Darker ruby. Potent nose of mulberry, anise, Bing cherry, cinnamon, and some jazzy high-pitched floral notes. Sharp red raspberry and mulberry fruit on the structured palate with ample acidity and serious tannins, complicated by iron, anise and sweet strawberry notes on the long, grippy finish. Wonderful with the first Copper River salmon we've sampled this season.

Dark ruby color. Nose of blackberry, raspberry, anise, violets, earth. Lots of dark plum, black raspberry, and Bing cherry on the drenching palate with notes of moca, cola, and even a bit of tar thrown in. Moderate acidity and structured tannins leading to a very concentrated, satisfyingly grippy finish. Big, robust pinot, very much reflecting its California roots.

Pale gold color. Nose of honeysuckle, grapefruit, apple core, rocky elements. Poised, complex tension on the palate between intense flavors of citrus, granny apple, white pear, and flinty mineral notes versus an ethereal lightness of texture dancing around on the tongue. Abundant freshening acidity and aristocratic steely backbone. Long, balanced, exquisite finish of stone, acidic cut, fresh white fruit, and sweet grip at the end. The last two seconds of each sip brought everything together. Delicious.

Dark ruby color. Very dense nose of black raspberry, mulberry, violets, earth, stone. Youthfully imploded on the palate but still releasing layers of raspberry, currant, black cherry, anise, earth with lengthy decant. Highly acidic and very tannic, yet somehow a pleasurable drink now. Very long finish of flint, red raspberry, and iron filings. Lots of grip and structure. Will be excellent in 5 to 10 years when mature.

Popped and poured. Cork came out intact. Medium to dark ruby. Nose of anise, blackberry, violets, soy, and earth. Lovely on the palate with more lush presentation of fruit compared to last time: black raspberry, mulberry, licorice, plum, earth, and a bit of leather. Still driven by freshening acidity balanced by filed off tannins. Long finish of grippy red fruit, stone, and iron. Evolving nicely and likely to do so for years.

My first introduction to this domaine several years ago and still a favorite. Popped and poured. Darker ruby hue. Nose of damp cellar, forest floor, anise, raspberry, violets, stone. Cool blue fruits on the smooth but concentrated palate with anise, blackberry, and ferrous notes thrown in. Glycerin-like quality to the palate contrasting with NSG rocks and iron. Driving acidity and serious tannins leading to a long finish of dark berry, iron flecks, and sweet grip. Keeps getting better and likely to do so for years.

Popped and poured. Medium ruby color. Nose of red plum, mulberry, violets, stone, a bit of matchstick. Utterly seamless and silky on the palate, with effortless unfurling of red raspberry and Bing cherry fruit laced with iron flecks and loamy notes. Noble, fine-grained tannic structure and fresh acidity leading to a long, luxurious finish of silky red fruit, sweet grip, and ferric stone. This bottle was drained very quickly.

Popped and poured. Darker ruby hue. Nose of damp cellar, forest floor, black raspberry, anise, violets, cinnamon. Big, boisterous flavors of black cherry, raspberry, dark plum, and soy laced with rock and iron as befits NSG, but darn if there wasn't a satin lushness to the palate also. Vibrant acidity and structured tannins balancing the display of almost primary fruit. Long, sappy finish of red and dark fruit, rock, and grip. Super experience with this exuberant young wine.

Brought to Le Pigeon and decanted for 30 minutes. Medium ruby. Striking nose of raspberry, anise, violets, earth, and a bit of beef blood. Very open on the palate, displaying layers of red raspberry, mulberry, and black cherry complicated by iron flecks, leathery notes, and hints of game. Delicate acidity and filed-off tannins leading to a long, beautifully-rendered finish of autumnal red fruit and iron. Fantastic paired with beef cheek bourguignon layered over parmesan risotto. Half bottle.

Purchased off the wine list at Le Pigeon. Pale white gold. Nose of mountain air, schist, alpine flowers, faint citrus notes. Bone dry and incisive on the tongue with layers of white pear, lime, and apple core laced with resin and stone. Mineral spine and driving acidity leading to a longer finish of flinty white fruits and satisfying grip at the end. Wonderfully refreshing and a hit with the rock shrimp and pork appetizer. From a 375.

