2013 Alamos Malbec Selección

Mendoza more

7/29/2015 - isaacjamesbaker wrote: 87 points

Light purple color. Deeper aromatics than the regular Alamos bottling, more blackberry, some blueberry, noticeably smoky and earthy with a solid dose of pepper black pepper and soy sauce.
Medium+ bodied with velvety tannins and slightly less than medium acid. The blueberry, blackberry and cassis fruit is juicy but tamed. Quite complex in terms of the smoke, charcoal, vanilla, black tea and black pepper notes. Impressive finish, very good for the price. Aged in French and American oak for 9-12 months.

Light purple color. Jammy black cherries, dark plums and rich, juicy blackberries on the nose, notes of earth, vanilla and sweet violets. Medium-bodied, silky tannins, moderate acid. The fruit is juicy and ripe (blueberry, black cherry, dark plums), but it shows some tartness as well. Earthy, woodsy, pine sap, vanilla cola and coffee. Sweet coffee and dark chocolate on the finish. Impressive structure and quite balanced. I really liked the Alamos line when I first started getting into wine, and it’s still a solid buy. Includes 6% Syrah and 4% Bonarda.

Light purple color. Aromas of juicy black cherries, raspberries, cola, sweet vanilla and hints of earth. Soft tannins on the palate, medium acid, tart but chewy red berry fruit mixed in with elements of cedar, toast, coffee and hints of that Chilean loamy soil and roasted coffee. Fun, a good introduction to Chilean Cabs, but not too deep or complicated. Good for the price.

Light purple color. Tart berries on the nose (black and red cherries and berries), some black pepper, tobacco, soy and toasted oak. Juicy on the palate with light-to-medium tannins, medium acid. The black cherry and plum fruit is topped with spicy pepper, roasted coffee, chicory and chestnut, notes of smoke and toasted oak mixed in. A yummy wine but showing a lot for this price point.

This was showing really well off Red Hen's by the glass list. Juicy red fruit, firm tannins, fresh acid, lots of smoke, green olive, tobacco and wet earth. Lovely stuff, wish I had some to cellar for five years.

Fun stuff, really tangy acid, tight grip on the palate. Yeasty, briny, salty, with candied orange peel and grapefruit pith. Some musk and funk elements. Bracing acid on the finish. Know what you're getting into, but I like it.

Light purple color. Smells like raspberry cheesecake topping, black cherry soda, vanilla and coconut. Light tannins, low acid, a candied, chewy feel to the palate. The black cherry and plum fruit tastes sweet and slightly cooked, mixed in with vanilla, caramel and espresso. Simple, sweet, syrupy, lacks a signature of place.

Medium ruby color. Smells of currant jam, roses, sweet vanilla and coffee. On the palate, light tannins, medium acid, tart cranberries, roasted plums and black currants mix with sweeter cherry jam, toasted oak, mocha and sweet vanilla. A fun, fruit-forward wine with easy drinking appeal for the near-term.

Different bottling than what I tasted last year. Bright ruby color. Aromas of fig cookies, raspberry jam, mocha. Medium-light bodied, low tannin and low acid. Red apple peel and raspberry jam blend with toast, vanilla and caramel flavors. Tastes manufactured, the toasted oak is a bit much, overwhelms the sweet red fruit.

Willamette Valley Pinot Noir: Pale ruby colored. Much more tart and floral than some of the other offerings, I get sour cherries, tart cranberries and red apple peels, laced with roses and some sweet red licorice. Medium-bodied with silky tannins and refreshing acid. The fruit is crisp and crunchy but offers plenty of juicy ripeness (red cherries, strawberry, raspberry jam, red apple peel). Lovely mix of pipe tobacco, dark chocolate shavings, clove and white pepper, lots of earthy notes to unpack. Such a silky and creamy wine but plenty of cut and depth as well. 15% new oak, 13.5% alcohol. What a great value for $25.

