Blind California Whites: Bright gold color. Great combination of bright lime, green apple and wildflowers with richer elements of bruised yellow apple, pineapple cake and toasted bread. Juicy but bold texture, medium acid. I get lots of yellow apple, apricot and yellow pear, a bit of lime juice mixed in. Lots of honey butter, toasted almond, hints of vanilla, spiced applesauce, this is quite oaky yet it maintains nuance and cleanliness throughout. Complex and attractive in spite, but also because of, it’s bold approach. Aged 14 months in 94% new French oak.

Richly textured, a creamy wine but some medium acid. A richer style wine with lots of flavor yet stays relatively fresh.

Blind California Whites: Light gold color. Smells rich with, melon and yellow apple glazed with honey and apricot jam, some peanut shell and hazelnut. Creamy body, quite rich, but some medium acid to keep it in tempered. Rich yellow apple, apricot and peaches, but some lime drizzled on top. Honey, candied pecans, peanut shells. Rich and yummy, showing a bit of brightness though.

Blind California Whites: Light gold color. Tropical mix on the nose (papaya, green apple, lime) some green herbs, a kind of cotton candy and clean laundry element. A bold, waxy presence on the palate, some moderate acid. The flavors of baked pear, green and yellow apples and apricots mix with notes of toasted nuts, marshmallow, but also some chalk and mountain stream elements. Rich and attractive yet held together well. Surprised for the price.

Blind California Whites: Dark straw color. Peaches and papayas on the nose, some white flowers and honeyed tea, a sweeter, perfumed aspect. Medium-low acid. Chunky pineapple fruit on the palate (papaya, pineapple and mango), with notes of honey, white tea, nougat… sweet white flowers and honeysuckle. Tasty, attractive, fun, not ultimately deep or complex but very good stuff for the price. Aged six months in 20% new French oak, includes 11% Semillon.

Blind California Whites: Medium yellow color. Floral elements mix with green and yellow pears and apples, honeycomb and raw almond. Medium+ bodied, medium acid, the apple, pear and orange fruit is creamy but maintains a tart edge. Creamy elements of whipped honey and floral tea add some complexity. Richness from the almond and peanut brittle, and the full texture, but stays quite balanced.

Very floral nose, along with peaches, lychee, sweet honeysuckle. A creamy, tropical palate with honey, green pear, pineapple and mango, medium-low acid, quite sweet though. Lacks depth and/or precision. Still fun, but I was expecting a bit more besides flowers. 48% Chardonnay, 43% Pinot Noir, 6% Pinot Gris and 3% Pinot Meunier.

Pale salmon color. Salty, oceanic, bright and clean, with white cherries, green and red apples… notes of oyster brine, white pepper and dandelion. Precise, intense, lots going on here yet stays refreshing and fun. Intense minerality, brisk oyster and garlic notes… yeah, this is nerdy-awesome and exciting.

Pretty light gold color. Nose is lovely: salty, some nice oyster brine and crushed rock elements, dried wax, nutshell, orange peel, a slightly pickled note. Richly textured palate but lively acid. Yellow and green apples, orange peel, some apricot. So bright and alive with bracing acid and an intense yet complex mix of brine, spice and minerals. A high tension wine with tons of stuffing to unpack in the cellar. It’s vibrant and intense, really punchy but complexity and elegance underneath. Spice and seaweed lingering on the finish. Must get more and bury it for five or six years.

Plowing through samples: Pale lemon color. Bright but complex aromatics, like limes, white peach and lychee topped with sea breeze, white flowers and clean laundry. A zesty and brisk wine but such pleasant richness, creaminess and sweetness as well. Peaches, apricot, papaya, drizzled with lime, I like the potpourri, straw, crushed chalk and ginger notes. Complex but stays zesty and downright fun. Delicious now, but perhaps it could do some cool stuff in the cellar. Tasted sighted.

Medium-dark ruby color. Nose of deep black cherries, some raspberry and strawberry, too, deeply floral, with violets, also some vanilla cola and cedar. Medium-firm tannins, medium-plus acid, chewy yet pretty fruit (black and red cherries, some strawberry jam). Silky yet full, showing complex flavors of coffee, tobacco, dusty earth, sweet cola, dark chocolate and cedar shavings. Could use a few years, but quite approachable at this point. For 15 months in 100% new French oak, I’m impressed by its balance.

Medium-deep ruby. Lovely, elegant aromatic approach: roses, lavender, lovely red currants and strawberries, some deep and rocky elements, earth and charcoal. Fresh acid on the palate, bright and elegant with dusty tannins and great balance. Tangy yet fleshy red berry fruit, pulls off the rich yet pretty appeal with ease. Complex loam, pipe tobacco and dried roses along with notes of cedar and cherry wood. Long finish. Beautiful, elegant stuff. Beautiful stuff, aged 15 months in 50% new oak. From the new Eagle Peak AVA (not yet available on CT)

Some Cali Red Samples (My Place - Washington, DC): Dark ruby color. Deep and saucy on the nose: black cherries and dark plums, blackberries, notes of spiced coffee, black pepper, barbecue glaze, sweet violets. Medium-full bodied, dry-firm tannins, medium-low acid. Deep and chewy black fruits, hints of blueberry, a full and forward wine with smoky charcoal notes, black pepper, toasted oak and dark chocolate. Long and rich with lots of complex spice, coffee and roasted herb notes. Could definitely use some time or air, but a really exciting and gutsy wine.

Light ruby color. Super fruity nose: strawberry jam, cherry pie topping, black cherry soda, hints of pepper and coffee underneath. Medium-bodied, soft tannins, medium-low acid. Easy-drinking approach, light and slightly chewy. The red fruit is both sweet and tart at the same time, like raspberry and strawberry jam mixed with red apple peel wild cherries. Some toasted coffee on the finish. Fun, crowd-pleasing stuff.

Deep cherry colored. Dusty and smoky nose with rich red and black plums, some toasted nuts and sweet cola. Bold structure on the palate, full-bodied, medium acid. The black cherry and plum fruit is rich and ripe yet showing some tart edges, tossed with cola and toasted nuts. Forward, rich, a bit intense, although complexity comes in the form of charcoal, roses and tobacco leaf. A bold style, but still a lot to like.

Light gold color. Lots of blossoms on the nose, along with honey, white peach and orange marmalade notes. Moderate acid helps balance it, but this has a significant amount of residual sugar. The white peach, nectarine and guava mix with honey, dandelions and white tea. Semi-sweet but refreshing and clean.

Crisp and clean on the palate with bright lime, white peach and green apple fruit, along with significant floral complexity and a sense of river stones and crushed rocks. Not super complex or long, but very pleasant for the price.
