1996 Château d'Yquem

Sauternes Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend more

5/21/2015 - Pknut wrote: NR

Sure, it was delicious, with bright, golden fruit, nectarine marmalade, golden raisins, and a long, sweet finish. And I'm very grateful for the opportunity to taste it. But d'Yquem (like DRC, to me) rarely has evoked in me the response that its price and pedigree would otherwise suggest. Amali with Bruce, Michel and Stephen V.

Stephen brought this to dinner right from the Aucker auction. Interesting nose, with an array of complexities: pepper, old books, campfire, mint and, I think, dried celeriac. Others at the table liked the palate, but for me the appeal here was the nose. Amali with Bruce, Michel and Stephen V.

Eh. Lacks the overt oak notes that have characterized recent vintage Jasmin, but one can still sense a slathering of oak in the creamy soft texture. There is a pool of dark fruit but it feels flabby and unstructured. Not impressed. A glass the next night was awful. Amali with Bruce, Michel and Stephen V.

Another excellent bottle, this one showing very young, with vibrant dark fruits, raspberry reduction mixed with dried herbs and that VT pepper, but only trace nori/seaweed notes. Lovely mix of fresh, youthful red/black raspberries and garrigue. This is compact on the palate, direct and focused, no fat, with a rather silky mouthfeel. Many CdPs fade early, but here is one that at age twenty is still bright and delicious. Amali, with Bruce, Michel and Stephen V.

This just rocked. Plenty of dark fruits on a palate this is nicely resolved structurally and texturally. Terrific thrust and power to the dark fruited palate, but the mouthfeel is rather silky and fine. Muscle wrapped in lace. Amali with Bruce, Michel and Stephen V.

Another bottle of this NV from a stash I bought years ago and aged in the cellar. Time has been kind to this NV. Opens with notes of apricot on the nose that soon settle into a more clear-fruited palate with slight buttered brioche notes. The bead is very fine, the palate is tapered yet very expressive with white and clear fruits, solid underlying acidity. Very nice clarity and focus. Very good. Amali with Bruce, Michel and Stephen V.

Opens quickly to an expressive nose and palate of clear and white fruits, unsweetened pineapple then veering towards white grapefruit and light apple, with good acidity and nice energy. The palate settles down with air. Mellower on the second night, still good clarity though. Another Louis Michel Chablis that has impressive attributes: no oak, good clarity, good energy . . . but still, drink now to mid term.

Completely correct, dark fruits, silky mouthfeel, tannins strong but supple, everything is in balance, oak is nicely contained. This just needs to sleep for a long while to flesh out, soften and gain complexity.

Terrific bottle. Lots of vigor left here, bright red fruits with notes of iodine and peat - very VT - James says Shiso leaf. The tannins are nicely integrated and the wine has a smooth texture in the mouth with an array of flavors atop. Still shows good freshness. Bought on release and cellared for many years, to terrific results. At James and Nancy's.

1.5 years since my last bottle, and boy, is this great right now. This NV has probably been in my cellar for about 5-6 years and is now showing rainwater pure, with smoothly contoured sides, clear fruits on the palate - very Blanc de Blanc - and a nice finish. Love the clarity and purity here. At James and Nancy's.

1999 Giuseppe Cortese Barbaresco Rabajà

Nebbiolo more

5/16/2015 - Pknut wrote: NR

Really impressive showing. The color is crimson to brown, suggesting some age, but after an hour or two of air, this shows ripe, fresh raspberry fruit, really pure and fresh and at the front of the palate, really captivating. The tannins have softened but still give nice definition to the palate. On the second night, no degradation, now showing less pure raspberry and more grainy tannin, but what is really noticeable on the second night is the really good balance. Very nice wine, showing well now with air, but plenty here to last for years. Lovely Rabaja.

2005 S.C. Guillard Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Corbeaux

Pinot Noir more

5/15/2015 - Pknut wrote: NR

Begins with a really inviting nose of Gevrey spices, but that was really the high point of this wine. Dark fruited and it seems like this is just on the brink of taking on foresty notes of the sous bois sort, but the palate here is dry, the fruit could be sweeter, and the midpalate is sort of lean too. It's clearly passed the primary stage, and maybe this just needs to turn a corner, flesh out some and take on some more savory notes. That would be optimistic.

This is rather "tan" on the palate, with notes of wheat, and is especially rounded on the sides, much more so than the last bottle. Has a roundness to the sides and a fullness in the mouth that is a nice result from a few years of aging in the cellar. Oatmeal notes on the palate.

Very giving in its array of flavors: unsweet pineapple, grapefruit, even a hint of tangerine after this had been open for a while. The palate is wide open with plenty of clear fruits and lots of energy. A bit looser than my first bottle last summer, but still plenty of energy and vigor. Drink now to mid term.

Not even ten months since my last bottle, and the forward fruit that this wine featured in the past has receded considerably. This is now awkward, with the fruit in retreat and the tannins showing very dry. The 15.5% alcohol is also noticeable. I suspect that this wine's best days are in the past, rather than it being in some awkward, funky period from which a mature and complex and better wine will emerge. Back in NYC after Scotland.

Nicos tells me that this is declassified Chateauneuf. This is really nice, smooth, plump, dark fruited, showing no spoofiness nor heat from this infamous vintage. The tannins and structure are completely integrated and this comes across as very smooth, plump in the mouth but contained. There is a hint of sweet chocolate, but the wine is not otherwise oaky. Very enjoyable. In Edinburgh with Nicos, Katerina and Andy.

Bottle no. 101. Still very dark in color and palate profile, but softer on the sides and heading towards palate integration. The nose shows some complexities. The palate is dark fruited and has hints of melted sweet liquorice and some tar. The tannins are integrating into the fruit. This is drinking well now and can be considered ready, but still plenty of life in this wine. In Edinburgh, with Nicos, Katerina and Andy.

Bottle no. 52945. Really quite nice. I get blackberry, Nicos gets cassis, with a very silky mouthfeel. Nicely resolved, good length. After dinner, the nose became even more expressive with classic scents of mature Bordeaux, Nicos says pencil sharpenings overlayed with bramble and cassis fruit. Drinking well now, and probably for a few more years. With Nicos, the Muir House, Kirkwall, Orkney Island, Scotland.

Toscana IGT Sangiovese more

5/1/2015 - Pknut wrote: NR

My past impressions of Felsina Fontalloro were that it is a "slick" wine, and I think I've read that Fontalloro sees more new oak than Rancia. That said, I've aged Fontalloro for many years and the oak usually absorbs well. Here, at age ten (and my first bottle, it seems), this is not slick at all. It's quite the opposite, pebbly tannins breaking down and a gritty texture, rather rough and very likable. Good plummy fruit with Sangio spice. At a nice point now in its evolution. Good energy on the second night too.