Similar notes to February. I really like this wine. Great acid but rich and creamy, too. Love the complexity of the salty, nutty, waxy and floral elements. Nice combo of tropical nectary and racy lime. Long, clean, complex. Lovely.

Willamette Valley Pinot Noir: Light-medium ruby colored. Vibrant and tangy red fruit on the nose (currants, strawberries and raspberries) topped with a significant dose of complex herbal notes (dill pickle, pepper, tobacco), hints of rose hips. Medium-full bodied with some dusty tannins of moderate strength, the acid keeps it slick. Flavors of red cherries, wild strawberries and black cherries…. The earthy/herbal notes (pepper, pickle, wet soil, moss) are delicious and woven in well with the juicy fruit. Notes of cedar, mocha and root beer, too. Complex, lots to show, long finish, could develop significantly more complexity over the next three or four years. 16 months in 40% new French oak.

Willamette Valley Pinot Noir: Medium ruby color. Needs time to open up aromatically, a bit compact but starts to show red cherries, strawberry rhubarb pie, loam, clove and sweet pipe tobacco. Medium+ bodied, smooth tannins, medium acid. Black cherries, dark plums and raspberries, the fruit is velvety and rich but has a tart streak as well. Notes of loam and dusty soil mix with toasted nuts, roasted coffee and black cherry cola. A rich wine but still maintains freshness, although I think I’d cellar this for a few years and let it unwind. Aged in 31% new French oak.

Willamette Valley Pinot Noir: Light cherry-ruby color. Fresh and elegant but a whole lot of red fruit (cherries, wild raspberries and cherries) hints of eucalyptus, roses and lavender. Medium-bodied on the palate, bright and crisp acid, soft tannins, very approachable. Raspberry, strawberry and red plum fruit is tangy yet juicy with hints of cedar, eucalyptus, cola, rose potpourri, light roast coffee. A sweet-savory spice element woven in well. Seems like one to drink in the near term, but very pretty stuff. Aged 12 months in French oak, 40% new.

Willamette Valley Pinot Noir: Deep ruby colored. Nose of juicy black cherries and crushed plums, violets, sweet coffee, vanilla, wet earth. Medium+ bodied, with fleshy, chewy tannins and medium acid. Black cherries, summer plums, blackberries, tossed together with dried violets, vanilla, cedar and some moss and wet earth. Cola, sweet coffee, dark chocolate tones woven in. Chewy, rich, a bit more full-throttle and toasty than some of the others, but lots to like. I’d like to cellar this for three or four years. 11 months in 42% new oak. Spring hail cut the crop in half and seems to have led to a very concentrated wine, so definitely seek out if you like a more exuberant Pinot.

Bright and fresh yet savory and showing some sweet cola and clove notes on the finish. Definitely ready to drink now, but I’d like to taste it again in a year or two to see where the non-fruit complexity goes. Pale straw color. Juicy and vibrant nose, loaded with apricot, kiwi and white peaches, honeysuckle, lilies and hints of chalk. Creamy body but bright acid. Juicy white peaches, apricots and honeydew melons, the fruit is ripe and vibrant but stays tangy. So floral, with all sorts of honeysuckle, dandelion and baby’s breath, some sugar cane. Stays clean and fresh on the finish, with notes of rocks and chalk.

Very pale straw color. Nose: Salty, lots of white flowers, sea shells, some white tea, nettle, mixed w honeycomb. Palate is tangy and alive, full of crisp acid and creamy fruit (white peach, nectarine, lime), drizzled with honey. Bursting with minerals and chalk, this is a precise, bright, refreshing Pinot Blanc, and a solid value. Begging for seafood.

Rhone Tasting: Medium ruby. Tart currants, fig paste, rhubarb, tobacco, cowhide aromas. I opened this the night before, showing firm tannins, moderate acid and a course, dusty feel. Smoothed out by day two and got more expressive. The saucy black cherry fruit is laced with roasted herbs, pepper, rich earth, granite, dark chocolate shavings. Notes of anise and sweet roasted figs on the finish. Very good stuff but I’d hold off for another three or four years before trying again.
