Dark, dense wine with aromas of plum and green pepper that allow dusty soil and black licorice to poke through. It's quite big and dense on the palate too, very modern in style and packs some booze. Still, great acidity and depth make this supremely satisfying on many levels.

Opened and served. Pour a dark purple. The nose is beautiful, with plenty of ripe blackberry, cassis, and black cherry. Framing that is a nice bit of oak, warm baking spice, and hints of green pepper throughout. On the palate this is at once rich and hedonistic, yet shows a great touch because it never overwhelms. Savory at some points, that helps to bring in the ripeness and balance out the wine. Excellent depth and concentration. The finish is long and satisfying.

Opened approximately 2 hours prior to serving. Quite closed initially, with some reduction present. The nose is all red fruit and whole-cluster spices at first, before giving way to forest floor and some oak. Good balance and typicity. Nice acidity keeps the raspberry/strawberry in check, and a little anise mixed with black pepper and baking spices add dimension. Not the most complex wine but very satisfying and a real pleasure to drink. A touch rough on the tannins but that could be due to the wines youth.

Chilled in the fridge for approximately 1 hour prior to serving. Pours a pale salmon-gold with very find bubbles. Intoxicating aromas of cranberry, blood orange, iodine, and subtle pie crust. Onthe palate the mousse is quite fine and vibrant. Similar flavors as the bouquet, with impeccable balance and a rich, delineated mouthfeel. The depth and persistence is incredible. I love the subtle savory element of the finish too, leaving me wanting another sip right away.

Opened approximately 1.5 hours prior to serving. The nose was very pretty, with smoked meat and plums, blackberry, and garrigue. Also unfortunately some nail polish remover showed up and did a lot to mute what I think could have been an even more expressive nose. On the palate it was beautiful though, with tart black and red fruit, leather, spicy white pepper and dusty herbs. There's awesome acidity here as well as ample tanning, but this didn't feel too young at all. A lengthy, tapering finish was a great touch on a delicious bottle.

Fantastic right out of the bottle, with slight reduction showing at first. Intensely pure red fruit - cranberry tinged with raspberry - mixed with stemmy spices and a mild oak component. The fruit dominated at first but as the wine opened up it gained complexity in the form of spices and white pepper. Very smooth and rich across the palate, with notable depth and balanced concentration. Again the purity comes through and there's brilliant acidity to help frame all the flavors. The finish is gentle and medium-length, with a clean taper. Overall this is gorgeous Burgundy that is drinking wonderfully well right now but could easily go 10 years or more.

Opened 02/27 and drank 1/4, reclosed and drank the rest 02/28. Pours an amber/gold, cloudy. Really fascinating wine, one that I enjoyed. Tons of spicy phenolics work with lemons and white flowers to create some complex aromas and flavors. Excellent acidity provides structure. On the second day it was more savory than the first, with beef broth and white flowers leading the way. Marvelous stuff.

Opened 02/27, drank 1/3, recorked. Reopened 02/28 and finished off. Stellar wine, just glorious. Needed air to really strut its stuff. Initially it was more fruit and less savory, funky Syrah. With air the umami elements came out, with mineral and dark floral tones. The fruit was marvelous, a balanced attack of black raspberry and blueberry. Subtle oak, a hint here or there, but never overbearing. It'll be hard not to drink the rest of my bottles.

1983 Château Lynch-Bages

2/28/2015 - ucbeau Likes this wine: NR

Opened about 1 hour prior to serving. The nose evolved, with brett dominating at first before giving way to more green, herbal aromas. As the wine opened up it showed more cab franc influence, with bell pepper and jalapeno notes. This was side by side with barnyard, dried leather, black cherry, and cassis. The tannins are fully resolved now, and they do a lovely job working with the remaining fruit. This is in a great place, showing complexity and balance along with the classic mature Bordeaux element, sheer class. Drink up.

Decanted for about an hour or two before serving. Poured a brickish red, cloudy. Bottle had been stood upright for a week. On the nose there's notes of brett and red fruit plus a little bit of dusty soil. The tannins are still quite firm and never opened up, which was odd given the age of the wine. It remained tight on the palate the whole night, but I got the sense that whatever was lurking behind the tannins wasn't that interesting anyways.

Chilled approximately 1 hour prior to serving. Pours a pale, slightly cloudy gold. On the nose there's asian pear, spices, barrel, chicken broth, and more. One of the most expressive, interesting bouquets I've ever smelled in a white wine. Once you start sipping, your palate explodes in a dazzling wash of citrus rind, baking spice, grass, umami, pear, and more. This was incredibly fresh and vibrant, with acidity for days that worked to balance the richness. A gentle, medium length finish cleaned everything up. One of the best white wines I've had in a long time.

Chilled for about an hour in the fridge, then opened and explored over a few hours. Beautiful wine. Lovely round, rich notes that you'd expect from marsanne and roussanne, but there's great acidity and balance here too. Stone fruit, beeswax, honey, white flowers, and orange pith all work well together. Will probably keep for several more years too.

Opened maybe 30-40 minutes prior to serving. Initial whiffs of barnyard and cherry fruit leather dominate the nose. Leather and some horse sweat on the palate, with surprisingly firm tannins. With air, there is a fruit and oak component that emerges, but it was rather brief. Tertiary flavors of soy and forest floor show that this is probably passing its peak. A fun wine.

Unscrewed about 1 hour prior to serving. On the nose is smoked meat, garrigue, fleshy red cherry, herb de provence, and hints of tart cranberry. Great judicious use of oak too, it's nicely integrated. The wine carries everything along for the ride and is in a wonderful place right now with regards to balance and the structure. Good acidity and some nicely polished tannins only enhance the experience. Truly excellent stuff.

Opened 30-40 minutes prior to serving, tasted continuously over 4 hours. Gorgeous nose showing white pepper, rose petal, tart raspberry and black cherry. I picked up a little hint of oak but it was exactly the kind I like, integrated and supporting the structure. The acidity is still young and a touch rough but with several more years it'll integrate nicely. Good firm tannins. I'll be holding my other bottles for a while.

2/14/2015 - ucbeau Likes this wine: NR

Chilled approximately 2 hours prior to serving, then tasted over the course of about 4 hours. Right now it's still in its youthful phase, I found the oak to be dominant and the fruit to be tucked away. That said, this is literally the exact kind of oak that I believe great chardonnay must have. Integrated, lending both structure and flavor, and working to harmonize the acidity. Given a few more years I think we'll see the apple and pear notes start to come out, as well as hints of pineapple and quince. Right now it's still pretty fantastic though.

Chilled for about an hour prior to serving. Fantastic QPR riesling. Great depth and complexity but retaining a freshness that I found immensely appealing. The acidity is front and center until it opens up, and there's this wonderful slate tension on the palate. Citrus and stone fruit lead the way with hints of green apple and green pear too. Still young, I will be anxious to drink this post 2020.

Hard to believe this was only $20. Big, dark, dense nose and palate. Lots of concentrated tart fruit and oak. Baking spice and a whiff of cherry pie come through as well. I wouldn't say this is too young to drink but with the grippy tannins it still could use a few years. A super fun, easy drinking wine that clearly states its origins.

Opened about 1 hour prior to serving. Pours a dark, vivid red. On the nose there's notes of briar, red cherry, balsamic, oak, and kitchen spices. Very big and mouthfilling on the palate, with still-young tannins. A bit volatile as it opened, this was still very fun and interesting, and quite unlike any other Barbera I've tasted.
