue village. The soil is a unique style of limestone called, “caillottes.” Caillottes is more pebble shaped. The vineyard is directly behind the winery and has a nice south, southeast exposure. The 2011 Ovide is very forward with nice herbal qualities already balancing the citrus notes on the palate. The finish is not as long and mineral as the 2008 or 2010 but the acidity is far more integrated. This wine will continue to drink well over the midterm of 3-7 years. The 2012 tasted in February out of tank is a return to the laser-like focus of the 2010 vintage with just slightly lower acidity levels. Drink 2011 now, hold 2008 and 2010 and get ready for 2012!

Great bottle and really firing on all cylinders. These have never really shut down and I think that they are a pleasure to drink now! Though aging might bring out more secondary or tertiary notes, I don't think they will get any "better" than right now. In general, I have had the most pleasure from 2007 out of the more current releases to drink.

2007 Henri Jouan Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Echezeaux

Pinot Noir more

9/25/2012 - wrrntl wrote: NR

Imported by Potomac Selections and bought directly from them during a close out. The cork was saturated to the end and the fill was a centimeter down. The wine was fine, it fact, it was great. No idea why this needed to be closed out unless the fills and saturated corks were previously known. The nose was very floral for a Gevrey but not surprising for Jouan's style. The palate was very smooth with hints of game and underbrush. The finish was mineral and tart. For a 2007, this was very elegant and while light still rich in flavor.

This is the third bottle I have tasted over two months but the first time paired directly with food. The other occasions were during a tasting and the second time with cheese. The pairing slightly overshadowed the wine, duck leg over a barley porcini pilaf with pan dripping gravy. This wine is drinking well and showing its age nicely. Secondary notes of brambly earth, leather and dried fruit is complimented by tea-like tannins. Still some liveliness on the back-end but this should be consumed in the immediacy. Shows nice 2001 qualities and very good for a mere bourgogne. B+/A- though leaning more to the A- given pedigree.

Quite elegant with many layers of flavors. The richness of the orchard fruit is cut by a marked minerality on the palate. Expansive with a nutty, walnut quality to the finish (not premoxed). Extremely long finish of rich fruit, cocnut, walnut and white rock notes. Drank over two days. B+/A-

Wow has this changed faces. I initially commented on how this is a nice aperitif wine. Not any more, this is just firing on all cylinders. Serious notes of wash rind cheese and smoke. The nutty flavor on the palate is embraced by a leathery texture that has really only been noticeable in this bottle. If you have any of this left give a bottle a whirl it is in an amazing spot. A- for weirdness!

This wine has plateaued but is in a nice place. Not much acidity left and if my understanding of the vineyard is correct that 2002 would put the vines at a young age of 15. This had some complexity and secondary notes that one would expect of aged roussanne such as toffee, caramel and tobacco. Nice but nothing too special.
