2010 Domaine Albert Seltz Riesling Zotzenberg

Alsace Grand Cru more

2/4/2016 - FarmerKeith LA/VA Likes this wine: NR

Wow ,super oxidative, near the point of flaw. Very petrol for so young an Alsace. It's gold colored and concentrated. Massive alchohol, but somehow doesn't seem flabby. I like it .

Opened way too cold, below 40f. At first I was disappointed, but once it got to 50 the door opened to another world. This wine is amazingly complex, long finish, extraordinary.

2007 Château Coucheroy Blanc

I really loved the 2010 I had of this last year. I dropped in the Richmond Total Wine , and found one bottle of 2007 and wanted to try. I''m sure it's been at room temp for 6 years. At first, I was gonna return it. It's copper colored , and very oxidized. But after about 15 minutes it's got a tiny bit of charm. It's well past peak, but there's a caramel element coming through from the age. Fruit is tired, still an interesting exercise. So my takeaway is that 7 years back is as far as you want to go with Bordeaux Blanc of this style and quality.

2012 Celler el Masroig Montsant Les Sorts Blanc

Grenache Blanc, Grenache more

1/14/2016 - FarmerKeith LA/VA Likes this wine: 90 points

I like this . It's very similar to a Marsanne . Like a budget white Northern Rhone. It really needs to be above at 50 degrees of chill. Below that ,it has a little sharp note , that melts with temperature. The difference is immense! This is cool ,because it's 100 per cent white granache , which is always blended with something in Southern Rhone.
White Montsant....who new?

1/7/2016 - FarmerKeith LA/VA Likes this wine: 92 points

Textbook Northern Rhone beauty. Red and dark fruit , meat /blood , leafy and mineral earth, with nice acidity, and lovely balance . It tastes younger than it is, and will clearly be stellar in maturity. The "Gambert" cuvee is this with a little more smoky oak influence, so really special, as well.

The oxidation is at exactly the right point . It's honeyed richness layered over apple/pear fruit, and a healthy dose of myer lemon.any further on oxidation and it's a mess.

So good. It's a really super blend of tart cherry/ raspberry, mushroom, wet leaf, forest floor and a hint of spice and anise. Delicious and complex, fairly long finish. If pressed , the fruit to earth ratio is even. it's wonderful and an unbelievable Burgundy value.

11/12/2015 - FarmerKeith LA/VA Likes this wine: 93 points

This is a really great wine. It is massive, high alcohol , lush fruit, like people love to knock in new world wines.( and really isn't that Chateauneuf du Pape?) But it's very complex, deep, layers of expression, and now I get a pronounced Cardomum note, that I hadn't in years past. Just lovely. I've always liked this producer, and I prefer this Piggott to their tete cuvee, the Astralis.

This tastes similar to Northern syrah. My local store owner said it would remind of St. Joseph, I think as the air hits it, it's right there between SJ, and Crozes. That black fruit , with some acidity, and lean,

2010 Château Lalande-Borie

St. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend more

11/5/2015 - FarmerKeith LA/VA Likes this wine: 90 points

So this seems to affirm a meeting point of "modern style" Bordeaux, and "Bordeaux Blends", from the Western U.S. This is remarkably accessible , for either the aforementioned , but I think it's a testament to the old world skill. Oak, tannin, fruit, and alcohol , are seemless. The earth is in the backseat, extremely well made, lots of potential, massively pleasurable.

1st time I've ever seen white Bandol, so of course ,had to try it. It's clairette and picpoul. So it's bright with acid, highly mineral ahead of fruit. Different , and interesting , not complex or fine.

Youthful , textbook Rotie deliciousness. Syrah with acid and mineral, and that tiny touch of viognier aromatic lift. Alchohol is 12.5,that says a lot . It's pretty approachable, probably a good bridge for newcomers to CR.

2005 Shaps & Roucher-Sarrazin Volnay 1er Cru Santenots

Pinot Noir more

9/27/2015 - FarmerKeith LA/VA Likes this wine: 91 points

Showing the rim variation, marking age. Loads of wet leaves and dirt on nose, mossy ,a little more pronounced and complex than usual "forest floor". It's also slightly cloudy and lots of particulates. clearly sound , though. Palate is much confirmed, earth way over fruit , and tannins not unpleasant, but still a little grippy. This can go for many more years. This totally seems like Nuits wine,Morey, especially. This confirms the stuff I've read from experienced Burg guys , about Volnay.I love it.

A delicious ,easy drinking CDL, at a great price. That acid/sugar balance makes it perfect with cheese board , or it's just lovely on its own. This is also a great illuminator, for the "I don't care for sweet wine " crowds.

2013 Domaine de la Colline Chinon

Cabernet Franc more

9/21/2015 - FarmerKeith LA/VA Likes this wine: 90 points

Super good wine here . I have limited experience in Loire reds, but for me,Chinon and Bourgeil always have a pronounced chalk note. This wine has that but subdued with generous fruit in front of everything. I like drinking it on its own. The only downside is that while obviously well made , it is fairly simple and I wish it had more complexity. I have to say I love it, and it's a great wine to introduce the uninitiated to Loire reds!
Most innarestin.

Super bargain. Nice acid , dry fruit is in front , where I expect a little sweetness with sangiovese,. I could mistake for a Barolo in a blind, as this is pop and pour. The tannin is assertive, but pleasant. Nice , and twice so for the price.

2009 Château Grand Tayac

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend more

8/20/2015 - FarmerKeith LA/VA Likes this wine: 90 points

Super enjoyable wine, like a bridge between new world and Bordeaux. It has the earth, oak, cedar, light graphite, but very lush pronounced black fruit, and soft tannin. The most amazing thing, they actually put on the back label , save for 3-4 years! Unbelievable, a Margaux producer , actually telling you, we produced this for new world taste, don't age for long. It's delightful now , at 6 years though.

Very nice, earth , blackberry to the max ( it is Syrah), and tar, black olive, dark plum , light eucalyptus. Leather is there, and I get the meat notes associated with North Rhone, but can't help thinking those are suggestive, Still, Really good wine. I paid more than $50, and am pleased, it's just delicious. Love those Northern Rhones.