Decanted for 45 minutes to pair with roast chicken. Medium ruby color. Pungent, dense scents of pine forest, anise, violets, and earth on the nose. Layers of beguiling red fruits on the tongue with strawberry, raspberry, and sweet plum notes laced with bits of iron and stern stony elements. Fresh, uplifting acidity and serious tannins leading to a moderately long but delightful finish of dancing red fruit and iron. Beginning its long evolution towards something quite special but years to go.

Pale honey gold. Nose of apricot, lychee nut, citrus, white stone, alpine flowers. Big dollop of white peach, apricot, granny apple, and mango on the palate bolstered by mineral spine and spritely acidity. Just off dry. Lovely combination of steely structure and opulence. Long finish of shimmering tropical white fruit. Perfect with shrimp over pasta.

Decanted and sampled over three and a half hours. Medium garnet with some ruby highlights. Imploded nose for a hour then scents of violets, stone, moca, tar, black fruits. First sips showed surprising amounts of oak and astringency on the palate but after 90 minutes this melted away revealing pure, fresh layers of concentrated plum and strawberry fruit buoyed by energetic acidity almost hovering on the tongue. Lots of tar, earth, and leather notes also. Stern, tannic structure balanced by all that fruit. Long, dense finish of blackberry, strawberry, tar, and earth. Very impressive and young. These are aristocratic wines.

Longer finish of red, stony fruit and grip. Continues to impress as it evolves over the short term.

First experience with Knoll. Chilled, popped and poured. Pale honey gold. Nose of grapefruit, schist, lily, white pepper. Fresh and acidic on the tongue with layers of opulent mango, granny apple, citrus, and white peach fruit overlying steely mineral backbone and a massaging resin-like texture. Finish notable for white fruit, brash acidity, pepper, and petrol. A rich, powerful wine which should age very nicely.

Popped and poured, then followed for several hours. Medium ruby color. Dense nose of anise, pine forest, holly berry, violets, stone. Primary pulpy red raspberry and mulberry fruit on the palate at first, almost immediately joined by iron and limestone underpinnings. At hour 2 biting tannins came to the fore but at hour 3 there were waves of savory red and black fruit, anise, briar, licorice and soy submerging and balancing the tannins. Plenty of acidity. Long, muscular finish of iron and brooding dark fruit. Grip in spades. This wine is fascinating now but wait at least 5 years if you can.

Pale white gold color. Nose of stone, white peach, alpine flowers, and a heady mix of granny apple and citrus. Bone dry spine of mineral and stone with integrated layers of melon, resin, grapefruit, and a hint of apricot complicated by petrol notes. Alive with almost peppery acidity and salinity. Long finish of white fruit cut with grip and schist. If anything, this wine appears young and forceful, and seems to need additional years to integrate.

Moderate to long finish of sweet red plum fruit and earthy chocolate. Early but quite accessible, this has years to go.

Decanted for 90 minutes and followed for three hours. Dark ruby with bricking at the edges. Nose took a while to come forth but eventually gave off deep scents of menthol, camphor, alpine flowers, strawberry blossoms, tar, and fennel. By hour three the palate was showing layers of sweet strawberry, Bing cherry, resin, asphalt and leather. Very fresh with abundant acidity and cut. Significant tannins and structure. Long finish of sweet red fruit laced with tar and grippy acidic bite. Spectacular with shavings of Parmesan on simple pasta with garlic and olive oil. A wine for meditation.

Popped and poured then followed for 3 hours. Darker ruby color. Clean, forceful nose of fresh raspberries, pine forest, violets, stone, and a bit of red currant. Explosive on the palate with billows of concentrated black and red raspberry fruit complicated by tartness, earth, iron, and a certain degree of aristocratic elegance. Sharp acidity and quite firm tannins submerged by the release of fruit. Evolves on the palate even within each sip. Long finish with waves of red fruit, briar, and iron grip. What a treat! Reaches for grand cru quality.

Very pale white gold color. Nose of oyster shell, white stone, petrol elements, lovely floral notes, and granny apple. On the palate exhibits transparent layers of white pear, apple core, and a bit of lychee overlying a bone dry spine of flint and mineral, laced with white pepper flakes and oily petrol. Impresses not with opulence but rather quiet purity. A particularly nice pairing with corned beef!
