Fresh, vibrant and floral aromatics, fresh raspberries and cherries. Silky but structured with fine, dusty tannins and, of course, bright, refreshing acid. Tart cherries and wild strawberries mix with black tea, bay leaf and pepper. Vibrant and open now but I’m interested to see what develops in the next two to four years.

I love the fresh aromatics of Trousseau, and this one is so perfume: black tea, roses, spiced red berry compote. Crisp and juicy on the palate with red cherries and red apple peel. Clean and soft tannins with fresh acid. Salty and spicy on the finish. So good for the money.

Non-oxidized style, this is a fresh, bright and salty wine with a lovely creaminess as well. Zesty but nervy, tons of mineral complexity, along with notes of honeycomb and white tea. Lovely stuff.

Similar notes to last time. I love this rosewater, white pepper, floral spice element to this wine. So vibrant with lots of tart white and red berries and oceanic stuff going on. On a cold-ass night, this hit the spot.

Blandy's 10 Year Madeira: That classic copper brown color. Aromas of dates, fig paste, spiced pumpkin pie, caramel, honey, and a floral note lifting from the richness. Mouth-filling and unctuous on the palate but there’s a hint of freshness. Flavors of dates and figs blend with orange marmalade, molasses, honeycomb, pecan pie, clove and rich nougat. Rich but complex and ultimately damned enjoyable without being too heavy.

Medium ruby color. Smells of juicy raspberries and cherries, underlined with clay, loam and sweet rose notes. On the palate, this is well-structured with those tell-tale dusty tannic grip, but the refreshing acid keeps the mouthfeel nice and smooth. The fruit is fresh and juicy but deeply flavorful (black cherries, raspberries, hints of blueberry, a rich sense of earth pervades the wine, and air coaxes out notes of violets, sweet herbs, rocks and minerals. Impressive effort. I didn't know much about this producer, and the price range and label led me to think it wasn’t too serious. But this wine makes me want to seek out more, this wine in particular to cellar for a few years, and some other Crus to compare. I've enjoyed a previous vintage of this wine and a Morgon from this producer as well. And at $15, the price is right. Cheers!

15 Vintages of Cos d'Estournel (Ripple - Washington, DC): Dark and juicy black currants on the nose, intertwined with cocoa, menthol, roasted chestnut and charcoal notes. Rich, plummy, saucy, but shows plenty of elegance as well. The fruit is slathered with spiced tea, menthol, fallen leaves, roasted pepper, and some toasted almond and cedar. Bold and still so structured but full of earthy complexity. At this point in the tasting, I wish I could spend all evening with this wine to really appreciate its nuance and evolution.

Light gold color. Aromas of green and yellow apples, some richer apricot and honeyed notes, a hint of toasted almond but also some bright floral components. Fresh but full of chunky fruit, a nice mix of cantaloupe, kiwi and green apple, topped with some floral tea, honey and toasted almond. But there’s also a refreshing sense of chalk and minerals. Not super complicated but plenty tasty. More character than a ton of Chards in this price point from most regions. It’s not easy finding Chardonnay for $15 with some compelling qualities, but this one is solid for my palate.

Blandy's 10 Year Madeira: Light brown/dark orange color. Richer aromas of quince paste, dried apricot, honey, toasted almonds and clove. Rich texture, plenty of sweetness but that’s balanced (at least somewhat) by a bitof acidity. Nutty and honeyed flavor profile with flavors of apricot jam, dried mango, along with toasted almond, white tea, candied pecans, some spicy clove elements. I love the sweet richness, but the wine doesn’t feel overwhelming. A sweet wine that finishes fresh.

Blandy's 10 Year Madeira: Light orange-caramel color. Some bright aromas of orange peel and lemon zinger tea mixed with elements of raw almond, olive oil, honey and caramel candies. Full but juicy on the palate with a bit of tanginess, light sweetness but the wine stays fresh. Orange marmalade, honeyed lemon tea, almond, olive oil, dried flowers – this has a lot of really intriguing flavors. Rich but nicely balanced – what I look for in Verdelho.

Blandy's 10 Year Madeira: Medium gold color. Smells of orange peel, apricot, shaved ginger, almond and a mix of floral and slight herbal notes. Full and rich on the palate, but like a good Sercial the acid cleans it all up and keeps the wine fresh despite the richness. Flavors of baked apple and orange peel, topped with raw almond, ginger, dried white flowers, sea salt. Bold but so refreshing. I love Sercials for the way the bright crunchy aspects are integrated well with the richer flavors.

Dark violet color. This is really smoky and deep on the nose, with blackberries and plums mixed with a host of awesome tobacco, sweet red pepper, black olive, along with some gravel and leather elements. I love the tartness in this wine, which really makes it pop, but the tannins are still quite grippy and firm, and it takes time to smooth out. The blackberry and blueberry fruit is dark but also crunchy, and mixed together with complex flavors of black olive, smoke, earth, black pepper. Stays silky with a nice tartness. But it has the tannic structure to age for a while longer. It threw a ton of sediment, so definitely one for the decanter. Half Petit Verdot and half Cabernet Franc – a uniquely tasty wine, and I like it for the way it seems to exemplify perfectly these two grapes.

I bought this bottle from the winery a few months before it shuttered for good. Sorry to see this producer go, because I enjoyed the wines and have good memories of visiting and tasting with my family. Anyway, this bottles has held up nicely. Light purple color. Smells of juicy blackberries and plums, the fruit smells like it’s fresh and vibrant, not confectionary, and I get a good dose of cracked pepper, smoke and bitter chocolate. A bold, full wine but there’s a refreshing tartness to this wine. The tannins have smoothed out a bit but still structured well. Tart black cherries, some blueberry notes, along with a delicious blend of dark chocolate, smoked meat, cracked pepper. On day two, the wine gets really silky and shows more violet and bacon elements. Threw a big sediment, so a decant is a good idea. Wish I had another bottle. From a 2,100-foot vineyard in El Dorado.

Medium ruby color. Smoky and herbal on the nose with some black and red cherries and plums. Full-bodied and rich at 14.5% alcohol, structured tannins but not too intense, medium-low acidity. Chewy texture with bold fruit (black cherry, plum, currant) but it shows some tartness. Notes of charcoal pit, grilled Mediterranean herbs, earth and pepper add complexity. Some moderately toasty oak, but it's woven in well. Does nice things with air, opening to showing more floral and earthy aspects. Quite nice - perhaps worth a revisit in three or four years.

Deep violet color. Aromas of juicy blackberries, currant jam, some smoky-sweet oak and charcoal. A chewy wine with some grit to the tannins, medium-low acid. Fruit is ripe and gushing (black cherries and blackberries), along with a good amount of dark roast coffee, vanilla and sweet oak. Rich, a bit roasted, and a bit harsh around the edges. Not bad, actually fun, but it's not a re-purchase for me. I'm not convinced it will evolve into a really good wine. Next time I'll stick with Ladera's Howell Mountain Cab.
